I'm in the process of planning an audio upgrade, and one thing I'm struggling to find info on is the options for aftermarket rear speakers.
I know Gladen do a 3 way kit for the front with an 8" woofer, plug and play with the oem speaker loom etc, which sounds like a decent option, but what about the rear...? Is there even much benefit to upgrading them? (I know a lot of supposed audiophiles claim the soundstage shouldn't be behind you..)
Any pointers?
-
Gladen are amazing, it's up to you whether you use rear speakers, as long as it's all in phase

Yeah I'm looking at maybe an active sub as an alternative.
The plan was to go for an RCD510, but the more I read the more I hear about crap eq, bass roll-off at volume etc. As much as it'd look nice and oem I'm starting to think an aftermarket hu is what I need to do the speakers justice.
-
You could just put woofers in the rear.
Have a look at this http://www.talkaudio.co.uk/ipb/index.php/topic/374847-teamspb-mkv-r32-build-hr-ultra-lows-19s-sq-biased-install/?hl=%2Bgladen+%2Br32#entry4367406
I have upgraded the front speakers it sounds great with an RNS510 but my sub sounds off as its right in the back of the car. I will be adding just woofers to the rear when i get some cash.
If you are upgrading the front speakers you should deaden the doors.

Cheers dazza. I'm actually looking at a Pioneer sub that fits under the passenger seat. It's the ts-wx110a I think. It's active, so quite convenient for a simple budget install.
I'm not arsed about amping up the speakers, but.. does the RCD510 have enough power to do a set of Gladens justice? Think the RCD510 is 4x20w?
Doesn't sound much.
I've had luck in the past powering 8" comps from an Alpine hu - but that was 4x50w.
Hmmm... I'm unsure about the hu. And I can't find an oem-looking aftermarket one for sensible money.
The RCD510 DAB can be had for less than £200.. but is it worth it..??
-
I think it would be rude not to amp up the Gladens.
I have a side mount sub box. You can have it for £45 delivered if you want (i'm in Spain so wont make much after shipping) i paid £75 currently being sold on ebay for £59.99.

No point amping up a crap signal. If you want to get the best from your audio change the head unit to an aftermarket one. Plenty of good ones out there.
You don't really notice audio in the rear. For 2 weeks my rears weren't even working and truth be told I didn't notice it until I realised some amp cables weren't plugged in..oops.
So you'd want to buy a 3 way component set for the front (if you have 3 speakers in the front doors already) or otherwise just buy 2 normal component sets.
I have tweeter and 16.5inch front and back in the rocco and it sounds amazing.
in the golf i went from 3 per door front to 2 per door because the Hertz eskl163s didn't fit in the mid position. Audio still improved. Won't notice the mid loss.
In the GTI my mate made me up a tiny flush fit enclosure (because the ones that go into the boot space look w*nk imo) and a Rockford Fosgate shallow mount r2sd4 sub.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net%2Fhphotos-ak-frc3%2Ft31%2F1499405_265634866938520_654587931_o.jpg&hash=402fdcbfa721d7a193f17432ece4c6d3313dbfc2)
Could have done with more sub box space but it sounded pretty good and would still give lots of bass just didn't need it turned all the way up.
Rocco has a 12 inch Pheonix Audio shallow mount which punches pretty well and with the hertz audio all round sounds very good, everyone who gets in likes the audio
have a small problem with clipping at high volumes but the old-ish unknown 4ch hertz amp is probably to blame for that...

Yeah I'm pretty much at the conclusion that an aftermarket hu is the way to go.
Had a single din alpine in my mk4 with 8" components in the front and I built an mdf shelf with some QB 6x9s (yes I know the old 6x9 parcel shelf thing is frowned upon these days), no amp, and it was a HUGE improvement over stock. I didn't want for much more actually.
The whole setup was quite cheap, and did what I wanted.
Maybe I need to decide a budget and go from there with the mk5.
As much as your setup looks good Jay, I get the feeling it'd be out of my budget, with the amp, false floor etc. I dunno, maybe not.
Could do with finding a good installer near me for a good chat. Anyone recommended around Notts/South Yorks?
Oh and Jay can you recommend any head units that are oem-looking, maybe dab, good sq? Not fussed about nav, bluetooth, phone etc. Something that works really well with a 4th gen ipod nano would be ideal!
Cheers

I'll bear that in mind mate, ta for the offer.
Still very much in the planning stage so if a boot sub comes into the equation I'll give you a shout.

My setup was very cheap. My mate made the sub enclosure. Paid him £60. Sub itself was £85 or something. False floor was all for the air ride and stuff, you don't need something like that.
Amp was just a cheapy MTX Terminator, something like £100. You need an emp to run the sub anyway. A mono amp is very cheap.
If you want to get the most out of the aftermarket speakers then you should look at amping the door speakers as well. I paid £80 for a Hertz 4 ch used amp, not the best but it's OK.
If you do a lot of the work yourself then you'll save money. it's not hard to cut out a false floor really :)
No HU recommendations from me only like what I have used, I'd go for a Pioneer AVH unit, no DAB on that but you can get some higher models that have DAB I think.
The setup on my rocco was a bit more, i didn't pay for jairm to do my false floor as I gave him my evoms intake when I split my GTI (let's say I paid him £200 for arguments sake).
the 12 inch pheonix sub was free as swap for my Rockford Fosgate.
I paid for the wood and sh*te, so about £30 for the wood and materials.
Associated screws etc
2 way Hertz ESKL163 setup would be like £200
I have DSK163 in the back, which were a lot cheaper, around £80 , do want to put ESK in the back later tho.
The 4ch hertz amp was 80 quid as said before
the amp i moved over from the golf (£100)
my kenwood satnav headunit was £300
so that's about £1000 with new sat-nav garmin head unit, all new high end speakers and amps, not too bad!

Very comprehensive info there, much appreciated.
I'm not in a mega-rush to upgrade (may even just plug an ipod kit into the rcd300 to tide me over) so I'll do a good bit of research and then hopefully do the job properly.
That's a great starting point for me, thanks again

TeamSPB sell a quad lock loom converter for 2 or 4 channel amps.
I've orders the Gladen 3 way front speakers and may amp them up at some stage, as well as adding some uprated rear speakers.

Which ones did you order? Let us know how you get on

Keep us updated with this mate, it'll be good research for me! It does sound like a quality set. Should have some nice depth with the 8".

I've ordered mine from Germaniks. Cheapest online for the setup. I will self install the speakers and then may take it to TeamSPB for an amp setup at a later date.

Can't find the 3 way set listed on that site - how much did you pay, if you don't mind me asking?

I am also looking to upgrade my front speakers (currently have the 10 speaker system with 3 ways in the front). Is it simply a case of removing the VW ones and replacing with aftermarket speakers of the same size? Does any wiring have to be changed, and are there any adapters needed at the headunit? (I have an RNS 510). Thanks.

The Gladen setup is plug and play. If you go other aftermarket systems, you are going to have to cut and chop speaker wires.

I have some Rainbows was going to try them without an amp to start with just in place of the VW speakers, but I think they need an amp after looking at the instructions!

The decent speaker setups will need some cutting as the OEM wires will route to a crossover unit. From there you will need to wire from the outputs to the speaker.

Very true, I have the added problem of having 2 crossovers per door, not sure if there is enough space inside the door card to fit!

I managed to fit my Hertz ESKL 163 crossovers behind the doorcard.
The Hertz ones are massive. You should be fine .

Amp goes in the boot :) but come up with any solution. As all depends on what amp youre using and how big it is etc. .

Considering the DLS A7 but it's very big so yes would have to go in the boot!

Remind me what you're running them off again, hu/amp?
How you finding the 8s? They should create a nice bit of mid-bass.

You will get a huge improvement in quality changing from the RNS/RCD to an aftermarket unit like a Pioneer or something :-)
-
Agree. But I want to keep my RNS and I'll possibly look at the Gladen quad lock amp kit and a Mosconi 2 channel at some point. :happy2:

Those 8" Gladen 3-ways look to be exactly what I've been looking for
I can't see the One Line 200 Extremes on the Germaniks site though.

Just accept you will get a huge jump in quality (even when amped) with a better head unit. :)

Yes. Came with crossovers. You just ignore everything that's currently there apart from the 3/4 pin connector by the existing woofer. And feed from that into the crossovers which provide to the woofer, mids and tweeters.

Ok cheers may order these myself as it sounds quite straightforward to install!
-
It's a pain to install. Have a heat gun or hairdryer at the ready to remove old lugs holding tweeters and other bits in. And also need to drill out the rivets for the old woofers and come up with your own mounting solution for the spacers as nothing is provided. Also nothing to mount the crossovers. Mine are just cable tied to the existing looms.
-
Oh ok, just thought it would be easier than the Rainbows I have as the Gladen speakers are the exact same size as the VW ones so thought they would be easier to fit...at least the door card should go back on easily enough!

Are the mid-bass attached to the plastic mounting spacer, or could they be replaced with plywood baffles?
-
i am also interested in the gladen one kit it looks a good piece of kit :happy2:
would be good to see if we can get a group buy going to save a few pennies
-
You need the spacer. It's a much deeper woofer, would foul on the window regulator mech if not attached to spacer.

I understand, but is the plastic spacer fully bonded to the speaker basket? Or could you easily remove it and make something out of wood instead?
-
They are separate pieces. You attach the spacer to the door and then the speaker to the spacer.
-
Use the Connects2 speaker surrounds. Although they fit sh*te and you'll need to trim it down.

My Rainbow speakers are 165mm, 100mm and 26mm. Do you think these would fit ok?
