Title: Mk5 - Laser Blue
Post by: ollie288 on December 20, 2009, 01:28:40 am
Hello all,

I thought I would show you all my pride and joy and how it has come on recently. I'm 17 and this is my first car. I love it to pieces. I plan to keep it for a few more years yet and get something with a little more oomph when insurance is not so much of an issue!

Well starting from the start:

Before I even had the car I bought a set of wheels. They were mercedes alphards. They were lovely but I sold them on and made £200 in the process. Before I wished I would have kept them but now I have my other set I am glad i didn't!  :jumpmove:

22/03/2009
I went looking for my first car. I went to a VW garage and the first car I saw I ended up buying! It was a Mk5 Golf 1.6 FSI SE Laser Blue.

29/03/2009
I picked the car up. Well I say I but I hadn't passed my test at this time so I was the passenger!  :signLOL:
She then spent a few months tucked away in the garage waiting for me to pass my test. A few little touches happened.

30/03/2009
Order my private 5-digit number plate.

Removed the badges of the car. Looks cleaner. Here are a few pics:

Next step to cleaning up the rear was removing the wiper. Here is a few pics:

A few comparison shots at VW dealer;

I thought the rubber grommet stuck out a bit so it was replaced with the glass version from venom motorsport. Although a little pricey, it looks 1000x better;

The first big change happened to my car when I bought a full GTI leather interior with door cards. It was fitted the following weekend. Not to bad of a job.
Here are a few pics:
A couple of comparison shots;

Totally changed the feel of the interior. A lot more classy!

22/06/2009
Added an leather armrest to the interior.

12/09/2009
Bought and fitted a blaupunkt tha-555 amp and Jl-audio sub mounted in a stealth box. I made quite a difference when you turn it up! Here are a few pics:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi619.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ftt272%2FOllie0804%2F015-3.jpg&hash=3661c4c138dfb80797a930ab966c66afc91e8b9a)

The amp is now under the carpet in the spare wheel. I cut a hole to house it securely, making sure there was enough airflow. I dont have a problem with overheating and it is a lot better out the way where it is not going to get damaged.   :jumpmove:

19/09/2009
This was a fairly big step. All of this to be fitted:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi619.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ftt272%2FOllie0804%2F001-1.jpg&hash=017ecfcd2d5a291b4581e2fcfe94ced740e9c324)
Mk6 Multi function steering wheel.
R32 Highline clocks.
RNS-510 with voice recognition.
Canbus 'S' version (to cope with all the new stuff and avoid battery drain!)
Here are a few pics of these fitted:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi619.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ftt272%2FOllie0804%2F007-5.jpg&hash=4d80307e75e583c44281c4051f4cb51172d6911b)

I will have to get pics of the R32 clocks. I love the white and blue lights! Everyone always asks do they match the needle colour to the car colour at VW! :signLOL:

03/10/2009
R32 rear lights fitted. A few pics:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi619.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ftt272%2FOllie0804%2F002-5.jpg&hash=8aac68db25dd73d091e5ac109e5c63bc2a00875b)

11/12/2009
Full GTI black upper fitted to interior. Including mirror, roof lining, a,b and c posts, all lights on roof etc and rear window surround. This removed the old looking cream bits!   Made it look more modern imo!

18/12/2009
Received Audi S-line split rims in 18" 7.5 et 54 fitment. Cleaned them up and applied 3 coats of rim wax to the entire wheels to keep them protected in the winter. Also changed the centre caps to VW ones. A few pics:

Had all the wheels off today and cleaned all under the arches and brakes etc. Also Tried one of the wheels on to check the hub diameter was correct. It is as there was no movement!
Here is pics of the trial fit:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi619.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ftt272%2FOllie0804%2F001-3.jpg&hash=3fb9a0a0eb328cad656d30de4f83e9e041a0e9da)

The brakes now look tiny behind the wheels!!
Any idea how I can remove that  line of gunk? My guess is I wont and it would need spraying?
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi619.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ftt272%2FOllie0804%2F007-4.jpg&hash=2831d9fe23384b9f352c4f034d621274e2fae315)
Also how to go about spraying the calipers?
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi619.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ftt272%2FOllie0804%2F006-4.jpg&hash=449fe2e8b8a216db84cb1948667ca294ca291a8c)
 :pomppomp:

I think we are pretty much up to date now. I may have missed a few things but I will update it. I will be getting some proper pictures soon and I will keep this thread regularly up dated.
A big thanks goes to Mortygttdi for all the help and advice he has given me. Cheers Darren  :happy2:

Nice work so far Ollie!  :congrats:

It may of been cheaper to buy a GT or GTI mind!

Rather than spray your brakes why don't you just buy a mint full set of GTI brakes from me?  :innocent:

It would have been cheaper but this was the best engine I could get. I wanted a 1.4 tsi 122. But nobody would insure me on it!  :sad1: I love mine anyway so I am happy for now!  :pomppomp:
I dont know where all the rich young kids driving ferraris go!

PMed you too!

But things like wheels, interior, Xenons and the RNS must push insurance up a bit too? Assuming of course that it's all declared as you are required to do?

The cost of a lot of these bolt-ons would surely have gone a long way in helping to pay for insurance too?

Post by: ollie288 on December 21, 2009, 05:56:40 pm
Yes the mods have put the cost up but I would have changed the 1.4 tsi as well so it would have cost me far more. I dont think they will be a major difference between the 1.6 fsi and 1.4 tsi anyway? I would prefer all my luxury bits on the inside to a engine that is still not going to set the world a light!  This car is currently costing 2.5k! Hopefully will come down soon. As I say I love the car and am not in the market to change it! Especialy when I get the exterior  sorted!
As I said in OP I will be getting a more performace orientated car in about 3-4 years when I can insure the car for less than what it actually cost!   :signLOL:

Clocks look Great Ollie  :happy2: Does anyone know if The Highline Digits can be changed to white like the Audi's??? Does the new MK6 have White Letters/numbers and would the unit fit the MK5 or would the Audi highline fit?  Would look great if it matched the RNS510  :happy2:

MortyGTTDI was talking about this a while ago. I think he said that the actual little screen could not be just swapped. I believe the mk6 does have white leds on it. Hopefully Darren will answer your question as I am not sure.   :ashamed: :happy2:

Mk 6 GTI steering wheel with MFS, i don't have MFS atm, RNS 510, convenience module and later next year Reverse camera as per Steve P. I have fitted Highline and switch for comfortheater, parking assist and autolevellers for xenons, also with lots of help from Gulfstream  :notworthy: a makeover from GTI to R20 inside and on the front  :congrats:

^ Same here regarding the Auto Levelers Ollie  :congrats:

I think if you've got the winter pack (like I have with washers), the whole Xenon retrofit can be done for under £900. I'm prepared to spend that as are you by the looks of it  :happy2: It's a price I'm prepared to pay anyway

The xenons cost me £320 and the levelers will cost me about £350 I believe which I dont think is too bad! I haven't got the washers and I dont think I will be getting them as I want to smooth the front bumper anyway!
My car is always kept clean anyway and I polished and used sealant on the headlights and the water beads off now!
It shouldn't be too much off a problem if I keep the car clean should it? :signLOL:  :happy2:

I think it's more the legality mate, no idea on the actual ins and outs as different people will tell you different things. My GTI has them anyway so if I fit auto levelers, I know I'll have an OEM factory fit headlamp system. That way, any insurance/police implications mean I'm in the green.
The actual washers themselves don't do a tremendous amount. I remember the old Volvo 850's used to have a washer arm on either side so it could scrape away the crap after the jets had fired. Old skool!  :chicken:

Where are these split rim pics?  :P

I know its legal issues but  some have fitted just the xenons and not had a problem. Also people who use aftermarket HID's dont have problems!
Anyway I dont want to start a big debate on the forum so Ill have to see what happens!  :happy2:

Ive haven't managed to get any pics yet! The car has been locked away in the garage and when I get it out I forget because im driving or doing something  :signLOL: :rolleye:

As long as there is room for the magnets to sit almost flush on the back of the bumper, then i cant see why not.

When are you fitting the R rear bumper?

Cheers Dan,

I have a few plans for the R bumper to make it a little different and it will obviously need painting. I am hopefully going to order all the bits I need for the rest of the car and get the car in the bodyshop to get all the work done on the whole car at one time. Hopefully make it a little cheaper.
Hopefully should be min of this mount/early feb.

Next thought is the coilovers fitted when they arrive hopefully this week! :pomppomp:

Ive been thinking recently about stopping spending any more on my car! I think I want a change! I have been looking into the GTI although cheap enough to buy not quite the same with insurance so that is ruled out I think!
I then started looking at the 1.4 tsi 140 and I think Im going to have to have a look into these deeper. My main reason is 5drs! I wanted a 3 door and still want a 3 door. I rushed in with the 5 door when I was young and foolish. (Still am ) I regret buying the 5 dr.
Also the engine. It is a nice engine and I have no complaints really but there is no room for improvement like the tsi's (remap etc)
I would move over all the things (rns mk6 wheel, xenons etc) and put mine back to standard and sell it!
Do you think I am crazy?

I planned on keeping it for 4 years (will have done 1) but I have lost excitement for it! I dont think I will lose to much on the car maybe a grand? Also alot of the mods will be used or sold for extra cash (Have most the standard bits in my garage. I am not sure what to do!  :rolleye:

The mk6 has really grown on me recently. Plus they have the engine I want, the 1.4 tsi 122 in DSG. (Can be remapped to around 155 bhp i believe). I am going to go and test drive one I think and see what I think.

I hope so to! The things that should fit:
RNS
Wheels (after a refurb!  :sad1:)
Steering wheel
Amp will fit although the stealthbox may not? I dont know if they have changed the boot shape.
Dont think I will have to many probs selling xenons, r32 rear lights and bumper, full gti leather interior as they are quite sort after!

We will have to see what happens. I havent even test drove one yet! (i hope they let me due to my age?  :ashamed:)

The insurance for a mk6 golf 1.4 tsi se 122 3 dr will be £1700 (can get cheaper probably just first quote)

I have a few questions about buying cars though. I have only had one and I walked in and payed for it so I am not to knowledgeable on this!

How much realistically should you be aiming for off the screen price?
Would it be better to part/ex mine or sell privately?
Should i look at finance or is that a no go? I will be able to get the cash but not right away so would finance be a sensible option to get the car right away? (I could part/ex mine for £xxxx but down a healthy deposit and only have a couple of thousand outstanding which could be paid in a couple of months. Would the dealer allow that?

Also what are peoples opinions on DSG? I will be test driving bit manual and dsg to formulate my own opinion but I though someone who uses dsg everyday would have a better insight than a 1hr test drive! It is a 7 speed box. Do all dsg have the flappy paddles to change gear manually?

Cheers :happy2:

EDIT - where have all my pics gone!

Does anyone have a round about figure of the top speed and acceleration of the 1.4 tsi when remapped to 150 (from 122) with a better intake system and maybe exhaust (If there would be any difference in performance when fitted!)
Would anything else improve the performance?

Bit of bad news for me today! You cannot get a 3dr with DSG!
Went for a test drive in the manual. The car felt solid and more sturdy than my mk5. The interior felt classy and road/wind noise was very good. Then the engine. I was not expecting much difference to my 1.6 fsi at stock level but I must say the engine felt torquey and had alot better response to mine. Also the gearbox and brakes felt better. (because it is a new car?)
Overall very impressed!  :pomppomp:
We will have to wait and see what happens. (Although I have just seen that the rocco comes with the same engine  :innocent:)

I cannot decide what to do for the best!!!!   :rolleye:

Option 1 - Keep current car and continue doing what I was doing and plow more money in even though I am not 100% happy with the base car.

Option 2 - Strip car and sell bits, p/x the car and buy a mk6. Modify to look something similar to this and sell when im 21.

Option 4 - Wait a few months leaving my car as it is then strip, p/x the car against a used mk6 or rocco saving a couple of k but not having the choice of options.

It would be nice to own a brand new car knowing that no one has ever driven it before me and to spec all the options I want on it.

What would you do.....
Major decisions!  :chicken:

current car - if your doubting it now, the moment you see either a rocco or golf6 at a show youre gunna hate it

golf - my preference as you know, and theres not many modded ones around at the moment so what you loose in power you can more than make up for in style and cred, easier to sell on... just like a golf

rocco - pretty, not my bag though, and a smaller fan base to sell it to when the time comes (most like them, not many actually own them...you gotta ask why?)

wait - theres no fun in that, cant beat a virgin ride  :innocent:

Option 3 if it's possible, the rocco will just feel more 'special'. It will turn more heads if you get it right and you won't need a golf's practicality at your age lol. Option 2 if the roccos insurance rating is too high. Which company said £1700 for tsi 122? Could be useful to me.

I know this is what I am thinking. I dont think I want to put anymore money in as I am not happy with it.

golf - my preference as you know, and theres not many modded ones around at the moment so what you loose in power you can more than make up for in style and cred, easier to sell on... just like a golf

Even with the simple mods in pics it does look great IMO. Its also a bit cheaper than the rocco

rocco - pretty, not my bag though, and a smaller fan base to sell it to when the time comes (most like them, not many actually own them...you gotta ask why?)

They are very pretty cars (Saw one today which made me think wow) I think it would feel more special than the golf and I think I prefer the looks. I know what you mean but Im sure it would sell do you not think? Thinking about it I have not seen many roccos on the road at all which is a plus to me as it will be more exclusive. Why do you think that is VC about most liking and not owning? Im not sure lol!

wait - theres no fun in that, cant beat a virgin ride  :innocent:

Very good point made!  :innocent:

I am hoping they will be the same insurance group as the mk6 because it is the same engine similar price (couple of k in it). The company was churchill with multicar discount! :happy2:

Well firstly I'd sell rdfcpete the Xenons and Audi Splits...

  :jumping:

On a serious note, why not get a MK5 TSI like DubwayDans, save some money over for an ED30 or whatever bigger engine car you fancy when the insurance allows?

The above you list are a lot of cash for an okay engine when your next car might be a short term purchase anyway, have I got the jist right there?

From the few you've listed, for looks and fun it would be the Sirocco but ultimately, it's completely you're preference and you should do what's top of your list bud. Looks like either way it'll be a money pitt so make sure you drive them all.

Just my shilling worth

Well I cant get insurance on the 140 (dubwaydans) and a 3dr mk5 1.4 tsi 122 is like rocking horse sh*t. The money is not really an issue as in saving for my next next car! I would save closer to the time so wont really effect this purchase.

The above you list are a lot of cash for an okay engine when your next car might be a short term purchase anyway, have I got the jist right there?

They are a fair sum of money but they are the best engine (remaped) I can get. I will be keeping this car 3 years which is alot longer than the 10 months of my current car! 3 years is quite a long time so I want to get it right.

I think every car I will ever own will be a money pit!!! I agree I am tempted to the rocco atm but I need to confirm insurance on it. I have drove the mk6 and I was impressed with that. I think I will test a rocco at the weekend to get a feel.  :happy2:

Ollie if you have a bit of cash to throw at a car i think the rocco is worth considering especially if your only planning on cosmetic mods. Have you seen X5Peas rocco in members rides?

Next year im pretty sure i will chop the golf in for a Rocco R, maybe a Golf R, maybe S3 etc etc :P

That is the car I want most. I have been in today to see what sort of deal they could do and he said that the scirocco will hold the rrp as they dont need to push to sell them. The rocco is around 2k more which is fine as they are alot more sporty and expensive looking!
Just need to sort insurance!  :fighting:

No I didn't I will give them a search now and see! It would be great. I have been put off the mk6 a little when I had a look round a rocco today! The exterior looks better imo and the interior feels classy even if you have a base model (Unsure of my options yet! )

They wouldn't let me test drive it as it is a customers car and it was sold but they let me sit in it and get a feel.
Here it is:

ohh and greenlight dont insure under 21's apparently!  :sad1:

It is so annoying being able to go out and buy any car say a rocco 210 DSG, ed30 etc. I could buy the car, tax it maintain it but cannot insure it!  Because I am under 21  I will drive into a tree! Utter BS if you ask me!  :fighting2:

Base model looks better than Mk6 imo and has so much potential visually. The mk6 you have posted looks fantastic dont get me wrong thee is something about the rocco though.

Ouch, would it be worth getting your olds to insure it and have you as a named driver, some companies still give named drivers NCB so may work out cheaper until you hit 21 plus you get the car you want!

Maybe worth looking into. Is that legal as I would be the main driver and I wouldn't let my old folks in it without supervision  :signLOL:

The plan was new scirocco 122 with a few tweaks for 3 years and when the warranty is up trade in and get a new car with better performance. I really hope I can find somewhere to insure me!
The problem is because it is a new engine VW haven't even got a insurance group on it (it says TBA on there website) This means alot of the insurance companys cant give me a quote because they dont have the engine listed either!  :sad1:
It would work out perfectly to. If I ordered this weekend I would get 5% off due to 70's VAT offer at VW and it would arrive new in time for my bday for insurance!

Right after much time and thought the golf is staying. I would have loved a scirocco and was close to buying one in the dealership until I phoned my insurance!
The company I am with says they wont insure my full stop as there is a 21 restriction on the rocco. Admiral say they will but a the cost of.... wait for it..... £3890 with £1000 excess! I am not willing to spend 4k on insurance so I am waiting.
Also the golf yes it looks nice but I cant justify the cost £18000 on just a golf! So I am staying put for the time being!

If I put my wheels back on with the curb marks on will it ruin the lip of the wheel or will it be fine? I mean with salt an stuff getting in there?
I am getting them refurbed but I dont know if I want to change the centre colour yet. I need to see it lowered to see. To lower it I obviously need the wheels on!
What do you think. The lip is not the same as the centre it is polished I think.

Don't know if this will alter your thinking but if you were to use Direct Line as your insurance company and insure the new car under your dads name with you as a named driver then you would be able to build up your own no claims discount.

Just to throw in my 2p's worth I'd go for the Rocco over the mk6, very sexy cars :happy2:

Something is not quite right here!
2009 - 3 dr - 122 tsi golf - value £18000 - 1yncb = £1360
2009 - 3 dr - tsi - rocco - value £18000 - 1yncb = £4k

Something does not add up in my head, an extra 2.7k just because it is a coupe? I have a sneaking suspicion that this is for the 160 super and turbo charged model as the 122 is not an option just tsi!

Does anyone work for an insurance company here?

What do comparison sites say?

Does it drop if you change variables like annual mileage and your age, to see what figures you get with different data?
Obviously just as a test to see how it varies, not suggesting lie on the premium form

Will other modified premium policies touch you? AFlux, Ephant?

Yeah the front has got to go down. I am waiting for a new strut as the one on there is locked in position!  :sad1:
Im hoping it is a manufacturers fault so I get my money back!

The car is now immobilized on my drive! Warning lights + Bad noises + nothing loose anymore = Garage costs!  :sad1: Got to get up at silly o clock now to get public transport to work!  :sad1:

Anyway it has got me thinking (again) about maybe selling it on. I am thinking maybe to get the original suspension refitted to the car and get it put back to standard.

Now I can get insurance on the golf tsi 140 (not that cheap) but I am willing to pay it for a better car. It is the older one (same front as mine) not the black gt grill.
Does anyone know if there are any major differences between the old and new? Or was it just a face lift and the same engines? Also what could I expect to get performace wise from the 140 ie remap, intake, exhaust?

Here is a video that shocked me a little. Remap vs non remap. Quite a difference!:

It was the bearing which was broke on the car. The back collar was also jammed at the lower height so there was no way of moving that. So the front was stuck high and the rear low! The garage spent three hours trying to fix them and ended up putting the standard back on. So £1100 later and I still  have standard suspension!  :stupid:

Unsure yet. If it is proven as a manufacturing fault (Dont think two faulty in one set would be? And even if it was will they say it was  :chicken:) They will refund the cost if not thats it. I think its a case of money and toilet......

Im unsure what to do. I doubt I will get the money back for the garage  (£400) and if im honest I doubt I will get the cost back on the struts.
Wether to just leave it and just forget about the cost. Or spend a load more money to get them replaced and refitted.
Not been the best outcome I must admit. :sad1:

Also i think i am right in saying that Venom must give you your money back regardless, its there responsibility.  :happy2:

They were not fitted by a garage. They say they will give me my money back if they are tested positive for a manufacturing fault. If the faults were inflicted when being fitted they said they will do nothing.

Is this the distance selling act you are referring to? Will this still be able to be used even if they were damage during the fitting stage and they have been used? (for a week)

But how can you damage them beyond repair just on the fitting, and surely the garage would be able to tell whether this the case.

Erm im not sure tbh. The adjusting collar has locked on the front passenger side and the rear passenger side. The garage didn't say anything like that they just said they tried adjusting it and they were looked solid (tried for 3 hours).

Ill have to see what they say. Preferably I would like to send them back and get a refund as I am saving for a new car.
I may phone them again to see what they say about the rear one aswell.  :happy2:

I have been thinking about it recently and i have decided that I will not be going any further with this car. I will be returning it back to standard and selling it. In favor of a 1.4 tsi 140.
Somethings will make there way into the new one somethings will be sold.
The insurance will cost me around the same as the first year on the 1.6 (but I will have the 1years NCB)
So roll on June!  :pomppomp:

Ollie,

Slightly random but were/are you happy with how the Audi splits sit on the Golf in terms of their stature?
Knowing you  I'd of thought you'd wanted them to sit a bit fatter/further out?

I'm thinking of getting the same rims and wanted to know if that offset wasn't perhaps the best, or were you happy with it?

Cheers pal. Be good to get your opinion.
Title: Re: Mk5 - Laser Blue
Post by: ollie288 on February 24, 2010, 07:37:15 pm
I love the Audi Wheels in terms of design and size. You are right the offset is high and in the pics on the previous page they sit quite far in the arches. I placed 10mm spacers in there and they looked perfect.

I like to drive my car without worrying about going round a corner too hard or too fast. This is another reason I picked a sensible fitting wheel. I could have gone for a wide, low offset wheel but I couldn't be done with rubbing and other issues that come with them.

I am very happy with the wheels.  :happy2:

Perfect. 10mm is just the job then?
Mind firing some pics off to me with the spacers fitted fella?

Tbh I've no experience of spacers, what are the implications? Just fit straight to the hub then nothing else needed? I'll be running stock suspension FYI

I dont think I have any pics mate as I was waiting to get the suspension sorted before I took any but it didnt happen.

Yeah they just sit on the hub and the wheel sits on them. Make sure you get the hub centric ones. There is a review on here done by greenouse on spacers. :happy2:

Time for a little downdate.
The amp and sub are now gone. The R32 bumper is for sale. I have decided to keep the car I have for a while and strip it down of the bits that I can lose. I have decided on the outside I will keep the wheels, xenons and maybe the r32 rear lights unless someone wants them.
And on the inside im going to keep the leather, RNS and maybe the steering wheel unless somebody wants that too. (would have controller to)
The reason is I am changing careers and money may be a little tight for a while. :scared:
I have coilovers, a GTI gear knob for sale and Climate controls with heated seats switches with the kufatec wiring loom if anyone wants that too.
As you can see I have a fair amount of money tied up in bits and bobs.
Now onto my next question, this is how the car looks now;
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fzz259%2Follie288%2FSDC11220.jpg&hash=4c09feb03518057b97e48ce9be13e092729f6cfd)
After having coilovers on for a while and seeing what a transformation it made to the look of the car, i have been thinking about finishing the exterior with a set of springs. Do you think 35mm would make the difference in looks or would it be a waste?
Sorry for long winded post.  :ashamed:

I'm looking for something the rides like the OEM setup but will sit 35mm or so closer to the deck.
BTW, where you posted higher up, I think 35mm would definitely be noticeable and would be a nice gap closure in the arches. I would certainly not write it off  :happy2:
