Hi I currently have a mk5 gti manual normal edition.
However an auto is needed due to other family members needs and I wanted to ask which of the above two would be a gd option?
we do around 12k to 15k a year nd motorways on the weekend. I dont know what would work out cheaper the ed 30 petrol or the diesel 330d. I believe the edition 30s are around the 9k mark and 330d aaround the 8k mark with mileages of 70k. My current gti is 08 with 78k on the clock and im guessing is worth around 7k so I dont want to put too much cash on top. I heard the edition dsg isnt that reliable im guessing the 330d has a better gearbox and possibly will last longer? As it being a diesel and all.
Give me your opinions.

My garage (JKM in Portsmouth) tell me they've repaired more manual gearboxes than DSG's.
Some love them, some don't.
These two cars are like comparing apples with oranges tbh.
There'd be more of an even debate if you were asking after a GT TDI DSG vs ED30 DSG.
If you want one of the worlds best auto boxes buy a Mercedes.
Can't help more than this I'm afraid, these two cars are so different.

For that mileage I wouldn't consider a diesel.

I'd say the difference in running costs between the two is marginal. Now it's just down to personal preference. Considering the forum you're on most people would probably suggest ed30 but we're biased.
Best thing to do is go for a drive in both, you're probably used to the GTI driving and you'll prefer the added power of the ed30 but as a passenger I think the 330d is more comfortable.

Bmw auto boxes ain't very good

330d has a lot of grunt where the ED30 doesn't (e.g. below 3000rpm) so I would try both and see which you prefer. Bear in mind mapped ED30s feel totally different to a standard one, and struggle badly for traction.

My dad has a 330d se and it's an absolute rocket ship. So smooth and wafty but tickle the throttle and it just flies. The auto box although only a single clutch jobbie is just as smooth as my DSG if not smoother. He and my brother in law drove from here to Italy, around the Mille millia and back (3000 miles) last year and with spirited driving start to finish averaged 44mpg!!
The only things I would say about it are that it is hugely uncomfortable with 3 people in the back. All of my family would rather do 10 miles in the back of my 3 door gti than the back of the 330d. And in se form (non-m sport) the front seats are very flat.
I would take the edition 30 probably but if I wanted economy the 330d would be top of my list. If in m sport trim that is

I think this is generally correct, but I would add that if you dig deep enough and have an LSD fitted and get the right suspension/geometry fitted and set up you won't find the car half as problematic as you might imagine for traction. In any a FWD vehicle with 300+bhp you need to accept that a degree of finesse is required, but not so much that the mods feel pointless if they're done right...which isn't cheap.
Even lighter wheels and brakes with the right tyres will help with buttoning down the handling and power delivery.

I think if you don't want to modify it then the 330d will be quicker all day long. And if you say, put X, Y and Z on the edition and it will be better, then what if we did the same to the Beamer?
Also if you get nav, it's 100% better in the Beamer. Not to mention how much more refined and comfortable it is nearly all of the time.

Edition 30 for me all day long :driver:

That would be a race I would be very interested to see. That said I've not been in an edition, let alone a mapped one.
