Title: Replacing a snapped fuel flap
Post by: Lewo on November 12, 2015, 09:40:40 pm: Well 3 days into owning my first GTI and some scr*te has levered open the petrol flap and snapped it, think they've tried to nick some petrol as well....... :mad:
Anyway, I'm about to search the breakers as I'm guessing a new one and paint will cost loads. Half of the hinge is still there but as it was getting dark I couldn't see much.
Basically, is it an easy job to fit a replacement once I've located one and thinking of using a basic key lock one for now and guess any will fit?

Post by: Lewo on November 13, 2015, 10:41:09 pm: Ok I asked the VW parts guy if you can just buy the hinged flap (1) in the diagram and he said you have to buy it complete with the the body (3) as a complete unit.
I've seen some on Ebay selling the flap separately so assume you can fit it to the main body so has anyone just replaced the hinged flap part on it's own, is it easy to get the spring out and remove the hinge part?

Undid the screw and tried to pull out the old unit. It ain't budging.
So looks like you need to get behind it somehow but not sure if it's removing the inner wing or the trim in the boot.
Anyone have a clue before I take it to a garage?

It was a great deal tighter than that, I couldn't budge it like that and didn't want to force it in case there was more to it so took it to a garage.
Don't know what they did but I waited for 10 mins and it cost £20 so was happy enough with that.
I hope I don't have to replace another one......

It was years of being stuck on there that's all :smiley:

Glad it didn't cost you too much and the garage were nice enough to only charge you £20 :wink:
