Title: When did Mk5 GTI production end?
Post by: MA1694 on November 11, 2019, 11:12:02 pm
I’m on the lookout for a late model GTI. Were they produced up until 2009? I’m sure I’ve seen a few for sale in the past on 59 or even 10 plates.

Also, did late models come fitted with more standard kit? Thanks.

to my knowledge.. at the very most and it was very rare, the latest MK5 was produced on an 09 plate. the newer ones didn't come with any extras unless optionals was purchased the same for all models.

There were a lot of unregistered cars sitting around in fields waiting on buyers after the credit crunch. Even if you find a late plate registration, it might be older production than you think.

In Europe, the last cars rolled off the line in 2008, which is when the MK6 hit the roads but in America it carried onto until 2009 with the EA888 engine.

As Colesey said, it's possible to get a few slow selling 2008 stragglers registered as a 59 or 09.

Thanks for the info guys. It’s getting pretty hard to find lowish mileage late model examples now but the hunt continues.

What about a low mile early example?

Need to wait another 10 years for all the barn find MK5s to come out of the woodwork!

I think the main reason low mileage ones are so rare is a testament to how enjoyable they are to drive.  It's one of those cars where a quick trip to the corner shop for some milk turns into an hour long joy ride.

I’m after 2008+ mate. What’s the colour and spec of yours?

I did see on Autotrader a week or two back an absolute mint condition 2005 car which had only done 15k on the clock or so. Think it was Tornado Red. Asking price was £13000!

Out of interest, what interests you about a late model one over say a 2008-registered car?

2008+ is what I’m looking for. For some reason my insurance is higher on older models and generally the later ones seem to be in better condition. Plus there’s the upgraded CAN gateway or whatever you call it should I want to change the head unit.

Fair enough! Hope you get sorted.
