Title: Bad rust on Arches from previous owner.

Hi ladies and gents.

I just bought my MK5 GTi last week and the previous owned had the car lowered far too much which caused the wheels to rub on the aches thus causing serious rust on the arches. The guy I bought the car off was kind enough to admit this and took £600 off the car total. So my question is, how much ROUGHLY should I expect to pay to get these arches repaired? Bearing in mind the rust is pretty serious. I'm obviously willing to pay whatever but just looking for a rough estimate. Here are some pictures, thanks!

To be honest, depending how how bad the arches and on all 4 £600 would probably be about right. If it's just light surface rust it will be less I'm guessing. Best thing to do is get a handful of quotes.

The back arches seem to be perfect, no signs of rusting anywhere on them. Took it to my local body shop yesterday and they quoted £400 for the front 2 arches. Seemed pretty steep, I'll just keep trying different places. Cheers pal

Take it to a VW dealer, they will replace them for free, Mine took less than 36 hours!

I doubt they will do it for free if the cause of the rust is the suspension being lowered to the point the tyres rub into the arches! But you never know!

My car was on air when I took it to them and they didn't comment on it :happy2:

Really? Definitely going to take it to my VW dealer this weekend. I'd be so happy if they done it for me. Finding it so hard to find places near by that will do it for a decent price. Heres hoping!

Try VW and make sure to try other VW dealers nearby if one turns you down as some are more than willing than others i've found.. Failing that.. in my opinion you pay for what you get with paintwork.. A garage near me was offering a full front end respray for £400 as an offer.. but then another garage which i would personally use would charge around £800 and i know they would do a better job but the question is.. would you be happy with either result and is it worth that extra cost to you?..
