Decided to smarten up my rear end and found Klii Motorwerkes in the USA who do all sorts of bits & bobs in the way of vinyl inserts for VW badges. Out of all the graphics that they have to offer, I was after a nice old plain Steel Grey rear badge insert. They had United Gray advertised which we all know is the same as our Steel Grey. So, I went ahead and ordered a couple.
They do both pre-cut ones that you are meant to fit without needed to remove the badge, or a complete circle of vinyl which you stuck under the badge.
Kenny is a great bloke to deal with - nothing is too much trouble for him, so here is the result. Looks pretty good to me!
If you contact him, let him know I sent you!
Cheers
Paul.

The first one I tried to fit was one of the pre cut-out ones. I actually had the badge/lock unit out of the car at the time as I was fitting a RVC. Lining up the sticker was easy because I was changing to the black badge as well, so it wasn't in situ at that point.
Kenny sent me a revised colour sticker at that point as it was before he was happy with the colour match. He hadn't been asked for Steel Grey before at that time.
The second time, I went for one of the solid circle ones, rather than the pre-cut. With the boot lock still in the tailgate, I removed the black badge first. I was lucky enough to have some low-tack application tape (bit like wide masking tape but lower tack) which I stuck on top of the entire sticker and holds it all in position while you apply it. I then cut round the backing square that the vinyl circle was supplied on, slightly bigger than the circle. I next held this in position behind the badge so could see which bits would be visible.
While holding the sticker in place behind the badge, I lightly marked on the face of the application tape with a pencil which bits were going to be visible. I then cut away as little as I needed to well inside of my lines, leaving it all as a single piece, so that the holes for the 'pegs' on the back of the badge were uncovered. This meant that I had ended up with a sticker similar to the pre-cut one, but with the vinyl extending under the badge at all points so there was no chance of getting any gaps showing.
I could then peel away the top edge of the backing paper and position the sticker centrally on the face of the boot lock. Stick the top on first and then peel away the rest of the backing and stick down as you go. The application tape makes it easy to do in one go as everything is held in place. Finally carefully remove the application tape from the face, leaving the new sticker stuck on. Refit the badge on top and the job is complete!
Trying to fit a complete circle would have been tricky due to the surface of the boot lock face not being flat.
I hope that makes some kind of sense and helps a bit!
Cheers
Paul.

I ordered a badge insert and have not had a good experience
it just will not stick and has started to lift on most of the edges
I cleaned the badge inserts with apc then soapy water left it to dry for about 3 hours the heated it with a hair dryer i also put a bit of heat into the sticker and it will just not stick
looks like i have wasted my money :ashamed:
I have also emailed Kenny but i can't see what he can do about it know except send me a new one
after this experience i would get a solid circle one if i was going to do it again it will be alot more hassle to fit it but the badge will hold it in place
the colour and fit are great but if it dont stick its a waste of time
-
Oh no that doesn't sound good. I didn't do anything special re cleaning. I think I just gave it a quick wipe with some white spirit beforehand. Everything seemed to stick fine. Hope you get it sorted.

i bought a complete mk6 handle, where the logo splits away, colour coded the bakcing to match my car, then painted the logo.

I can only speak from my experiecnce which was sticking onto a RVC rear badge with the actual emblem removed first. I initially used the 'cut inserts' version and later a 'full circle' version, both of which stuck brilliantly. I only changed it as the colour of the first test one was a bit out.
The first one was still very well attached when I came to remove it to replace it.
I don't know whether a standard rear badge has the same surface as this..
