Title: Is 5w-40 ok for standard gti engine?
Post by: ReflexRob on August 21, 2015, 11:12:03 pm
Basically I used to have a BMW that used castrol edge 5w-40 oil and I've got some left over.

I know the manufacturers recommendation is 5w-30 but will it matter? It's vw 502 and 505 grade compliant.

Thanks

5w40 is far better for the engines than the 5w30.

I'm not a Castrol fan so would recommend the Millers Nanodrive instead.

Thanks,  I will switch to Millers but want to use the castrol up first rather than waste it as long as it doesn't cause harm

My manual States vw502 or vw504 for the gti I can't remember which?  but that equates to either 0w-30 or 5w-30, I use the Castrol edge stuff and I have been recommended millers but are there any others that are supposed to be better than the castrol?

And go for an Ester based oil whichever grade you buy. With a fully synthetic oil base they're inherently more stable ay high temps in any grade form.

I use Fuchs Titan Pro Race S 5w 40. Used it for years on all sorts of petrol vehicles. Expensive stuff just like Millers.
