Title: Carbon/Vinyl wrap on steering wheel inserts
Post by: icenutter on December 23, 2009, 01:44:47 pm
The steering wheel inserts on my GTI were a real mess as the surface of the plastic had started to come away;  I reckon the person that had the car before me wore it away with rings or long nails.  I looked at getting some OSIR Carbon Fibre replacements, but then remembered I haven't won the lottery.

So...

I've covered them in some vinyl carbon fibre I got from a group buy on detailingworld.co.uk
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm3.static.flickr.com%2F2488%2F4208057007_3539bb5685_o.jpg&hash=201f47a4710e6da538c0de79db212aae9a0fdcfa)

You can see some of the marks here, but they are much worse in reality.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm5.static.flickr.com%2F4017%2F4208822008_d69f40a271_o.jpg&hash=08592073972d37fe4b75dff5da2808c5de58ad44)

The whole process was pretty easy, and the vinyl was surprisingly stretchy once I had warmed it up with a hairdryer and probably took about an hour including photos and refitting.  Thanks to Mrs icenutter for the loan of the hairdryer!

The one on the right was the second one (which I did a better job on :star:)

Nice job - I may have done the weave in mirror myself though.

I found my badge much easier to do with it warm too, hairdryer is a good tip  :happy2:

Not that bad, I just took my time.  If you have ever wallpapered then its just the same!

Yea, I'm still not sure what is best.  The OCD in me wants them both at the same angle, but the artist wants them as mirror images.

Nice Job thinking of doing this with mine but I have the mk6 gtd wheel and the buttons and badge have quite abit of detail in them?

Has that hairdryer got a brake light???

Mr M no they dont, you need to take the airbag off and then there is 2 20mm torqs holding them in.

Have you considered doing the bottom insert, but leaving the small rectangular bit where the GTI badge is alone?

Do these inserts just unclip off?? Don't want to tug on them and damage them!

....Fiddly, but with a hairdryer, surgical scalpel, and the latest carbon vinyl which is improved, it should be do-able.

it just pulls off - Be firm but gentle (she said).

Yes, just pull them firmly and slowly from the top.  They fit into soft rubber so if you are too cack handed you wil tear the rubber.

No, it's not OSIR - It was someone making them in America (can't think of the name right now except that he was called Charles). I arranged a Group Buy of some real carbon Mk5 front grill and boot lock badges and he decided to thank me for the business I introduced.

Is the OSIR DSG surround a "stick on" part or do you need to remove any cockpit parts, then replace with the surround? :happy2:

I'm assuming you have to remove the airbag to get the bits out? Thats the bit that worries me as never done that and don't have VCDS if I end up with an error.

Yes airbag off for the MFSW buttons, but not for blank ones.

I didn't get any faults that needing clearing with VCDS after removing it to fit the cruise last week.

Same again today when i took it off to trim these. All i did get was a steering wheel light, all needed for that was go left lock and hold, centre, right lock and hold. Release, and it went out.

cheers

You can't laquer it mate. Gets rid of the whole effect it just fills the gaps and smooths it right out :(

The latest vinyl carbons are pretty good and I don't think need varnishing. I did my Recaro backs in carbon vinyl:

Iv not experienced lacquering 3m di-nic myself either, but that is what iv seen/heard on various forums.

Since doing mine, iv now got a button that doesn't work!!  :sad1: Took it out again this morning and reassembled it carefully, but still nothing. I have no idea what i could have done to stop that from working! Its on the 'star' button, but going to get very annoying :(

I've seen some chrome ones which were likely aftermarket and only on the non MFSW.

^^^^ Try using 3M or the 3M Di-Noc. Can be bought from eBay in any size you want. Take your time, don't stretch it too much or overheat it and it will be fine. I use the wifey's hair dryer instead of a heat gun and it works a treat.

I have not laqured mine. Didnt see the need. Although i have seen some interior work on other mk5's that were laqured. Looked the business
