Title: Do I need to disconnect battery? HELP!
Post by: ashbignall on September 11, 2015, 08:42:02 pm
Hi guys,

Thanks for the help so far. I intend on changing my glow plugs tomorrow. I'm following the instructions on this link:

http://uk-mkivs.net/topic/99362-bkd-juddering-issues-solved-how-to/ (http://uk-mkivs.net/topic/99362-bkd-juddering-issues-solved-how-to/)

So far I have removed the timing belt cover, removed the 2 bolts connecting the 4 pipes to the intake and am considering removing the air intake. At the moment the rocker cover still won't lift. It is being held in by somewhere but can't figure out what.

Would it be the air intake holding it in? If so I am going to have to remove the sensor which leads me to my next questions of whether I need to disconnect the battery? I'm wary of disconnecting the battery because I don't want to risk losing all of my radio settings etc...

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Have you removed ALL the screws holding the rocker cover in place?  If so you will need a flat screwdriver to ease the cover off  CAREFULLY as the rubber gasket can be reused if in one piece

really with removal of any electrical component you should remove the battery.. however if you can find the fuse for the glowplugs id just do that and wait 15 minutes to make sure for any reason theyre not active and scalding hot when you remove them

I managed to get into the rocker head and now I'm faced with the "oily inside".

The instructions state:

"Once in the oily bit you will notice a black plastic cable housing running right to left between the two cams. You should then notice four different coloured wires exit from the rear of it and under the rear cam. If you follow each one down to a small black plug, this is the electrical connection to the glow plugs. GENTLY lift this off and out of your way."

I'm following the green wire and I simply can't get my fingers in to remove it. Any tips? Pliers?
