Title: Another 'rusty' issue with my GTI :0(
Post by: ghuk on December 16, 2015, 07:57:29 pm
Hey guys

Could anyone tell whats causing my wheel to rust? Not even sure exactly how its happened but its occurred pretty quickly. Also I'm pretty sure when I am driving that this wheel is making a rumbling sound, almost like a bearing has failed.

Not very clued up when it comes to cars (you can probably tell), infact I'm not entirely sure what parts needs replacing. Any advice you can give me would be much appreciated

Thanks in advance
George

The rust look is probably a poor refurb job done on the wheel. @ghuk (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=13406)

Rumbling sound could be the tyre causing the noise so what you need to do is jack it up and turn the wheel by hand and feel the rear joint meaning wishbone for a rough grinding feeling.

You mean the disks where they meet the alloy right? If so it may be that they are cheap disks and surface rust has happened. When you first drive it you can hear the rumbling then it goes away the disk face could have a little surface rust on it too and the noise you can hear is the pads taking the surface rust off. You could try painting the rusty bit if it annoys you with good paint but disks tend to get a little rusty anyway in my experience.

As said, if you mean the obvious rusty bit in behind its not the wheel. Most discs/hubs do it, I just sanded mine off then painted it.

Hi all

Thanks for the replies, its more of an OCD thing with me so will have to ask Santa for some good quality sandpaper and get to work  :happy2:

With regards to the noise its much more noticeable at speed on the motorway, not so noticeable at low speeds hence why I was assuming its a bearing going

Anyway I'm sure I will get to the bottom of it eventually
