Title: Have I got Shock failure?

I've never had one before, but my wheel arch is splattered in lubricant and I jacked the car up. Inside the splash cover is the plastic lid/cover that sits on top of body where the piston becomes exposed. I have frequent knocking (thought it was the top mount). Is the shock gone and can it be repaired?.
