Title: Gti Smallest rim size
Post by: zub-gti on December 26, 2009, 09:46:10 pm

Hello,

I am looking to put a set of snow tires on my GTi and wondering what the smallest size of rims I could fit over the brakes.

I would ideally like to put something like this on :http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GOLF-MK5-ALLOY-WHEELS_W0QQitemZ220528315104QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item3358830ae0

But I am unsure if these will slip of the brakes???

Thanks for your help,

Z

I think you can go down to 16" and still clear the calipers.

^quite a few use 16s with 205 tyres for winter.

Just to revive this thread, can anyone confirm that 16's would 100% fit over the GTi brakes?

....That's a good call  :happy2: - Polo GTI 'Monza' style?

Or whether GTI Monza 17's fit the 'Mk5' Polo? [Am trying to sell mine]

Polos from 2002 to 2009 were all 5x100 unfortunately.

Definately, infact in the manual there is some blurb about using 205/55r16 tyres to use snowchanins (and not using normal chains on 17" and 18").

....

I thought that snow chains were now illegal in the UK - I could be wrong.

Snow Socks are a better alternative for our cars. Chain damage to alloys etc.

Yes I thought Polo GTI mini Monzas in 16" with winter tyres would be a good option - alas it seems the they dont fit? Which is a real shame.

RE: The law and chains - I'd have to check as I dont know. But everyone round my way (clearly a lot of skiers in my bit of Woking) has been running around in chains over the last two weeks...

^^^^
Re the chains: Then I must be wrong.

I think that chains would both annihilate my OZ alloys and rip up my wheel arches. My solution is to stay indoors or buy a new Land-Rover Defender shorty - I saw one yesterday and would love it. Would have to be red (with carbon cosmetics).

Or get some winter tyres, then you can do it all!

Except go off road...
