I have access to a firm of motor engineers through work so asked for the latest Glass' guide price on mine and the retail price was just over £10k (high spec, only 56k on the clock)
The engineer said "wow" in terms of depreciation as the book price is only a few hundred less than last year.
Good to know they remain sought after

It's the way it goes for Golf special editions.
I had a VR6 and the highline version always fetched a big premium.
Same for the mk4 Gti. I sold my 2000 year for £940 the other week. A 25th anni are for sale for 2-3k in similar condition albeit a few years younger.
-
yeah i remmeber the 25th anni would hold its price well a few years ago. used to go for like 5-6+ on a 02 plate
-
It's not the same for R32s they can be had for very cheap now
-
Some folks are really taking the pee with prices. 12k for cars that don't even look tidy. People jumping on the bandwagon.
-

Mk5 or Mkiv? I think the tax bands killed the mk5 R32, whereas mkiv - yes, there's some very dodgy ones out there, but cherished examples still command quite a premium for the age of car.

It seems a strange market to me, some cars have been for sale for nearly a year at dealers.
The consequence of this is some private sellers offer at the same price and assume it will sell due to rarity?
I have been on the look out for a car to keep, but many cars are nowhere near as good as the seller thinks and so many cars seem to need cambelt, waterpump, dv and air con sorting, which gives the impression they have not been that well looked after.
Thankfully I am in no rush and the air cooled Porsche and property portfolios have kept me in the game for an ED30 when a nice one appears!
-
Yes they hold their money well Ed30's, Ofcourse as mentioned not all the higher priced cars are in good enough cosmetic or mechanical condition to warrant the price they are advertised for.
One owners idea of mint condition drastically varies from anothers.

Mine will see 100k miles next year.... will be worth FA then! :signLOL:

There is one on eBay at the moment for £13,995.00.
Any idea what mine would be worth? I've had fun but it could be time for something new...
36,000 miles
3 door
Diamond Black Metallic
DSG
Fully loaded - think it has pretty much every option? Including RNS510, cruise control, winter pack, lux pack, xenons, sunroof, reverse parking sensors.
Full VW service history.
Excellent condition. No kerbed alloys etc.
I've always tried to run it on Tesco 99 fuel or V-Power. 4 x Goodyear Eagle F1s. Had cambelt and water pump changed last year (as it was due to age) and has had the DSG service.
Completely standard. Ready to go - no problems or faults.
It's even got one year to go on an extended VW warranty so if I could transfer it I'd throw that in too...
I've not seen another like it with the spec/condition and mileage for the age...
-
It's worth, what the market is willing to pay. That's the reality of it all.
-
Jamie, slightly higher mileage than yours, but this really nice example seemed to take a while to sell offered at £10,495.
I am only interested in a manual myself, so I didn't look at this one.
I can only assume it didn't sell above the asking price?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Golf-gti-edition-30-/321828209595?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEDWX%3AIT&_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=%252BnrIbC133DoUhid6u2VOsFXuC50%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc
I have seen a few cars offered around the £10k mark only to see them re-appear with the dealer mark up to sit in the traders "museum" for months...... These cars do seem to be mileage sensitive, there should be a premium for lower miles, but these cars don't quite have collector status to justify too high a premium as yet.
-
Will they ever qualify for "collectors" status?
How many limited edition 30 golfs actually rolled off the production line?
Must have been thousands

Seems high to me. Was thinking of selling my Manual Black one (also with S/roof, xenons, winter etc etc) for £8K, which is mapped, Helix Clutch, Loba pump, FSH (VW), cambelt/pump, A/C, Big service all done last year at VW etc etc. It's on 92K. I don't think DSG and <60 fewer K miles commands an extra £6K tbh.

I agree with you, it's just that at the moment with classic and rare cars being "hot", you see many trade ads mentioning "limited edition" etc.................. On the rarer cars that are making big ££££, the lower mileage really makes a difference, once the car has transitioned from mode of transport to a commodity in it's new asset class!

There was only around 2500 made , several now gone to car heaven . The ED30 will be a future classic (I am virtually sure of it , seems nearly all my old cars have become classics like Mini Cooper Datsun 280 MK1 RS2000 MK2 RS2000 MK1 GTI etc) and if i had space for mine i would have kept it for good . Classic have to be totally original and many ED30's have been altered too much . If i had space i would definitley buy one of the latter registered ones preferably under 40k , 5 door in Black or Red .
-
My edition 30 is on 94k bought it 88k for £8000. Before buying mine i looked at others that had done less mileage for more money but they weren't half as clean as mine or aswell spec'd. I used to buy cars on mileage when I first started driving but now It's a different market. When I got my mk1 leon cupra r I looked for 6 months and at loads of low mileage cars but ended up buying one at 102k which was immaculate compared to some with half the mileage. Some of the edition 30 out there are definitely over priced for low quality and low spec. I think the edition 30 is a special car and will be a future classic until then it's what your willing to pay or willing to sell for

Ultimately any car is worth what someone or the current market dictates!
As you said and I have to agree, I used to also many years ago look for cars on mileage and by that presume that the lowest mileage cars would be the better examples but after viewing these cars you soon realise that this is not always the case and in the end I have ended up buying a higher mileage example that was cheaper and in better condition!
Nowadays low spec is irrelevant to me as is mileage as a rule but in an ideal world if you could have everything then great, Both my TR ED30's have been basic in spec, Both Manuals, No Zenons, No MFSW, Basic RCD300 head units but at the time I was looking to buy they where both the best examples out of multiple cars that I viewed!
I sold my last ED30 for good money and it sold quickly too, The buyer had looked at other better specced cars at around the same price but they did not have the condition to warrant the price so he bought mine and without haggling too.
As you said the ED30 is a Special Edition car and warrants a higher price than the GTI and in theory should depreciate much less, Back in 2013 when I bought my first ED30 the market was very similar to how it is today which shows the ED30 is still commanding good money.
I would like to think if I advertised mine I would get good money for it as it is a decent example in my eyes.

2285 according to vw. Cars with plaque numbers higher than that are replacement ones they somehow managed to wangle.

Don't think both parts of that statement are true :innocent:

I went into my local vw dealer with my log book and they sorted mine out, received my plaque within the week

I think it's worth more to me the fact of the car being immaculate and low mileage to having all the extras .. Extras are nice but low mileage reflects the car is Gona last you longer ...
-
I've been looking for over a month now for an ed with dsg and I can tell you the ones attracting the highest prices are the unmodified ones. As other posters have pointed out the selling price is what someone is prepared to pay. Yes there are some well looked after examples but equally some poor ones. How many people for example would check to see if the front wings etc have been replaced under VW warranty and if they haven't how long have you got left to make a claim. I saw an R32 for sale that was asking for top money yet had probably 5-600 pounds worth of accident damaged paintwork to be done - if you want to sell your car be sensible with the pricing.

According to this site, there are 1275 licenced, with a few SORN.

with an additional 843 here:

not sure why the the ED30 is split over two model names.
-
I believe it's manual and automatic.
