Was coming home from work and oil pressure light came on saying stop etc so I stopped as soon as I can and switched it off and checked my booklet and it said it could be low oil so I started it back up and drove to the nearest garage which was about 40 seconds away, parked up switched it off, topped up with oil, started it up was fine, started driving again and it came on again along with engine management light and it sounded really rough and tappy, any ideas what it can be?

Oil pickup blocked and/or oil pump failure along with what sounds like pretty serious engine damage

So it's pretty much gone then?

Is there any preventative measure for this?
Seem to hear about it a bit too often.

Drop the sump and replace the pick up pipe

you need to scan the car to find why its kicked up the management light i would defo do that before you drop the sump

I put my handheld tool on it last night and this morning and it's coming up with no codes what so ever?

what hand held tool are you using ?
you might need vcds to read it properly as if you have a managment light you should defo have a code

It's only a Ebay one, it's getting booked in today as I still have some warranty left so I should be covered

Got phone call from garage, the oil pump has gone and it's been like it for a while and by all accounts it's never been changed so it's starved my engine of oil and has also messed the internals up, I'm not a happy chap

They said I can have another engine or I can have my money back, I think I'm going to take my money, I don't want it going again

 good luck with that
how much did you pay for your gti ?
-
If your not thinking of getting another golf what about a focus st? Vxr are nice and all but its a Vauxhall and my mate has had 2 vxrs both with problems to the gearbox. The st is a nicer car in my opinion inside and also nicer to drive. Other than that I do like the vxr :happy2: I'm sure you'll enjoy whatever you get. :driver:

Not a fan of fords to be honest, I had a fiesta st and it was the worst car I've ever owned, if the engine isn't to bad on the gti I'll keep it but if it's completely gone I'll get my money back and get a vxr

Spoke to the garage last night the golfs coming back all safe and sound.
They said the tensioner on the oil pump etc had gone causing the light to come on and the rattle was the chain.
Glad it's nothing major will be glad to get her back
-
And what about the damage already done due to oil starvation?
-
As above. I would be concerned about starvation issues to the head and turbo etc
-
They said there was no oil starvation, if it's not right when it comes back and goes again then I will flip out

Think about it logically.... the oil pressure warning light was on, which means there was (next to) no oil pressure which is oil starvation. Obviously the garage will do the bare minimum/cheapest option every time. Bang a new part in it and send it out, hope it doesn't come back.
The way 99% of garages operate unfortunately

I had this issue on GTI. New Oil Pump and New Chain and I'm currently driving the car. Its spot on.
However when the engine light came on I switched engine off instantly
