Hi all
Been suffering from some judder plus engine light flashing when putting my foot down. Fault was cylinder 2 misfire.
Changed all 4 coil packs for brand new ones and thought the fault went but it happened again today :fighting:
Any ideas? Could it be injectors?
-
I had a very similar experience mate, I installed new coil packs and had to renew the plugs the day after
-
Injectors normally only misfire at idle speeds when the rail pressure is at it's lowest. A lack of spark shows up as a miss under heavy load, usually in the midrange. So sounds spark related from your description. Plugs next as /\ said.
If you still get a misfire, monitor which cyl with VCDS, then replace that injector. Well, may as well do all 4 whilst you're there as it's a faff of a job.

Thanks both for the input - plugs were changed in Feb at VW service. Could they need changing already?
-
No way, they last for ages. Might be worth checking them for oil fouling though, just in case.
Any other fault codes come up on the scan?

I went for NGK iridiums after going stage 2 in May and they had only covered around 500 miles in about 2 months before I had to change them. Not everything is created equally so its sometimes seems like luck of the draw for lifespan/reliability give them a close inspection for hairline cracks

@Pudding (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=10733) I think I'll pull them out and have a look just incase. I've read some stories people have issues with certain types of plugs in their cars and don't recommend certain brands.
@hlcst (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11306) car is stock no performance mods but if the plugs have gone I'm sure I could take it back to VW and tell them to replace them under their service parts warranty?
-
@Pudding (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=10733) @hlcst (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11306) so changed the plugs and coil packs and thought issue was gone until today judder came again. I can only assume the only thing left now is the injector to be replaced?
-
Bump - EML now on permenently :fighting:
-
Is it still showing a misfire on cylinder 2?
-
@hlcst (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11306) yeah plugged it in today misfire cylinder 2 and random multiple misfires
-
What coil packs and plugs did you end up going for and did you keep your old ones?
-
Kept the old coil packs but not spark plugs. Coil packs were from euro car parts and spark plugs were Bosch double platinum
-
Before you go down the injector route clear the fault codes and check all your connections and make sure the wiring looks to be in good health, then if that seems to be fine swap around your current coil packs and then see if the misfire moves to a different cylinder, if it does try one of your old coil packs. If nothing changes try it with your spark plugs. By doing these steps you will be eliminating either a coil pack or spark plug issue
One thing I noticed on mine when I had the issues was when I swapped the plugs it worked a treat but as soon as the car got up to temp the misfire returned so make sure to take it on a fairly spirited drive.
-
Thanks for the advice @hlcst (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11306) I'll give that a try. What was your issue in the end?
Is it an indication that on my daily commute to work im getting bad mpg? I roughly get 18mpg on my way to work and return aswell which is a 6 mile trip of city driving and dual carriage way for about 2 miles?
Absolutely hate it when it happens! Love the car to bits which is the only thing stopping me giving it up
-
My cylinder 2 coil pack was shot and the others started to fail at temp, which made for an interesting drive to eurocarparts, so I changed all 4 to Bosch and had no issues for the drive to and from work. The next day the misfire was back but only at temp so swapped the plugs around and the misfire moved to cylinder 4. It turned out that my car and the nearly new ngk iridiums did not like each other so I now use ngk pfr7 double platinum and have had no issues for 2k of enjoyable driving

I think I'll get it booked into mechanics to see if I can get a definite answer saves messing about the judder is really getting on my nerves now!
-
Just a thought incase anyone can confirm - this won't be happening coz of my diverted valve could it? For example if one of the bolts is loose or something? Thanks
-
Mechanics found a peice of metal inside where the injector was and reckoned this was causing the misfire but no idea where it could have come from?
Told him to replace the injector anyway and well see how it goes. Should be ready tomorrow fingers crossed!
-
Shoayb don't give up on the old girl - once back from the garage and she drives normal, you'll have forgotten all this.
Fingers crossed it's nothing major and hasn't caused any other damage.
Good luck tomorrow and let us know the outcome.
Let me know next time you're in Notts with your Golf - we'll have a catch up.
-
@rashg60 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11930) thanks for the encouragement mate - just really frustrating when things go wrong. Hopefully it all goes well tomorrow and I get it back running smooth again.
Noticed you went for a new exhaust - what did you end up going for? Is it sounding boy racerish?
-
Went for the BCS Powervalve one in the end - quiet when you need it to be (i.e. normal driving - city or motorway), plant your right foot down and the valve opens up and makes a wonderful noise. Not boy-racer-ish but sounds just right (burbles and pops). It has the power to go with it, so it doesn't sound daft either.
I am now running at Stage 2 R-Tech remap, pushing 273bhp and 344 lb/ft torque. Most of the power is in the midrange, where it's actually required most.
Like I said, let me know next time you're up in Notts and I'll take you for a (sophisticated) blast.......
-
Cars back and running smoothly now with no judders!
Thanks for your help @hlcst (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11306) and patience with my stupid questions!
