I have tailgate corrosion around the VW badge/handle area. VW have refused to repair.
So, I'm thinking of just swapping the entire tailgate for another 2nd hand one without the problem..
Is it much of a job swapping the tailgate over? I've seen one complete with lights/handles etc local to me that's at a reasonable price.

I have the same issue, just wondering what VW said about refusing if they gave a reason? I've got some front arch rust coming through and some on the boot around the badge so was hoping to get VW to sort it at next service. Cheers.

It was classified (twice) as "edge and fold" corrosion and not "through panel corrosion" that would be covered. Its been officially declined by VW UK.

I had tailgate corrosion too just below the badge, lucky for me vw offered 50% and the garage I took it to covered the other 50%.
One thing you need to bear in mind is the cable covers. Vw updated the design slightly. Other main thing to consider I reckon would be just the packing away of the wiring. But I'm Assuming you would be ok with that.

I changed mine as VW refused mine, similar reasons. If you can get a secondhand GTI tailgate with the correct coloured glass you won't have the pain of changing the glass and swapping the spoiler over. Take your time with swapping the wiring and get a second set of hands to list the new one in place. £50 for the tailgate, £70 to pay someone to change the glass I made most of that back on eBay selling the duplicate parts.
-
Where did you get your glass changed? My tailgate is fine but its sporting green glass rather than the blue it should have!
-
Got a recommendation from the owner local garage about a company that changes screens for Jag/ Bentley dealers so thought they must be good. Autoglass and the like either won't do it or do it badly, I know from experience. The bloke cut out the green one neatly enough for me to sell it.
-
Thanks mate, I guess the £70 was for fitting? not including the glass?
-
Yep, used the original bluey.

I changed the bootlid on mine when the rear glass got smashed, think the whole boot with electrics was about £70, so preferred this over insurance claim + hike.

Locating the bootlid on your tod isn't easy though, best with two peeps. :happy2:

Another consideration which I don't know if you guy can answer. I have an 05 and the aerial /antenna is built into the rear screen, do newer tailgate still have compatibility?
-
Mine's a 55 plate, replaced with a Pirelli rear, so about 2008, no issues :happy2:
