I got an audible beep and warning to "STOP", check coolant when I started my car last week. Turned the engine off, checked level, OK. Restarted car again and problem went away. Suspected expansion tank sensor. Took the car to Gilders and they were kind enough to check car and came to the same conclusion. The sensor is prefitted to the tank, so had to order a new one. Quite reasonable at £11. Not fitted yet and I'm still getting the fault, that clears after turning on/off engine. Just wondered if anyone else had the same problem??

I've had the orange warning on the display saying check washer fluid... never the red one saying stop... what's the difference?
-
Washer fluid warning will be the windscreen wash bottle, The red one I had is the engine coolant level warning.

I had the same problem in my TDI a few months back and changed the bottle but it didnt cure it . I disconnected the battery and the warning cleared for a few months . Its been randomly appering again lately but going off of its own accord .

Liamo have you actually checked the coolant? im in denial at the moment cos my cylinder head is porous but just putting it off until It finally goes then in goes the S3 engine  :happy2:

I had exactly the same problem yesterday, used the car monday and it was fine and coolant level was ok. left it in the garage overnight and came to start it yesterday morning and STOP came up on the screen. turned the car off and back on again and it cleared. what i also noticed was that my coolant had mysteriously dissappeared. Topped it back upto full and checked for leaks and nothing found. Ran the car all today with no problems and coolant level hasnt moved.
im confused to where it went lol

just a small update on this, i researched some thing called K-Seal which is a new coolant formula that seals the hole, cracks whatever it is but also mixes with the coolant so doesn't discolour the tank or coolant...i was very sceptical but tried it anyway 2 weeks later and all is well no coolant loss at all :happy2:
Well happy

I get the same coolant warning, but only when the temperature is near freezing or below (which is most days at the moment). No coolant loss or other issues, so will probably change the sensor and see if this cures it.

Mine uses about 250ml of coolant every 6-8 weeks :(
Think the water pump needs replacing with the timing belt at the next service. Can't see a leek from anywhere, coolant usually leaves chalky white marks.
It also uses a bit of oil too. 250ml per 2000miles.
