Title: Bert's GT Sport TSI 140 - Stage 1 Revo :)
Post by: bluebert92 on August 13, 2015, 02:08:52 pm
:pomppomp: Hello all :) I'm new to this forum and I thought this would be the place to show my car :driver:
My old petrol VW Polo I had (First car) finally died after 180k so I decided to buy this car at the start of June 2015, its an '08 TSi GT Sport with 60k on the clock.
Since my brief owner ship I have;

I aim to do alot more depending on funds! such as GTI Steering wheel, JOM Springs,R32 Rear lights, Monza 2s, Paint the plastic black bumper to steel grey, GTI Front end with GT badge, painting brake calipers ect.

Thanks :) the interior was immaculate and the exterior was pretty good, a slight dent on the rear left quarter panel but I've got chips away to come soon! Then I'll start the heavy modding stuff haha

I Have a few items en route to my car such as a MK7 GTI Gear knob and the MK5 GTI Steering wheel with grey stitching, so my wages are being stretched much to the missus' disgust! So after seeing @millar95 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=8518) painting his brake calipers recently It gave me the courage to use a day off work productively (and incredibly cheaply!)
I popped down to Halfords and got myself some Gunk Degreaser, a Hammerite Smooth silver spray can, a 1inch brush and some heat resistant red caliper paint and I went to work...

^During shot, please don't mock my paint on the pad fascia... I did clean it off!!! :ashamed: :ashamed:

^ Finished product, overall I'm pleased with the results and was a nice easy and somewhat therapeutic mod and easy on my wallet too! about £20! ( I Know my allows need some TLC unfortunately the ape I bought it of loved a curb)

I also picked up a used set of GTI Pedals from @Wooosh (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=7405) for a good price and fitted them, (The throttle pedal is interesting to remove!) just need a OEM foot rest one now!

Left it parked in the road at my girlfriends parents house for 1 night. It's a private road with no turning and a dead end. Some oxygen thief decided to scratch my drivers door and smashed the glass in my wing mirror :fighting:

Had a fella from chips away pop round and he charged me £0 for a quick repair on my drivers door , its still visible but no where near unbearable.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fzz197%2Fbluebert92%2FIMG_3457_zpsxbtxb8su.jpg&hash=38e908a9b5d250da8c8ba77c51cc03c1785993db)

And a lovely DHL Driver dropped this off for me, all the way from Germany.

Hopefully fit this tonight now!

Door looks much better mate ! gear stick is really smart too, do you have a link for it ?

Gear knob is very nice. You'll need to cut a bit of the metal stick and be patient fitting the gaiter to your surround.

The door is much better.

Post by: bluebert92 on August 25, 2015, 04:26:00 pm
be patient for the gaitor fitting to the surround is one way of putting it....
My stapler won't staple through the plastic which is rather frustrating tbh
and if you want a mk7 gear knob don't go on any website like bold sport but go on German ebay (www.ebay.de) and search for a Mk7 golf schaltknauf I paid £57 all in:happy2:

Played around with the leather a tad from these finished photos however its in, working and is secure! :star:
not as many people described it as "a simple mod" but wasn't too difficult and it isn't all that common.

Had a positive trip to the isle of wight recently to see my missus holiday home for the year :), whilst I was there thought it would be a shame to not visit @v4rley (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=6697) with his big box of led lamps...

He also very quickly changed my theme on my RNS510 to the darker of the 3 available (I found it was too bright at night other wise)

Very nice car and a good base for mods :).
IMO it's one of the best color you can find on a mk5 and the interior is looking really fresh. Even if there are no pictures of the LED lamps I know they look awesome on your color. Some ED30 front and rear valances will complete the look.
Did you install the GTI steering wheel? I am curious to see how it looks with grey stitching?

And regarding the MK7 gear knob, why did you have to cut the top off (maybe @Shoduchi (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=10590) could help with an answer)?

@rex (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2615) the mk7 gaiter is too short for the mk5/6 gear stick. It wouldn't fit otherwise.

I've seen someone doing this mod many months ago and he complained about the work required and that he had to cut the stick a bit.

Thanks man! means alot coming from you :). I will get some pictures up eventually of the Led upgrades as it completely transforms the interior and is such an easy simple mod. As for the exterior I only have LED sidelights but have bought 6000k equivalent halogen headlight/main beams, Looking to get LED front fogs too as some stage.

I was looking into the front and rear valances but my first thought was the GTI side skirts. It's been a quick turn around on my car so far so its a tad pricey!

As for the GTI steering wheel, I bought one and was due to be delivered but so far hasn't shown up and the courier in question hasn't updated any of the tracking since last week - currently looking into my insurance to get some money back :|

as @Shoduchi (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=10590) said, The gaiter is too short for the original shaft, its not the easiest job for an inexperienced modder however I can write up a quick guide if need be - I have step by step pictures but I wasn't sure anyone wanted to see that amount of pictures haha! I was just lucky I'm an electrician by trade and had all the tools I needed anyway!

If you have the time and energy to create a DIY topic, I think that would benefit the whole forum!
Cheers and keep the mods coming  :drinking:!

A rough guide of how to fit a MK7 Gear knob into your MK5 Golf!

Step one should be cover your entire front of your car with a dust sheet, blanket or whatever to protect your pride and joy from the madness that is to follow

For starters DO NOT purchase one of these from the more popular places such as Bold sport or TPS (I don't have trade discount so maybe that helps) I went onto German eBay and bought it in euros with shipping and it worked out around £100 cheaper then Boldsport.

so this may help you: http://www.ebay.de/sch/i.html?_odkw=mk7+Gti+Schaltknauf&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR3.TRC2.A0.H0.Xgolf+vii+Gti+Schaltknauf.TRS0&_nkw=golf+vii+Gti+Schaltknauf&_sacat=0

^Don't expect the sellers to speak English however, I used google translate to get me through it!

________________________________________________________________________
#1. Here is the beast unboxed for the first time, I would wrap the end up now (please no jokes) as to avoid the the golf ball shape and nice aluminium getting scratched or damaged!
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fbluebert92%2Fgearknob%2F1_zpsi1fomege.jpg&hash=633334e79a865e8bfd875325d6724c7458bca8a5)

#2. Here is the easiest way I found of popping up the plastic fascia that the gear gaitor sits into
(Picture to come)

#3. Once the plastic fascia is removed then simply pull the gaitor and surround above the actually gear knob like so...
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fbluebert92%2Fgearknob%2F3_zpsz81mgk5w.jpg&hash=3deb46c110145d21837ab1b3b5dcb92a3120feb1)

#4. Next there is a small metal ring(Not sure what its called) which you need to prize off, the method for doing this which I used was a size 6 terminal screwdriver and I put it in the ring and wiggled it left and right until the ring releases the pressure and moves up towards the gear knob itself, (Basically it holds it in place by pushing down to clamp it in) Once the ring has released pressure you need to physically pull the gear knob fixtures off of the shaft in an upward motion - mine took a considerable amount of force to remove it.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fzz197%2Fbluebert92%2F50401040-91BE-41A8-8FC0-D0A2F83EB82D_zpsyl66wmrs.jpg&hash=7e6e036318aba0a46e6a0af492d7181ed40d678f)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fzz197%2Fbluebert92%2FF1D72E49-638F-4624-83AA-F7E873BBE28E_zps9frq65kt.jpg&hash=3c12f53a1c5ef6542c5f7044f43d28d9992d2da4)
^i took this picture on my girlfriends brothers vw lupo as I fitted my old mk5 knob into his lupo so I thought I'd take this picture as the clips are the same on them all!

#5. You should then be left with this, and this means you can now leave your car for the majority of the job :) Cue the kettle.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fbluebert92%2Fgearknob%2F4_zps5zymnyky.jpg&hash=44eead464061237f84daf566cd9eaafdc480d9f1)

#6. Next you need to remove the base from the gaiter which is done by pressing the x8 or so clips in, finger pressure I found was enough for this.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fbluebert92%2Fgearknob%2F5_zps1xijdtc9.jpg&hash=d8c21b52b153a30ec53a22514d99674f26979616)

#7. once removed, keep safe as you will be needing it again later on.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fbluebert92%2Fgearknob%2F6_zpsgiva0cn6.jpg&hash=617a59b2accd65005283601e5fc1c3d97fdffe3a)

#8. Now for the fun bit, you will need a set of tools, I used a Christmas cracker style screwdriver with a tiny flat head insert on it, and a staple remover (alternative a needle nose set of pliers would work)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fbluebert92%2Fgearknob%2F11_zpsbke80iix.jpg&hash=81515b7360ac9023f3a0dabaffd75fc642f4811c)

#9. An inside shot of the staples of the MK5 gaiter base, showing the bent over staples which will need straightening to remove
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fbluebert92%2Fgearknob%2F10_zpsgxo8bgrn.jpg&hash=ab0b1bbcbed9163efab3afd9d5c42c0fea4201f3)

10#. Exterior shot of the staples of the MK5 gaiter base. If I remember rightly there is about 420 million staples in the MK5 base.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fbluebert92%2Fgearknob%2F9_zpszl1shd2s.jpg&hash=fe9a6c54441a85c0c48fced0a4e015f13c649a82)

11#. Just showing the fiddly method of removing the staples, once this is done, prize them slightly away from the exterior also and then use the staple remover and they should come out fairly easy but with a fair amount of force also!
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fbluebert92%2Fgearknob%2F12_zpsygilj8ld.jpg&hash=a4455678def9c6dcf1f9a66a9cb778051dd4cab9)

12#. Once all the staples have been removed and the gaiter is free from the base I marked the side which faces the dashboard on the base as I didn't want to mount the gear stick backwards after all this effort, you may be more confident then myself but I found this worked for me.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fbluebert92%2Fgearknob%2F18_zps9r1gcdr6.jpg&hash=ebf64596e9281aaa30f4fb8a75842a9ff1a2d347)

13#.  Now the MK5 gaiter base is free from its leathery prison, Keep it somewhere safe and in my case let the tippex dry and move onto removing the MK7 gaiter from its base - using exactly the same method shown above - This one is a lot easier as their is less staples and they are larger. Don't stab your self with either the screw driver or the staples though, that would be stupid.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fbluebert92%2Fgearknob%2F15_zpssgwkrk6d.jpg&hash=dc59468cef89d6abbb8574e89e4d6c1b6614e424)

14#. Once all the staples are removed and you are ready to remove the leather from the base make sure you unhook these, are they are different from the MK5 and you wouldn't want to tear it after all that work! There is 4, 1 in each corner.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fbluebert92%2Fgearknob%2F16_zps2vb9mwbk.jpg&hash=ebe1a0877251fee6d7242c5e91610437738c2576)

15#. The re-fitting of the MK7 leather gaiter to the MK5 base is without a doubt the most frustrating part of this mod, and my staple gun was shockingly bad at penetrating the MK5 base's thick plastic - So after many swear words a few staples later and 3 coffee breaks I gave up... I resorted to the quite frankly amazing "Gorilla Glue" It's an extremely effective glue and it worked a miracle for me today.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gorilla-1044201-Glue-60ml/dp/B001W030CW
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fbluebert92%2Fgearknob%2F19_zpsertju60m.jpg&hash=603ac1738bd5a922c45cc1923011e6eac05e77ab)

16#. Make sure you trim your gaiter to size as its slightly oversize in shape as it obviously isn't designed for the MK5 Base, I used the slit method to get it hug the corners well. Once your happy with the fitment, proceed to Fix your leather to the base - Fix being staples or Glue in this case - Gorilla glue was left for 10 minutes and was rock solid so I persisted with this. (Bare in mind I tried the glue on the MK7 base with the MK5 gaiter just to try if it was a good enough fixing and I was very impressed)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fbluebert92%2Fgearknob%2F20_zpscglt8svk.jpg&hash=9d82190759739cbdc3886be5b2b57451e39e32bd)

* I will pause now to say the cutting of the shaft is possibly the easiest bit of this mod, and I wouldn't feel to much anxiety about doing it - Providing you have the correct tools and have covered your car well with protection you really can't get this too wrong. *

17#. I looked online at how much people usually cut off as I was nervous about getting it wrong, however the generally answer was between 1-2 inches, which is vague which led me to believe its not too critical, and it isn't.
You can gauge how much you need to get off and even mark it but turning the newly fitted MK7 gear knob and base inside out and physically fitting it onto the shaft and you can see its a good inch or 2 too high, easy!
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fbluebert92%2Fgearknob%2F21_zpsthqe7zrv.jpg&hash=557855649c0b7bb775c7b0f24589617362b7d1b3)

18#. Note on picture 17 you will see I had already cut it before cutting it at the correct measurement, this was a panic cut by myself and my first cut wasn't anywhere near as much as it needed to be (Better not enough then too much!) where the blade sits in this picture you can roughly gauge how much I needed to take off.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fbluebert92%2Fgearknob%2F21_zpsthqe7zrv.jpg&hash=557855649c0b7bb775c7b0f24589617362b7d1b3)

19#. By this stage you have gone past the point of no return, and will now need to grind/ file the Left hand side of the shaft to make it a flat angle, so the gear stick will not twist or have any play when it is fitted. I used an abrasive disc in a drill at low speed to wear it down then finished it off with a flat iron file.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fbluebert92%2Fgearknob%2F22_zps9yokocbq.jpg&hash=cc15a014a7e1c82f315e7f580b23acaf8bc60227)

20#. Now you can keep grinding or filing as you wish and try the new MK7 knob every couple of minutes to gauge how much you need to take off, the flatter it gets you will notice less play and twisting in the knob.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fbluebert92%2Fgearknob%2F23_zpsgvjoy6va.jpg&hash=078e5210da5caefad25a884a74eefc9732dea7ee)
^I may have grinded some more off after this picture to get it fit perfectly but I can't quite remember!

21#. I personally re-used the old metal ring from the MK5 (See #4.) on the new knob as I found it was a much tighter fit and that suited me more, I understand both will work fine and its probably a preference thing more then anything else.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fzz197%2Fbluebert92%2F3ED3985A-8BAB-42AC-879D-77AAFE8D76CD_zpscwvgkc2t.jpg&hash=0c31227d56fa11bc839d8a49e657125c72f74c02)

22#. The finished product after using the same steps you used to remove the old knob and base, do it in reverse and you will end up with something like...
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fbluebert92%2Fgearknob%2F24_zpscryomu0v.jpg&hash=a20a55c4c8ba531e9e35a6966ccd117e4815c923)
^I RE-fitted slightly after as I wasn't totally happy with the leather fitment, which is now fixed.

Well done on the write up I'm sure there'll be a few followers with that detailed guide
The clips I use are http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/O-CLIP-CLIPS-HOSE-CLAMP-CLAMPS-DOUBLE-EAR-FUEL-HOSES-SILICONE-13-15MM-QTY-10-/280894333812?hash=item41669b6374i

I find this type of clip has many uses, gear knobs being one - check the size that suits your shaft.

@v4rley (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=6697) over the moon with the LEDs at the back and the screen! Reversing at night no longer requires me to use my rear fog as well!

@prp74 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=6320) cheers mate! Focusing on all the little aesthetics before I start the engine side

@doylebros (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=6153) ah that clip is a fair shout, I thought possibly a small jubilee clip may also do a similar job- albeit a little more of a ghetto fix rather then a proper clip!

In other news I have had my winter mats delivered and I fitted them last night :)

I actually quite like the look of them.

I had to swap the GTI and GT badges over :) but other then that took about 5 minutes to do the swap and I just took it for a spirited drive and I love the flat bottom feel!

I'm wondering if anyone can help me with this. I don't have the dual function climatronic controls in my golf, just the standard AC and heated seats which I believe is a standard in the MK5.
Essentially i'm inquiring into fitting the MK6 panel into my golf as it looks 110% better then mine - Is it possible?
Cosmetically the only difference I can see is that the heated seats only have 3 settings, but i'm not sure if the new ones works electronically or with some voodoo magic compared to my original one

If you search the forum you can find that it is possible, but you need to upgrade all your AC unit, so if you really want to do it, you're better off upgrading to a dual zone climatronic.

Your dash and most of the interior of your Golf would need to be taken off to replace the AC unit. Even the wipers engine needs to come off.

Ah :/ was kind of hoping that would of been an inexpensive mod really! I've spent a few quid recently on this car and I was hoping for a cheaper option! I have new alloys coming this weekend though so that should satisfy the demon for a little longer :rolleye:

@LFCJosh (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=14046) no worries pal, if you need any advice just comment on here and I can try my best if you attempt the mk7 gear stick, as for the MDI glove box it's basically an iPod lead that connects to your head unit, which functions through the "cd changer" with your first 5 playlists being cd 1-5 and the 6th being whatever album/playlist you are listening to when you plug your iPod in :) -

The cheaper option for the heater dials is some replacement ones off eBay. I did this, they are fully round with aluminium look rings so work better with the stereo.

They aren't hard to swap over either and reversible if you don't like them.

I can't copy the link but search for 'mk5 heater knob' - they look good and much clearer at night I find. I have the RNS510 now.

I found a pic, by the way I have the same car

To start I got some 17" Monzas fitted, I Then picked up and fitted some ED30 Rear lights and an ED30 Rear valance! Finally my rear end doesn't look so cheap!
It may look odd for now as I need to get an exhaust sorted at some stage but I've spent a few pennies recently :\, gave it a quick wash this morning before work and now I'm not so ashamed to show it :)

Not sure if you have gains from a GTI exhaust system. You'd have for sure from a turbo-back exhaust system from Milltek or any of the likes. Most of the gains should be from the DP and sports cat.

Until then you only really need two chromed tips soldered to the back box. It's what I did to mine (GT Sport).

I chose the tips (mine are genuine Skoda Octavia vRS) and went to an exhaust shop. They cut my curved down tips, got two curved tubes to prolong the back box and soldered the tips to fit perfectly. The chrome tips cost me around 50 £, IIRC, and the labour around 35 £. You have plenty of tips to chose from. I think 90 mm tips have the perfect size after having the BCS Powervalve TBE system fitted in my Ed. 30 (my new gold standard). Search for tips like these, for example:

That's extremely helpful, did you go through Skoda to get the tips sorry or did you buy them externally then get them fitted through the exhaust shop?

For £85 that's an immense finish! So essentially i'm looking for a 90mm twin tipped chrome fitting  get looking tonight when i'm back off work!

in the mean time i've fitted my genuine vw centre caps and some nut covers (not sure on the nut covers yet though)

I searched online for the part number and ordered the tips from my usual VW dealer. One of my first buys there in 2009. Many euros spent there since (with increasing discounts too).

I spent 85 £ but in the GT Sport, that picture is from my Ed. 30 with a BCS Powervalve turbo-back exhaust (much more expensive).

These are the pictures from my GT Sport. The tips are smaller, so I now advise bigger tips (90 mm):
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimagizer.imageshack.us%2Fv2%2F800x600q90%2F94%2Fkf5r.jpg&hash=5d22e94a9d05e6f06a7b537c7b2c06ff83c4eb8e)

They were very dirty tips here:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmm475%2FShoduchi%2FOZ_Ultraleggera_08.jpg&hash=e1443d5e831f18a90f907f0a06715bf6738ba4ef)

IMO they are a bit low at the moment, they were better aligned with my previous genuine GTI rear valance.

I searched online for the part number and ordered the tips from my usual VW dealer. One of my first buys there in 2009. Many euros spent there since (with increasing discounts too).

I spent 85 £ but in the GT Sport, that picture is from my Ed. 30 with a BCS Powervalve turbo-back exhaust (much more expensive).

These are the pictures from my GT Sport. The tips are smaller, so I now advise bigger tips (90 mm):
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimagizer.imageshack.us%2Fv2%2F800x600q90%2F94%2Fkf5r.jpg&hash=5d22e94a9d05e6f06a7b537c7b2c06ff83c4eb8e)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimagizer.imageshack.us%2Fv2%2F800x600q90%2F19%2Fnvtp.jpg&hash=e1d1a456e85729b7f5c97741fb7f61cc4a7ec5b9)

They were very dirty tips here:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmm475%2FShoduchi%2FOZ_Ultraleggera_08.jpg&hash=e1443d5e831f18a90f907f0a06715bf6738ba4ef)

IMO they are a bit low at the moment, they were better aligned with my previous genuine GTI rear valance.

Both of your cars are lovely... so in that picture are you running 70mm or 90mm?

The GT Sport tips are OEM, they should have around 70 mm, yes. The Ed. 30 has BCS tips that are 90 mm, and I like them better. :happy2:

Maxitrol made a good suggestion, Milltek tips are awesome too. Not sure if you'll like the price, though...

Okay this week then it appears I'm on the hunt for some exhaust tips and an exhaust shop who can fit them for me! My only concern is the size between 70-90mm.

I sprayed the the rear section of my ed30 rear bumper with gloss black plasti dip! And although the "gloss" is more of a satin gloss I can't complain

If you find some 90mm tips let me know...I'm looking for  the same. Much prefer to go for welded tips and decat as opposed to forking out for a full system....

never really like the front fogs anyway, and this will do untill I get the R-line front fogs soon!

Been a slow week all in all with work going mental so I've only really had time to assess the options of the exhaust issue...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fzz197%2Fbluebert92%2FF42E7217-2793-4F94-9C30-B788EA89AA39_zpsbghr95lw.png&hash=a8d20826248ef7db1a217c7e41df1b10f6aaec84)

Essentially between that^ or a miltek cat back for now with GTi exhaust GT80 tips which is about £450... Decisions decisions

If the welds look nice I don't see the point on spending the extra money other than the warranty of the new part.

Ive been looking into the Milltek ones and I'm sold on the idea of a sports exhaust rather than tips now. I'm assuming any garage that does exhausts could weld it up for me? I'm new to proper modding and I have absolutely no idea on how to go about getting an exhaust sorted!

I would naively assume that I could get a GTi cat back fitted to my exhaust currently?

I'm not the best person to answer yours questions. I just know that your engine will thank a better exhaust, just like mine did (full system - Ed. 30 and downpipe with decat - GT Sport TDI).

:) Been a slow few weeks in terms of the car but hopefully will pick up again now im back at home!

Fitted a GT foot rest so it didn't look so bare in there now :)...

Came home to find one of my LED sidelights as packed up and one of my LED number plate lights  :fighting: - But I do have some paint and some time this week to make something of my engine cover hopefully!

So, After much deliberation on what to do with my engine cover and how to go about it, I decided on some high temperature engine paint in a graphite grey finish, and a high temperature engine paint clear coat.

A picture shows the colour before messing around, a weird beige that in no way fits with any part of the car?
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fzz197%2Fbluebert92%2F5D3C8E8A-D56A-4BBA-80AF-87496DE0AE33_zpsuryc3dac.jpg&hash=813f6325a1f6f9cfbad1f62923541001c3783616)
After a few coats of graphite :)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fzz197%2Fbluebert92%2F4B205D8A-E07E-4487-B5D2-2D5EB7C152FD_zpsxhuohnzo.jpg&hash=dfb75a4b108abd29d6d54b5b6c7c0e2a5e3a9d83)

After its been fitted with about 5-6 coats of clear
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fbluebert92%2Fgearknob%2F522BEE0D-7C71-4A58-B6AE-12797F769F59_zpsjte4jtqd.jpg&hash=8be3b5adc57dc21878781d687b3a2385727c67e6)

Finished picture isn't great, however it matches my car colour very well actually in normal light, which was my hope!

@jhook661 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11500) not really helping matters here mate! although I'm seriously looking into getting a 200bhp map on this, the engine can take it nicely and I don't appear to have the DPF issues that the 170 had... Got myself a disklok after a few people I know in the area have had their cars taken! and to top it off recently I went to lakeside shopping center with 4 mates, I took a lift in my mates car (Focus RS), and there was 3 fiesta STs, all with keyless entry. Police said of the 5 RS' that happened to be there that day only there was only one without a disklok, or some form of lock and that one was stolen! Could just be a coincidence but my mate did a group buy on these and I couldn't say no for the price!

Only the diesel PD170 has DPF (diesel particles filter), yours is petrol. You can tune it to 200 BHP, I think you just need to get a better downpipe with a sports cat.

If laquer is peeling then I'm sorry to say painting it is the only way to fix it properly. You can touch up the laquer to some extent but I'll never be right until done properly.

Hopefully will get my ed30 front splitter (ebay) all painted up at some point this week or next, whenever I get time!, Got some adhesion primer, primer, united grey spray and lacquer, along with a load of fine sand paper to see me through

My hunt for an exhaust has been some what dampened by the fact I need to address the lacquer peeling now, I'm awaiting some quotes now and hopefully they will be kind to my wallet before Christmas... I'll update tomorrow with a picture of the dirty lacquer peeling :((...

Put a decent coat of plastic adhesion spray on my new front bumper and let to rest for a week and now I have just cleaned and preped the bumper and applied 2 coats of grey plastic primer. I'll leave this to dry for 24 hours in my neighbours garage before sanding down and seeing where I'm at

on the 1.4tsi you can decat it and get good figures but just removing the cat material in the standard cat. they dont need a large down pipe as 2.5'' is adequate to flow up to 240hp

am I wrong in assuming that a decat won't pass an MOT? or is there a way I can get like a sports cat?

in other news I have finished painting my "ED30" front splitter, although It was a cheapy ebay special, I'm happy with the final look, although the clips were genuinely awful and were poor for fitting, so I had to fashion proper clips instead which took the best part of 2 hours... all in all lesson learned to never buy any kind of knock of material again, comparatively the rear valance I bought which was a genuine VW part was the easiest fit in the world.

Cheers buddy :). I think its safer to say they don't fit the MK5 platform without some irreversible mods, like cutting the gear knob shaft shorter by about 3", IMO well worth it though!

so i've owned my car for 6 months now, and I did a few comparison shots so far and I think i've made an improvement for sure!

Great work so far! :congrats:

Much nicer than before. I'd really recommend xenons headlights, or Hella xenon-look headlights. They really improve the front of the car.

Ah I was unaware that Hella make the xenon look headlights, I'm not really keen on xenons but the xenon look ones could be up my street, I have the black insert ones at the moment which aren't so bad.

I had a good result on eBay the other day I found a set of genuine R line fog light grilles and I paid £36 which I'm over the moon with as TPS quoted £140! I don't get to work on my car in the light these days which is a pain but you get the idea! also does anyone know where I can get the hella projector headlights from?

All fitted, only issue one of my high beam lamps isn't working so will have to order another and play with it another time, hopefully when it's dark tonight I'll be impressed with the light out put so I won't need to do the HID kit but it isn't off the cards completely!

I'm finally happy with how the front end looks now although I may need to adjust the positioning of the headlights ever so slightly as my OCD is kicking in a tad

Great looking front end! Good job! :congrats:

If you bought Depo xenon-look headlights avoid exposing them to UV light, they'll burn faster than Hella headlights or Bosch genuine xenons.

I want it to be a BCS Powervalve now after hearing this with no droning and a lovely sound, will be pricier I know! I think I'm going to be happy with 200HP realistically, I love my fuel economy also and I can accept some sacrifices on that but ideally not!

I'm planning on getting my 1.4 TSI Twincharger mapped this year and Ideally would like to book it in ASAP however I'm at a loss as to which company to go for?

I've heard amazing reviews regarding R-Tech and usually that would be my go to tuner. It does however seem that R-Tech don't work on the on the MK5 TSI 140, unless there is a typing error on their information sheets (http://www.r-techpower.co.uk/r-tech-vw-remap.htm) ? I have contacted them regarding this and I am awaiting a reply as preferably R-Tech is the place I would choose but just in case are their other companies that would be recommended?

The ones I have in mind for a backup are;

It seems as if they all offer a similiar power output and torque range but as a first time modder i'm unaware of the reputations each company may have?
The ideal scenario is that R-tech respond that they do infact work on my car and all is well!

-----
Next issue being that i'm struggling to find an Intake system that seems to fit my car? although they claim to fit none of them account for this particular pipe? I just want to know is it needed?

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fzz197%2Fbluebert92%2FCD71809C-604F-48D0-B7DB-A0615F482426_zpsxgjmq1kq.jpg&hash=d2c99e6c17b9ce37e13040170349bcc0ce1cdb35)

This pipe connects to my original air box so I would assume its needed?

And in other news i've bought some brand new rear drop links as my offside one is knocking a tad

From the pictures above you seem to have a K&N 57s-9500 Cold Air Intake. If this is the case, this CAI is only bolt on only for the single charge engine.
That pipe si connected to the CAI as seen in the photos below.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1237.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff469%2Fvladpanut%2FP4236511.jpg&hash=390a26614a3d08cc16ac4671dd31482399d2cad6)

I would definetly go with REVO for your engine but then I am a bit subjective because I am very happy with their products and customer care.
The K&N 57s-9500 Cold Air Intake will do very little for performance but the sound is awesome. With the lid off it sounds like a 300+ car :). And the intake noise is quite interesting.

Hope this helps!

R-Tech have point blank not bothered getting back to me so I assume REVO it is :), Nearest is only 20miles from me also :D

That is incredibly helpful mate! - I Have sent the K&N back now as the seller offered a full refund as he falsely advertised it to fit the twin charger model so thats a bonus and instead I have gone for a one of these :D

So I have just bought some MK5 Folding mirrors and controllers from @basman (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=10848) and today I started to fit one side, easy enough job to do once I figured out that I needed to swap the controllers out of the bought unit to fit mine? Not sure if this is right but it seems to working fine!
I don't have the switch yet to operate the folding mechanism however I plugged my VCDS and function tested it and it folded and unfolded beautifully!

Here is my original controller

I wonder does any one know how I enable the ambient lighting affect on the underside of the mirror and when I should expect them to come on?

Search about retrofitting puddle lights. It's just adding numbers to code it. The lights turn on just when it's dark and when you unlock your doors and when you open your doors.

In regards to the issue of my rear windows not working, I literally discovered yesterday that it also meant my rear locks didn't work!!!

after some panic and regret I managed to re-code both door modules and now my mirrors, windows and lock function as they should but it gave me a fright as i've already moved on my old modules and mirrors!

Title: Re: Bert's GT Sport Twincharged - New front brakes :)
Post by: bluebert92 on April 25, 2016, 09:39:56 pm
Recently I have developed an odd slight misfire on idle and low range revs lumpiness. I'm aware of various issues with this engine which I believe to be Down to overfueling and the injectors.

However I am trying to find out why and what is causing this issue? I have got VCDS and have had a bit of look around and I have zero fault codes what so ever...

I set up the VCDS to look for misfires and put onscreen a misfire counter on each cylinder and it was reading 0 constantly...

I have also gone a bit further In the sense of looking at;

injector timing: at idle 0.51ms and at 3000 rpm 0.77ms and again at about 4000rpm 2.04ms

Fuel rail pressure: at idle 50.00mbar and at 3000 rpm being 85.00mbar

Boost pressure (N75): at idle 5% and at 3000 rpm 5%.

Okay so a development has occurred tonight, I've changed my spark plugs to NGK BKR7EIX's as recommended by REVO, Also put some new coil packs in as its a pain on my engine so I thought whilst I was there... In doing all of this I spotted a broken pipe? or at least a seal for a pipe which I'm hoping explains my issues! If anyone could tell me what this mystery pipe does It would be a great help!!!

So this is what I noticed immediately that the plastic retaining clip appears to have broken off which I thought odd.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fzz197%2Fbluebert92%2F50AD412A-56B2-4594-B938-33E175A0BFCA_zpsz4tyeyuf.jpg&hash=f0393fbc8d7f2c4ff700d31edceb4e5c5ba79d93)

As suspected this pipe literally moves on and off with the slightest touch. God knows whats its been doing while I've been driving around!, this has been fixed with a little bit of oil and a stainless steel ziptie to hold the pipe in place and its holding in just fine now :)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fzz197%2Fbluebert92%2F3983BEC0-CC9B-4127-85F5-8D95BFA8CF5E_zpsmbi4akwm.jpg&hash=becf474009ddea8de7c91aa5e7f0369738eae952)

Also the spark plugs I've replaced had seen better days but not the worst I've ever seen
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fzz197%2Fbluebert92%2F6C58DA2E-EAD9-40B1-82A6-D5C20245BEA0_zpsrahp2zyg.jpg&hash=25906d2eff01213dd1f4347a92c8cac719ce409b)

new spark plugs in :)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fzz197%2Fbluebert92%2F4D7AD163-9B3C-4358-A997-50AD00FAFCA6_zpsaqnr1kvb.jpg&hash=7e09745354387a919420fd71f19ea5c51ae3dd00)

So I took it for a drive earlier and the misfire has disappeared and its running really smooth now, smoothest its ran since I have owned the car, not sure whether it was the spark plugs or this pipe that was loose but its made such a difference! no more lumpiness.

Again thanks for your help guys!

What I'm asking is are these the older style ones which I think they are, and with the right modules and what not will all of the buttons works ?

Those are the old style buttons. They should work with a steering wheel module compatible with buttons.

Drunk driver?

I've also replaced those black plastic trims in my GT Sport. They look much better! :drinking: Bought new parts from VW since I couldn't get used parts without any damage. Pricey...

Can you post a couple more dash pics of the door trims? I've also thought of doing this to my car to lift the interior but yeah, pricey unless you get lucky! Looks good!!

Need som advice really concerning space saver wheels...

So I've got some decent brakes fitted which are larger then my originals by some distance which is great in everyway apart from The fact my space saver tyre no longer fits over the brakes.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fzz197%2Fbluebert92%2FE951C1F6-889B-4332-9AE8-0D67452BA3DA_zpskfhkezxh.jpg&hash=0bfa42aefc3f7b037ffcd04c6dd2e60c7437d4a0)

Which is currently an issue as I have a puncture and an important work meeting tomorrow which I'll have to figure out but- is there any way of buying a bigger space saver that will work?

First clean of 2017 it pains me to say.

Cars not running that great at the moment and I'm hoping it has something to do with either the pcv or dv so I'm looking into that now, I have read that mapping your turbo can lead to it having issues splitting

Had several faults show up on VCDS in relation to my lumpy idle...
A turbo bypas control valve circuit which was open circuit?
And a intermitten misfire on cylinder 4.

It prettt much prompted me into buying a GFB DV+ as it's the cheapest fix for a potential issue.

So i got to replacing my faulty DV for the GFB DV+.

Once I had removed the old

The old one didn't particularly look in bad condition
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fzz197%2Fbluebert92%2FDBE90DB3-3999-40B7-8C9D-016ADC4FD342_zpspzx8tzaw.jpg&hash=6ee8e24a4b046077c33396130f2b91c1f625bd1b)

And fitted :)

I have to say I was well impressed with the GFB DV , came with an idiots proof guide to fitting which was great as I'm an idiot.

Never the less, so far so good it's been on for about 120 miles and it's cleared all my faults I had on the VCDS scans and my car is running smooth again at low revs :)

Next up to change the fuel filter as I picked up a Bosch one on the cheap.

Poor picture I know but I debaged the rear the other evening and I'm much happier with how it looks!

Recently been working away in Norwich which isn't too far from where @Eddie-NL (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2345)  is based, so I took the opportunity to take my car up to him along with some High-line clocks I've had kicking around for about a year!

Within half an hour he had me all coded and fitted which I was well impressed with!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fzz197%2Fbluebert92%2F424CD2BC-1E17-4A38-9B77-1B5858511813_zpsxxwnzbue.jpg&hash=9660eece0f8b2d0f716c8cf2c23bf6be4e02f969)

I didn't have all the correct bits to get the MFSW working with it at all but sure as anything Eddie had sent me the links for all the parts I needed before I even got back to my hotel!

All been ordered and thanks for you help mate!

Unfortunately I've never driven a standard GTI so I can't compare the two!

A little update on fitting my MFSW, after visiting eddie I had ordered all the parts to make my Highline work correctly..

I ordered a new steering wheel which I didn't want but I needed the buttons from it, I ordered a new Highline control module and I've ordered a wiring loom from China.

I couldn't find a MFSW non DSG and flat bottom so I decided to butcher my current one to work...

When I bought it.

The wheel I bought which had the buttons fitted, also used this as a template for my Frankenstein.

Must have been a bad pothole, unlucky! I know some people manage to get damage paid for by councils if caused by damaged roads, might be worth a try.

Yeah it was huge! Unfortunately my council won't refund any damage unless the pothole has previously been reported, in this case it literally appeared over night so I was left with the bill :/

So this week has been an interesting one for sure, driving down a dual carriage way by my work and I notice I have got a flat tyre (only run 800 miles on a contact sport 5) so I go about changing my tyres on the side of a busy road which is no problem
 At all.

So the car is jacked up, using the emergency jack that comes with the spare tyre and I'm just about to take the rear tyre off but as I pull my tyre off the hub the jack snapped... like actually snapped in half. So there I am with my wheel now on the floor brake disc firmly rested on the inside of my alloy and the car now rested on top of my arm.

It was painful to say the least, I was on my own and my phone was in the front of the car. Luckily I was at the back of the car so I could wave down someone to help me - this alone took 10 minutes before a car stopped to help me, in that time 3 police cars, 2 ambulances and countless cars/vans drove past :/  by that point my waving was pretty frantic and luckily in the end someone did stop and used his jack to raise the car to free my arm.

Anyway, I'm looking for another jack, preferably one that I can fit in the spare tyre section, any ideas for a scissor jack or something I could put some faith?
