Title: Windscreen wash issue
Post by: FJ1000 on October 31, 2015, 09:10:27 pm
Hi guys, need some advice on how to proceed here...

My windscreen wash doesn't spray at all, and I hear no sound of a washer pump when I attempt to spray. Checked the obvious stuff:

- Washer bottle is full
- The nozzles aren't blocked (took them off and could blow air through)
- Fluid lines aren't blocked either (attached a foot pump to the washer end and could get the washer bottle bubbling - air getting through the lines)
- Fuse not blown
- I can't see any fluid leaking anywhere

I'm wondering if the pump is knackered - how would I check that?

Thanks

Sounds like the pump is buggered. If you can remove the pump put a piece of wire on each terminal of the pump and then onto  the +&- of a battery and you should feel if the motor spins. If not it will be that which is the  problem hope this helps

As the last poster advised would be the quick way but if that doesn't give results you could try below.

If you've got access to VCDS you could perform :-

Output test on the pump that would test just that.

Switch could be tested in measuring blocks.

If you've not got access check for someone local:-http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,88875.0.html

Alternatively get underneath the drivers side front and test the pump connections for an electrical feed since the fuse test out ok.
Then check the pump motor with you multimeter for continuity.

I thought this as well after I posted but was just trying to put it into words so cheers

I'm sure the original poster will be happy with your advice as its probably the route I would go but I have leads as you described for that type of work with a low value rated fuse built in.

Thanks very much for the replies guys.

I did some more reading on the forum and stumbled across a post where somebody mentioned that they had a similar issue, but also the 12v cigarette lighter sockets and the rear wiper weren't working, which all come off the same relay which was faulty. I just then remembered that the only time I've tried to use the cig lighter socket, my phone didn't charge, but I assumed it was a dodgy charger. Tried my rear wiper, and guess what, that doesn't work either!

I have ordered a replacement "460" relay off ebay. Hopefully that will do the trick, otherwise I'll get checking the pump as suggested.

There are two relays that need to operate for washer or rear wiper to work on the mk5. Not sure why a relay would stop the cigarette lighter socket working tho... Have you done a multimeter test on the wiper or the washer pump yet?

Just so you know you should be getting these readings on either the washer motor connector or on wires 2 and 3 of the rear wiper connector (same feed).

Rear wiper off - cable 1 12v. - cable 2 12v
Rear wiper on - cable 1 ground.  - cable 2 Ground
Washer held on to spray front - cable 1 12v.  -cable 2 ground
Washer held on to spray rear - cable 1 ground.  - cable 2 12v

If you are getting these readings both relays are fine. The relays are fused by a fuse in the cabin fuse board. I forget the number but there is a row with only two fuses in, both 15amps, it is one of those.

This is for a GT TDi which has identical syptoms to my car

http://forums.ross-tech.com/showthread.php?2085-J519-Dual-pump-washer-and-rear-wiper-(GT-Tdi-Mk5)-not-working

It mentions the load reduction relay J59. Although I suspect you mean the J729 and J730a relays?

http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?2868016-Complete-Fuse-and-Relay-assignments-for-the-2006-2007-GTI

Might have to get myself a multimeter if swapping the J59 relay doesn't work!

Swapped the J59 relay last night (bit awkward to get to) and my windscreen wash and rear wiper are alive again! :-)

£10 for the relay off eBay.

Cig lighter socket still appears dead, need to check fuses again I think.

Thought I'd update this thread in case someone else has the same issue.

I've just ordered the relay for my GTI. Could you tell me please where you found the relay circuit? According to this page (http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?2868016-Complete-Fuse-and-Relay-assignments-for-the-2006-2007-GTI (http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?2868016-Complete-Fuse-and-Relay-assignments-for-the-2006-2007-GTI)) it's under the instrument panel to the left. If that's the case no wonder it was a nightmare! Thanks for the help

Did you ever get to solve the 12v socket issue?
