What would you recommend to keep my exhaust tips looking clean?
-
No real remedy besides cleaning every week and using autosol or similar to keep the finish good
-
I just meant what products people use to clean them should have made it more clear!
-
I usually use whatever wheel cleaner I'm using to clean the as above autosol !
-
Britemax final shine is good as a maintanace cleaner. Won't mark the metal over time like some of the harsher polishes and leaves some layer of protection behind also.
-
I replaced my tips with stainless tubing and a little bit of JB WELD. Kept clean with 0000 wire wool lasts forever (almost)

Hiya. Do you have any pics of your new tips?

sorry for stealing, but do someone know what wax etc. can i seal my Milltek tips for winter? any ideas?
-
Autosol and 0000 grade wire wool.
-
Meguiars All Metal Polish
-
Mothers metal polish, as I fund autosol to be a bit heavy on the metal but it's still a great product.

Autosol and elbow grease. I find the trick is little and often don't let it build up.
-
Add WD-40 before. Loosens up the carbon build up.

auto finesse exhaust polish & poor boys wheel sealant has worked well on my scorpion tips

Do you find sealing them makes much difference? I wire wool and autosol mine but they're filthy again after a couple of days!
-
I've used Autosol but unfortunately the tips have rusted and bubbled.
-
I think once the standard tips have gone past a certain point they're almost impossible to rescue.
I use Autosol on my Powervalve and it works a treat. Just a case of staying on top of it and not letting the elements take hold.
-
Just get some A4 exhaust tips off ebay, thats what I did :happy2: I use Autosol to keep them nice and shiny now.

You have a new system AJP so it'll be okay as long as you keep on top of it where as the previous owners of my golf probably didn't give a hoot about the tips. would like to change them but have to cut the old one off

How did you mount them on mate?.

True. It was one of the reasons that made me bite the bullet and go for a new system, they just looked untidy and let the car down.
I did consider the A4 tips like those above. But then I asked Nige if he'd do another group buy and the rest is history!
I reckon there's a few options to tidy things up on a budget. The push-on tips being one, and I'm sure it wouldn't be a big job to lop off the rusty ones and weld on some shiny new ones. I'd prefer the cut and weld approach myself, you'd probably be able to get a better fit against the valance.

I was actually thinking of going 80mm and getting as close to the valance as possible but not enough to knock and rattle.
-
Yep, a nice close fit would be what I'd be going for. I'm a bit ocd with things like that. One downside to the A4 push-on tips (as much as they're still a big improvement over rusty ones) is that they will protrude further than the standard tips.
-
If they were 80mm then I'd say it looks fine but from what I can see from the above picture of jayha11 gti they don't look too good poking out like that as there's a massive gap all around the valance.
-
Autosol and a fine wire brush to clear what carbon I can. I'm sure there must be a better method!
-
If you keep on top of it, then the build-up comes off easily with normal car body polish. I give mine a 10 second wipe with a bit of autoglym when cleaning the car and they come up looking like new every time
