Title: starter motor
Post by: tobievans on August 24, 2015, 09:13:32 pm
Hi, has anyone had starter motor problems? The garage that serviced the car say its common on mk5s but its news to me.
Basically when you turn the key, randomly, the motor seems to draw all the battery power killing the battery and resetting the computer. Then 2 seconds later it starts normally. The battery is fine and once running the engine is fine.
Any similar problems would be helpful thanks.

From my time on the forum I haven't seen this as a common problem at all....

I'd check your battery first, make it a habit of also turning off all electronics after each drive (auto lights, auto wipers, radio, air con etc.)

This will minimise the power drain on startup.

I believe a starter motor can cost quite a bit for the GTI.....

I do turn everything off anyway, I'm a bit odd about it. Worried that something unknown is causing it so if I change the battery and motor it will just happen again in 6 months

The older mk5 gttdi had trouble with the starters but  the newer model doesn't seem to suffer as bad now but if the battery is ok then it's possible it might be the starter motor
