Title: Is there a snake in my car!? Hissing :-)
Post by: Matt81 on October 23, 2015, 09:31:15 am
Hi guys,

Sorry for "slightly" misleading topic.

My ed30 has a hiss coming from the speakers.  The only way to stop the hissing is to press and hold the brake pedal.
I was going to take it to a local ICE specialist but they wanted £40 just to take a look, not fix.

If it's any help my head unit is the Kenwood DNX520VBT, however if I turn the unit of by holding SRC I still get the hissing.

The hissing is really starting to get on my nerves!

Any help, suggestions greatly appreciated.

Better yet, if your in the Leicestershire area I can pay beer tokens for your time.

Cheers.

Alternatively - are there many ICE places that work on a no fix no fee basis?

I ahve the same, dont worry its not an anaconda!
WHen you got your kenwood did you get an adapter or was it manually wired up?

I think mine is a bad ground. When I hit the loud pedal, the sound of the hissing gets high pitched.

It's literally got its wires crossed(pun intended)

That is a leaking brake servo and not the stereo.  Common problem and a complete pain in the arse to change.

Servo is about £180 from VW and yeah, you need to move the engine around to replace it. So that's downpipe off, dogbone off and driver's side mount off. Plus disconnecting the Master cylinder and bleeding it again afterwards etc etc.  Probably getting on for a £500 job plus parts I reckon, hence why most people live with it.

The air leak is so small it only causes a ~ 2% fuel trim in the long term adaptation measuring block, and the servo line has a 1 way valve in it, so no boost leaks.

It's more of an irritation than a major problem.

Im Confused... If its coming from the speakers how would it be the brake servo? if it is definitely coming from the speakers it's most likely a bad earth.

saying that... I'm an electrician not a mechanic though, so i cant verify if the brakes are connected to the sounds system

Well I never expected a response that required £500 worth of repairs.  I'd rather have the snake.   :-O

The unit was fitted when the previous owner had it so unsure of the wiring.

The noise comes from the footwell, so could appear to be coming from a speaker.  The fact the noise goes when pressing the brake pedal suggests it's the servo.  I can't think of any stereos that are connected to the brake pedal in any way :)

I take it the noise was originally noticed at idle with the engine running and the stereo on quietly?

Yes - noticed at idle.  Going to pop outside and have a listen to check where its coming from.

Booooo!  I'd live with it personally.  Mine's been doing it for a year and I just learned to ignore it.  I bought the servo etc when I was up for changing it out, but after researching what needs doing....yeah.....fook that!

I suppose it boils down to: £500 to get rid of the Adder under the dash, or £500 on a posh stereo (to drown out said snake) ;)

Years ago when I was OCD about cars I would have lived on bread and water for a week to fix it, but now it's just not worth that kind of loot to fix a very minor issue :)

I've had a few older cars (Polo G40, mk3 Vr6) that had issues will earthing and that noise does get annoying after a while, knowing its something to do with the brakes would have me a little on edge though!
