Just finished doing a valve clean and glad i did. The amount of carbon build up was scary. Only on 58k but surprised they even worked lol.
cleaned them up and done rfd along with s3 injectors and rs4 valve. Car feels so much better. Revs nice and freely and feels alot more alive. Dont have any harsh starts but well see what its like during winter.
Just waiting for a few last bits so i can go stage 3 and make the most out of the new mods.
anyone that hasnt had the valves cleaned i strongly recommend they do.

DIY job?
Any photos?
Do mk5's suffer from this badly then?
-
Ill try and get some pics up soon.
yer i done it at home on the drive while doing cambelt kit and full service.
Yer its a common problem which is why people either get the pcv delete kit or run a catch can.
Water meth also help reduce the build up

Get a cup of tea and read this thread and those which it links to :happy2:

Cheers, I'll have a good look at that.
I need to cambelt and service also so might attempt this too
-
Do we have a list of companies that can provide this service?
-
I have just completed a clean up and runner flap delete
60k and yeah it had build up but it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be
just got to get the rfd mapped into the car now

@DANBOY66 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=8622) Need mine doing, where you based buddy??
-
A good specialist will be well aware of the need for this.
If they don't know about it I'd venture to say that they're not as good as they think they are so go elsewhere.
-
Interesting - not heard of this and my idle isn't consistent.
Would a carbon cleaning service sort this out (like Terraclean)? I know opinion is divided on this service but I watched the episode on Wheeler Dealers where they carbon cleaned an XK8 with amazing results!
-
Terraclean will not clean the valves, the stuff is baked on and needs proper elbow crease to remove! Over glorified petrol/solvent cleaner being sprayed on to it is not going to shift it
-
Google decoke in your area I've booked mine in

So is Terraclean inferior to other decoking processes that will remove carbon deposits or is this an unusual place to get carbon deposits that can't be cleaned by a 'process'?
-
Its baked on and needs to be scrapped off with elbow grease. Seafoam and terraclean wont cut it and will waist time and money.

I'm actually getting pretty fed up of this car I have to say.
Sold my 145k 325Ci running as sweet as a nut to get a newer lower mileage car for work commuting. I fancied a change and was chasing a few rust spots around on the edges here and there.
So far with this 50k GTI I have learnt in 3 months of ownership that I have needed or will need to:
1/ Check & change cam follower that could damage the engine Thankfully this was fine but I changed it anyway - Potential £800+ damage avoided only because of this club.
2/ I need to replace the cam chain and tensioner (hopefully not adjuster) due to diesel sound when fully warm that didn't manifest itself on my 20 minute test drive at purchase - £500 parts and labour
3/ Clean up coking on valves - £500
4/ Hope my wings don't rust.
5/ Change split DV - £40 every few years possibly
The car has been well maintained and has only done 50k! My last VW, a 1986 Jetta TX was designed so much better in comparison.
I also have a 1993 MR2 Turbo putting out 245bhp as standard on 115k that just needs servicing once a year.
Joke!

I had item 3 on your list carried for significantly less that £500 by JKM. 3 hours labour and some materials put the job at about £250 iirc.

If it works for a V10 then it must be good?
