Noticed a weird noise the other day when I pulled up and got out the car. It is a weird clicking sound coming from between drivers door and front wheel, don't think it is coming from inside the cabin although I can hear it when sitting inside. It seems to be coming from somewhere under the arch as I can't locate it when looking under the bonnet. Originally I thought it was cooling down as it was around the area of the coolant tank but its been happening for few days now and just done some bits on the car today and it hasn't moved since yesterday so is stone cold and the noise is still there.

The noise is pretty clear in this video, ignore noise halfway through my car locked itself (another question is it normal for car to relock itself after unlocking if key doesn't go into ignition?). I've read something about the alarm siren going faulty and making noise? It sounds like a speaker with interference going through it rather than a physical/mechanical noise.

well if its alarm siren its located on the drivers side wing. If you take the wheel off and the plastic inner wheel arch it be right at top on metal box pop the 2 rivets and it will slide right out and have a listen to it ???
If not see who has VCDS and plug it in if its faulty it should come up with a code ???
Where are you located if not to far from me ill scan it with VCDS?
-
possibly the fuel pipes where they run through the body work it was causing similar noise if you remove the tray under the body on drivers side you will see where the pipes run through the body try holding / moving them to see if it has any effect on noise if so i cut up some 15mm pipe insulation and stuffed it in around the pipes no more noise hope this helps

Cheers. Not got the room to get the car up and get the wheel off at my gfs but will investigate when I go home next. Was planning to get the liners off and clean behind them as I've not had the car long and was loads of mud in places when I got it.
I am located near Wimbledon/Kingston area but also West Sussex near Chichester some weekends. Believe my mate still has a VAGCOM back in sussex from his VW days so will have to head to his sometime.

Would this happen while the car is parked up though? My car hasn't moved for 24 hours now and it is still making the noise.
Cheers

sorry no it only happened with engine running on tickover

Ah, mine is pretty much constantly doing it now regardless of engine on or off, hot or cold. The sound definitely sounds like its coming from a speaker or some kind of electrical component. Just been reading another thread about alarms failing and how to test and did notice the other day when I was working on the car and had the windows down I set the alarm of when I locked it but there was no siren, just hazards flashing. Hopefully related but bit odd for the siren speaker to be making weird clicking noises by itself, perhaps loose connection or damaged wiring? A service report from I think last year (previous owner) did state the battery was in poor condition so is something I am looking to do if that could be related. I guess disconnecting the battery should silence this noise if it is coming from something electrical?

Ok so had the arch liners off at the weekend to do the DV and the noise is 100% the alarm box. Had my mates VAGCOM and scanned and only fault that came up was the alarm, think it said the siren couldn't be reached or was disconnected. Still making the clicking noise. Tried jiggling the wire and reaching inside the little metal box to poke around but didn't seem to change anything. Is the wire connected inside the metal box or is there a connecter somewhere down the other end of it inside the the engine bay/behind the dash that it connects to that may have gone?
Anyone know the price of a new alarm siren box? Think I remember reading it being close to or over £100  and obviously has to be drilled out and riveted or bolted back on. Any other routes to go down to troubleshoot this? Like I said, the alarm goes off as expected and indicators flash, just no siren whatsoever but the speaker has some kind of connection as it is getting power and making the weird clicking noise.
My mate suggested taking the fuse for the alarm out as it is pretty useless without a siren anyway so wouldn't matter if it didn't go off but wasn't sure if killing the alarm system would affect anything else?
cheers.

I bought a second hand siren from ebay for £20. My siren was completely destroyed. Think the part number is 1K0951605D. If you are going to rivet it back on you will need some large rivets and a good rivet gun.
You may also be able to disconnect it see pic below.

I have a spare alarm from an old car - welcome to it for the cost of postage if you find you need it!

I may take you up on that, is the speaker bit separate to the surrounding metal box? I assume it just drops into the box which is then riveted on. Can the box be bolted back on some other way or would it have to be riveted back on? Don't have a huge assortment of tools at my disposal so would have to buy a rivet gun/tool.
Cheers.

The siren is separate from the box iirc it clips in place. You can use bolts on the box.
