Title: Strange MK5 GTI, Power Surge Issue?
Post by: schmidt_vr6 on December 16, 2015, 11:11:29 am
Hi Guys,

Bought another GTI DSG Yesterday night. The car drove smooth for an hour or so in the journey. I was cruising at 70MPH in 6th Gear. Then I pressed on the throttle and the car dropped a gear into 5th but the revs were stuck at 4,000RPM, It then dropped another gear into 4th and at this time the revs were still stuck at 4,000RPM.

I eased of the throttle and planted the right foot again. Now I could feel the car was jerking/Kangarooing as though its a Misfire/low on fuel and its cutting the power sort of thing.

So I pulled over onto the hard shoulder and now the engine is still started and is in 1st gear. Tried setting of gently and the issue is still there. Jerking, Revs not moving, More like as its run out of fuel.

So I switched engine off and started it up straight away, and the car is back to normal again. The rest of the journey the car drove fine. Picking up speed and very responsive.

Also no lights came on the dash when it started to misbehave.

Any ideas of what it could be. The whole drama only lasted 10 seconds and after that it was back to normal again.

Fault scan should throw up any reports to the ECU as to what happened. Dare I say it, but mechatronics unit having a bit of a hissy fit? :jumping:

Start engine and pull out dip stick to clarify it's not the pcv valve.

Just started the car took it for a 10 min drive and it she spluttered for a second and then back to normal again.

Going to scan it on vagcom tomorrow

Sounds like pcv, its easy to check this. run the engine and pull out the dipstick and if your car runs rough and you hear hissing the pcv is okay. you don't need to pull the dip out all the way either  :happy2:

I've tried the PCV test and it's fine.

I'm thinking maybe the Coil Pack is breaking down or spark plugs needs a change?

Thats good news.

Coil packs don't usually give a sign and just pack up but worth a try. Also the plugs if they haven't been replaced for a while.

Plugs recommended for replacement every two years by dealers.
Check plugs and also for boost leaks on the n75 and boost hoses.

Right I think I may have found the issue.

Went to start the Engine and it wouldn't crank over. So the battery went dead. Got a working battery from another car and it soon drained that one out too.

So I think the alternator is not charging the battery and is draining the battery.

Not sure if the power surge cut out sort of thing is due to a dead/weak battery as basically these engine/dsg gearboxes are all run off electric. Maybe there's not enough power and it kind of dips the power?

I had my dsg gti parked for four months totally dead battery and once I got it jumped it was good a gold.

If the alternator is not charging the battery warning light on dash should flicker dim???.

Log save all codes. delete codes and drive for a good few miles and re check for codes :happy2:

I got that stupid manifold runner error code but after deleting it, it's now gone.

Most likely to get a few codes after this but here hooping not to.
We can then take it from there???
