Ok so the car is on the long life 2 year service plan with the main dealer and it was changed 10k ago in March this year.
Not sure if I'll stay with the same dealer or try and find an VW independent dealer or another place to do the servicing but happy to an oil change in between the 2 yearly services.
I'll be doing 10k a year max. Is it better for higher mileage cars to have a more frequent oil change, every 10k or less?
Having looked at several threads I've got even more confused.... :scared:
Main dealer has used 5/30 Castrol Edge and mate has been using Quantum long life to top up. Pretty much the same I guess?
Should I get the rubber o ring just in case when buying the oil, filter, bolt & washer?
Heard people mention TPS is good but it's trade only? Any other places for either oil?
Seen some Quantum on Ebay for £25 or so.
Thanks again for advice. :happy2:

I get my oil from opieoils. I use 5w40 (Fuchs Titan pro race s) and service every year or 10k miles without fail at a VW independent specialist.
5w30 is what VW recommended originally iirc.
In my opinion you aren't doing yourself any favours when it's time to sell by servicing every two years. It will put people off.

As mentioned 2 years would put people off. Go for oil every year

The first thing i would do is get the service regime changed from Long Life to Time and distance - A service every 12 months or 10k miles -whichever comes first.
The Time and distance service alternates between a minor and major service. I believe this regime is far more suitable for out Engines.
Some members go a step further and change oil in between services - every 5k miles.
Although you wont be on a long life service regime, make sure you still use the long life oil though. ie. Castrol Edge 5w30 or Quantum Long Life 3 oil.
Hope this helps.

As above, I fall into the category of 5k/6 month services. I always have done with every car I've owned. Peace of mind really. Since I got the car, I've been using quantum long life 3, as I had around 40/50 litres of it, but when that's exhausted, I will probably be changing to 5w40 millers nano or a high grade 5w40 shell helix ultra or that

As above, change oil at least every 10 k or 1 year. Many TPS branches will sell to public on a "cash sale" basis. Don't forget to buy new sump plug and washer.
-
Cheers for info, I'll try the local TPS too. If no joy then ebay I think!
Looked at the youtube vid of bloke changing the oil filter, he mentioned checking the large rubber o ring/seal.
Is that something that generally needs replacing or should i just get the sump bolt and washer?
-
Yes, you should change the o-ring.

Cheers

The oring comes in the oil filter box anyhow, so why wouldn't you change it?? Or am I missing something?

Erm, maybe I didn't know that it does?! I'm a Golf newbie remember.
Cheers for that though.

Sorry if that came across cheekily, as it wasn't meant to!
