Any recommendations for alloy wheel refurbishment and possible colour change in Hampshire. Have looked at The wheel specialists and My Alloys in Basingstoke.
Don't mind traveling, with in reason :)

My Alloys are good, we've used them a few times :happy2:

If you go with The Wheel Specialist they will want to cover the face that mates with the hub and also the radius bolt faces with powder coating. This is not good practice and is only done by them so that they can offer their guarantee against corrosion. This relies on them applying an all enveloping coat to your wheel. Either find somebody who doesn't do this or request that they leave these surfaces bare. If they leave them bare they will probably have you waive the guarantee.
I can say all of the above based on firsthand experience with the Fareham branch.
Have a read of this: http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,69080.msg749559.html#msg749559 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,69080.msg749559.html#msg749559)

I have used MyAlloys, the ex used TWS and I have also used Silver Wheels Ltd before
Both MyAlloys and Silver Wheels were good. Marcus at Silver Wheels is actually a really nice down to earth bloke.
My Alloys were OK but they have expanded lately and lost the personal touch. Receptionist is stupid and I've had some pretty shocking jobs.
TWS are HIDEOUSLY expensive.

Also Following....need mine doing in Hampshire, I have also dropped you a PM :)

If you're willing to travel to Horley, www.thewheeldoctor.biz (run by a guy called Nigel and his wife) is excellent and good prices too. Refurbed a set 19" split rims for me, including taking them apart, full strip down, and powder coat finish for £100 per wheel. For comparison, Lepsons (who are also excellent) wanted £164/corner
He's on holiday this week...waiting for him to get back so he can refurb my monzas!

Platinum alloys in Swindon did an epic job on my rare Regamasters.
Couldn't recommend them enough.......
-
MyAlloys basingstoke, really impressed with them

Tell me about it. Over £100 a corner for one piece rims with no colour change

The wheel specialist is the best. Not cheapest but if you care about your wheels you won't mind. 100% recommend Fareham branch.

I'm all for paying for what you get but that's a ridiculous price.

There are others that know more about wheels and correct finishing techniques that have been doing it for longer without being a franchise.
TWS have a very successful global image developed by good marketing of the franchise opportunities.
It's also worth noting that the Fareham branch at least have a very high staff attrition rate.
I have also witnessed one of their staff dropping one of my wheels onto the caliper as he removed it. He had to do this because the spigot aperture had been powder coated and had become firmly stuck on the hub. He took all of the wheel bolts out rather than leaving two in to stop the wheel falling off when he hit the back of the wheel. TWS accepted that they had 'training issues'.
These surfaces including hub face and bolt seats should not be powder coated. Have you read my earlier post in this thread with a link to another older thread?
Paying good money does not necessarily ensure quality. One of the things with this kind of work is that the change is so dramatic that the customer is usually very impressed as a result of this and then becomes happy to pay. As far as a standard finish is concerned with the right equipment it's not particularly labour intensive and a good finish can be very quick to achieve.
I'd also suggest basing an opinion on a company based on how they deal with a complaint rather than on a success, or at least be open minded enough to consider this. Then you will have revealed a true measure of the integrity of the trader and their regard for the customer. Too many people wax lyrical about traders/dealers etc when they've had no reason to rely on customer care or experience the need for decent after sales service. TWS have a massive customer base both privately and commercially and have marketed very successfully. They do not care if they lose a handful of customers.
