Early next year will have to change the cam/timing belt. Never done this on a car before....
How much am I looking at total cost including part and labour? Some people have told me £800, others have said alot less than that. I most certainly won't be taking it to a VW garage, probably just a bog standard garage.
I know it'll vary on location, but any suggestions are welcome.

Around £350 to £400 inc water pump.
-
For info VW normally have an offer on where price can be competitive. It all comes down to who you trust working on your car.
-
For the dealers, there may still be a special offer on the Cambelt and Water pump at £350 fitted.
I had mine done a few weeks ago at a local VW Specialist - £320 using vw parts.

From my area £120 labour
Parts are 140

Mine is going in tomorrow to a local VW specialist called Dub Unit. Costing me £330 for the belt and water pump change. Also having the cam follower changed and a full service. Costing £475 all in.
-
Mine was £350 Inc water pump at VW. Local independent quoted a little less, but not by much.
-
Some VW dealers have a special offer of £349 for cambelt and water pump, others including my nearest one charge £449.

How hard is it to do yourself?
Not trying to cut cost of anything as 350 to ensure the life of your engine is a small price to pay.
but out of curiosity. I think we all have the tools to do the job, it may be a case of getting the timing wrong and F-ing it up lol
-
if you need to ask how hard it is then you probably shouldn't do it..

Like I said, im curious
-
you need a proper timing thingy to hold it in place.
I'm pretty mechanically minded (i can change gearboxes etc) but i wouldn't do a cambelt myself.
-
No timing tools for doing the belt on the TFSi.
I find the job straight forward :P
-
You can do my dirty derv one Alex.
-
I wouldn't dare attempt it myself
Thanks for all the replies though, seems it's not as expensive as thought!

@Scoobykiller (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=14018) Where do you source the parts from? Do you have part numbers?
-
Leicester VW did my belt and water pump for £250 they had a offer on in September. Not sure if still on?
-
Anyone know of a VW dealer in the London area who has the special offer price on?
@shail (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=10709) where is your local dealer quoting £350?

Not sure if offer is still on but it was Listers in Leamington Spa.

£430 is what I got it done for last year around North London r-a-c london. VW does it for £500.

Morden (Lookers) VW quoted me £780 yesterday. Unbelievable.
There is a VW offer of £399 at the moment but Lookers said they don't sign up to offers.
Outrageous really.

I rang Morden Lookers yesterday too and they also quoted me £780! Outrageous indeed. However, Motorline Coulsdon quoted me £449.
I rang Inchcape Southend on Sea (I work in Southend couple days a month) and they've got a special price on until the end of December for £349, I've booked my car in for Thursday
