Its that time of year again where i have to choose between a company car or cash allowance, after doing the maths, based on my business mileage i'm going to stick with the cash allowance however i need to replace the golf due to mileage/age.
I could just get another MK6 GTD but after owning 5-6 Golfs i feel like a change.
Based on my budget of £15-£16k i have been looking at:
2013 Mercedes C220 / C250 AMG (White or course!)
2013 Audi A4/A5 S-Line
2012+ Subaru Legacy 2.0 SE Sport
At the moment i am leaning towards the C250 - do we have any Mercedes C Class owners on the forum?
-
Don't get the legacy
-
Don't get the legacy
Took one for a 30 mile test drive and found it okay, nothing more.
After doing a bit of research it seems Subaru build quality isn't what it used to be!
-
Work on them at work and the built quality has got worse in recent years
-
If these are the only options then it has to be the a5 hands down....
VW Golf mk5 1.9tdi 150
-
I would go A5 as well, although I do quite like the C class.
-
Thats the thing, i actually like the look of the W204 in white. I have found one with everything i want including air conditioned leather seats, however i need to sell the Golf first as i don't really want to take out finance.
I'm going to see a A5 tomorrow afternoon, the garage is about 10 minutes from a clients office so i'll pop in on my way back.
-
This what your looking for Anthony? PM me any questions you have , we've been running this for a couple of years, its a nice change from the old
GiT GTi

Exactly. Is yours a C250?
-
Yeah C250 with Pano roof, DAB, Sat Nav
-
Currently looking at a 2013, same spec as yours but with half leather heated and aircondited seats. It's a 7 speed auto (tri-tronic) So has flappy paddles as well :)
-
@Degudodger (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2485) I find the A5's really expensive for what they are, particularly the 3.0 tdi S-Line and Black Edition. I wouldn't buy a 320d but I expect they're far better value than the 2.0 tdi A5. The A4 probably represents best ROI and up-front costs...
The Merc's do nothing for me personally but with an AMG badge...
Is an F30 330d out of reach @Degudodger (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2485)? If they're in, my money would be there. Early 2013 models for around £21k now with very reasonable miles. Faster, a better drive and good real world economy against the others on the plate :happy2:
-
I looked at a couple of 330s but wasn't that impressed. Nothing technically wrong with the drive, just wasn't blown over. In the end I bought a 2012 C220 AMG Sport 125 Tri-tronic Coupe which I pick up tomorrow.

Sounds nice Anthony what colour did you go for
-
Its pretty much like Storm Grey - can't remember what MB call it.

VERY impressed with the spec especially as most of it was missed of the advert. Negotiated two new rear tyres (current ones are on 3mm) tank of diesel and 12 month warranty with unlimited number of claims.
The too negatives:
Alloys have been curbed and cheaply refurbished but its not a massive deal as i'll be changing them next year.
The car was last serviced by a MB Specialist including gearbox fluid change - again not a massive issue but i would have preferred FULL MBSH.

Eccie. Are you on MBclub?
-
Looks nice choice and colour is gorgeous
-
Interior is pretty much immaculate, other than some leather treatment and a wipe round its done. If i'm being critical the exterior needs a DA put over it and dents way to treat some minor bumper scuffs but thats it really.
No plans for it at the moment other than a set of winter wheels :)
-
A5 or AMG imho
:)
-
AMG sport 125 edition

Not sure if i did :ashamed:

Did you ever get the CHs you got from me refurbished?
-
Nice new purchase- congrats, the AMG Sport 125s come pretty well specced. Seriously tempted by a Merc for my next car, not bored of the R yet though...

Hi Deako.
Never got round to it. I'll be putting them back on the classifieds soon, just need to take some photos

Its VERY well specced, however it doesn't have miles to empty which is crazy!

Reverse camera and crunch like that?
Looks a great colour, silver and grey trends well on Mercs.
What's the box like compared to the other makes you test drove? :happy2:

The 7 speed tri-tronic box is actually pretty good, there is still a lag but it's responsive. Looking at retrofitting lane guidance but need to find a decent guide first :)

I'm sure i do. Car is in the garage for a service ATM so will check later this afternoon :)

I sold them on to another forum member, made a bit of a lose but at least they'll get used.

Found it in the end :)

After 1,500 miles / 4 weeks I am starting to regret buying the Merc
Initial thoughts of the C204 were positive, i liked the way it drove if maybe a little sluggish but while i was getting used to the car i overlooked some its flaws.
Performance and handling
- Auto box isn’t that responsive with more lag than I had expected
- MPG is nowhere near what I was hoping to achieve at an average of 42MPG and approximately £30-£40 more a month to fill up.
- The engine is hardly refined and sounds more like skeleton pleasuring himself in a biscuit tin!
- Brakes need upgrading as there are nowhere near as sharpe as the Golf was. Loooooaaaadddssss of brake fade.
Build quality
- Interior – More squeaks than mice in a cheese factory
Entertainment
- Unbelievably bad DAB reception to the point where I have stopped using it.
- Bluetooth integration call menu is needlessly complicated and defaults to sorting by last name/first name
- Command online – Completely pointless
- Maps – cost of updating maps is stupid
-
All not good then..see the merc getting traded back in Anthony
-
Hi Andy. The selling garage has offered me a low ball trade in so I might wait until the new year and list it on autotrader. What's really annoying is how although I'm finding the various iterations of the Golf samey I still find they tick most the boxes for me. IF I come back to the VW fold, It will have to be a MK7 GTD in Candy white, it just so happens my local VW dealer has a couple........
-
Love the gtd and in white is perfect. After driving a few cars at work I still think vw has one of the best dsg box's in its group
-
This is my first auto and I'm not going to lie, it sucks. Hopefully DSG is better!
-
Yeah vw seem to have got the dsg box spot on

:sad1: Sorry you're not feeling full return on your cash Anthony.
IMO all four cylinder diesels sound like a sack of sh*t, especially cold, but a DPF delete can help that and mine is certainly smoother when warm and of course tuned.
The gearbox I can relate to - is it the steering dash column gearbox control that most of the new Mercs seem to have?
I hate this tbh. It's like a 70's American estate from the old movies, just unnatural for the European market IMO. I had an early 2015 C-Class C200 saloon petrol auto earlier this year for the weekend and although the engine was poor anyway, the box didn't help that.
Is it too late to trade for a 330d? I've seen some for £20k with under 40k miles now which represents great value.
I'd be confident that for most people, the six cylinder and ZF Auto with the kit it has (in M Sport trim) would improve on 80%, if not nearly all of the points you've listed above, obviously with personal perception in mind too :happy2:
Hope you're not tied in too much to either upgrade the above bits or chop it for something that makes you happier :driver:
-
The dpf delete is now totally illegal and company's advertising the removal and mapping around it will get prosecuted
-
Well the Mercedes has gone
Long live the Golf!

Lovely motor. What's the spec?
Great choice :happy2:

Still finding stuff but I know it has:
Xenon/LED headlights (cornering which I think is standard now)
LED DRL’s
Adaptive cruise control
Colour instrument cluster
DAB+
Bluetooth with multimedia streaming
Front+rear parking sensors
Folding door mirrors with dip on reverse
TPMS
18” Alloys
Other than a service which is being done by VW Southampton and paid for by the garage I bought the car from it doesn’t need anything to the point where the only thing missing is Satnav which I am looking at the moment – thinking Navigation Pro..

Cor - Totally illegal, as opposed to just illegal Andy?
Plenty of tuners are still offering DPF deletes, very publically and they're still very accessible. Yes they don't comply with the road traffic act or MOT standards and haven't for some time now, it's presumably still something diesel track cars/race cars will have done so there wouldn't be any prosecutions on face value of offering such a service. As I understand it it's not breaking the law to have it done, but breaking the road traffic act to drive a car with no DPF on UK roads.

These look great in Black Anthony, I'm glad you put right the wrongs :happy2:
Was it a simple case of giving it back, trouble free?
-
The merc most of been bothering you Anthony as you swapped already and a great choice as well,be interested how you compare it to the merc after a few weeks
@rdfcpete (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=590)
Far as am aware it's just for the road use,not sure if the law is coming in or it is now
-
I don't think it's possible to upgrade from another car, vw have locked the radio to the car - which is good because the units aren't stolen - I think the only way forward will be a 3rd party radio/sat nav or car play/mirror link if your car is new enough.
The Mk7 is not mod friendly like the Mk5 - that's why I went for the best spec I could find - get yourself registered on golfgtiforum, lots more info on the MK7. Not much on here.
-
Hi Eccie,
Agree. I didn't realise how mod unfriendly the MK7 is, however i'm still happy with it.
I was looking at a couple of Mk7's but they blow the budget, had i know what i do now i would have pimped the wife out :)
BTW - been on golfgtiforum for a while :)
-
My Bro just ordered a Shooting brake AMG Merc company car, just a diesel, but they look great, interestingly they've gone FWD on those so any snowfall might not be a complete disaster.

I'm presuming it's a cla shooting brake being fwd. A class, b class, cla and gla class are all primarily fwd. A class, cla and gla have 4wd versions also. No rwd only versions of these.
Just incase you were interested
-
Yeah, think it's the CLA AMG Shooting Brake thing, "all show and no go", haha. Didn't know that about the Merc Range. :happy2:
