Hello, recently brought a VW golf mk5 GTI 2005 55 plate!
Engine rattles very loud on tick over (sounds tappety)
Cars done 113500 miles
And has full service history!
Anyone could help me, much appreciated thanks Joe!!

Do a search mate, these cars are tappety. Plenty of youtube videos etc, and compare the sound to your own to see if yours sounds excessive

True, the GTI sounds slightly louder than a non direct-injected petrol engine, but a severe rattle on tickover is most likely pointing to your cam chain and/or tensioner needing replaced.. it's a common problem, particularly on early GTI's.
Do a search for 'cam chain' or 'chain rattle' and you should find plenty info :happy2:

Before you jump to the cam chain/tensioner - it could just be the injectors, which is normal. They are noisy engines

The car actually has a belt, so it can't be that! I've been told it's the oil tappets!? Could that be that or not!?
Thanks for all your replys!

Yes they have a cambelt , but they also have a chain the other end which joins the two camshafts together .
Over time the chain becomes slack which leads to the engine sounding like a diesel.
Loads of threads on this try a search .
But like said the engine is very tappety by nature.
