Nice build, but the pictures got me curious, why have you taken the engine out for a K04 build??
And since you have bought new hoses for the IC i assume you changed to the S3 IC also??
With Revo chip do you have a graph of your output?

Great build  :happy2:  :santa:
Title: Re: big stu's gti
Post by: rubber toe on January 02, 2010, 09:49:53 am
its about time you got some pics up

you know i love it mate  :happy2:

danishmkv - we decided to take the engine out because we felt it was easier and quicker than doing  the job with the engine in , only took 4 1/2 hours to do the job start to finish and it took longer to do my conversion with the engine in
Title: Re: big stu's gti
Post by: big_stu_86 on January 02, 2010, 12:40:05 pm
thanks m8!

erm the s3 ic is on my to do list in the near future! unfortunitly i dont have

a graph printout!  :sad1: once the ic is on itl be straight to the rollers to c how she goes!

like rubber toe says it was alot easier with engine out it meant 1 of us cld replace the ko3 whilst

the other could change the injectors, which went rather smoothly!  :happy2:

Thx for the replies:

Taking it out meant refilling the Ac and at the same time cooling, but it just goes to show there are no one way about things
Why did you buy hoses for the IC if you didn't change the IC?
Looking forward to your graphs, i'm waiting for the tuningcompany to do some magic then it's of to the rollers b4 and after fitting  :happy2:

harry over on briskoda dyno'd his k04 converted vRS the other day @ awesome-GTI RR day, and made 348hp 358Ibft and also suffered misfires for the run.

his car made something like 324hp 310Ibft on jkms rollers straight after installation
Title: Re: big stu's gti
Post by: morry_ed30 on January 31, 2010, 02:09:29 am
Misfires are not what you want on a dyno run, most likely cause being a poor spark or timing issues especialy if the car is running a hpfp, it will highlight any weakness in spark plugs or coils. Idealiy after having things like a remap, intake, downpipe fitted ect.... you should have your readiness code reset by your main dealer, or sum1 who knows what there doing using VAGcom, this is a procedure that adapts all your engine management electronics such as throttle angle, coolant temp, air mass, manifold pressure and lamda readings. over the course of afew weeks your cars ECU will adapt to the modifications made so you may find this unnessasary, but i would not put to much faith in dyno readings takin directly after a remap, it makes sense that his hp increased and leveled out as the time passed :happy2:

still to get a cat back exhaust and intercooler so a reckon that should get it to the 360bhp mark.

....Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but I think you are legally obliged to have a rear foglight on cars under a certain age.

Personally I like and much prefer seeing 2 reversing lights but I think the MOT blue meanie might fail you for no rear fog. Also, still with my boring Captain Sensible hat on, insurance might get very wriggly in the event of some types of accident claim such as someone rear-ending you in fog and saying they didn't see you and the investigators then knowing why they didn't see you. Not worth the risk imo.

Personally I like and much prefer seeing 2 reversing lights but I think the MOT blue meanie might fail you for no rear fog. Also, still with my boring Captain Sensible hat on, insurance might get very wriggly in the event of some types of accident claim.

just like decats and people removing the crash bars from their rear bumper, all could potentially fail MOT and void insurance claims, but people still do it! Love it with those works wheels, I really want a set for my cupra, my mate has a set of 19's on his slammed s3

....Are the rear crash bars removed on this car too?

Unfortunately you guys just don't get it. Without a rear foglight it greatly increases the risk of someone piling into your rear in thick fog. Potentially, someone, even you, may be caused considerable personal physical injury - So that's hardly "not causing anyone any harm". Such attitudes are at best, ignorant, and at worst, irresponsible and very immature.

Perhaps the only way you'll learn is the hard way. So be it.

im with you on that robin. This has no reflection on the OP, just and observation of drivers around my area.

There are a helluva lot of drivers who use their front and rear fogs when its not foggy or clear conditions. That to me, its just plain stupid!

Then when it comes to "pea soup" time on the motorway and visibility is waaaaaaaay under 100m, hardly ANYONE has their fogs on!

what is with that?!!

I hate the fog thing. The tiniest bit of mist and people put on their fogs and then leave them on for the rest of the morning despite the fact it's sunny.

Worse than fogs in light mist is full beams!

I think people need automatic foglights as they clearly have no idea when to use them.

....I agree, stealth. The local Police are currently stopping cars with fogs when it's not foggy. It's part of a campaign costing £800,000! But it also includes crackdowns on speed and mobile phone use and, of course, alcohol. I got stopped for my DRL's but they accepted my explanation and apologised profusely for holding me up as well as commenting how nice my car is.

A do get what ur trying to say RR. but lets face it i have never used the fog light since i got the car as there was no need, n now that the summer is coming a dont think it will be needed for a while! to say this is an immature, irresponsible thing to do is a bit excessive. Lets face it every1 on this forum including yourself has broke the speed limit on the road at some point possibly causing some1 including yourself considerable physical injury,  so does that make every1 as irresponsible and immature as myself for changing my fog light.

i agree with the whole fog lights on when not foggy thing but to be honest i think the whole rear fog light missing has been blown out of proportion

Imho opinion i dont think its a big deal as i've had my car a year now and i've had to use them twice , end of the day etto and i'm sure there are a lot of worse/more dangerous cars on the road than what is in effect a bulb that is very rarely used inop   :scared:

@ big stu,

No worries, mate, I'm just expressing my strong opinion about them and was pointing things out in case you weren't aware, albeit somewhat harshly in reaction to your(?) response.

In my neck of the woods there is high ground to cross whichever direction I leave home and the sea mist hangs about quite often. I don't miss not having my front fogs and never found them much help anyway but without a rear fog down here the odds are very much against you.

I think the comparison to speeding is slightly flawed. I agree that in many circumstances it is irresponsible, but that fact is you can choose whether or not to speed, and base that decision on whether the conditions allow it. If you're saying that you won't use your car when it is foggy, then fine, but otherwise I think you're putting other people and yourself in danger for the sake of a failed aesthetic improvement. That and that it's illegal.

....My turn to agree with you, Andrew. I think it's a flawed comparison too but you can only lead a horse to water and can't make him drink. Stealth bothered to post the formal text of the legislation and you and I have presented the principles and reasoning supported by others in agreement.

If it was me who had done this mod and then learnt from others here what its potential problems were, I'd say thanks guys, this site is a very valuable source of knowledge, and then change it to comply with the law.

No more to be said really. I'm afraid that to be very honest, a part of me wants these guys to get pulled by the Police for it or fail the MOT.

i must say RR you make me laugh every time i read 1 of your aggresive, harsh, over exaggerated opinions about this  :booty:.
do you think that telling me that it is illegal will change my point of view, i obviousley do not require my fog light as much as u do. i told you i new the consequences of this and being a vw tech i also no that this is illegal. Every1 is entitled to their own point of view but there are better ways of expressing them. you said theres a part of you that hopes a fail an MOT or done by the police, i dont recall the police checking the operation of all my lights or checking cv boots or other road legal requirements when i got pulled over so i cant see that happening. n for an MOT, being a tech i will never fail 1 for this minor fog light issue as it is a quick change to do.  :P

yes your right this site is a very valuable source for information and very helpful!!!!
So if i tell you to slow down because you were doin 48 mph in 40 and may cause sum1 serious injury, would you slow down to comply with the law or carry on because its safe at the time.

i think i have to disagree about the flawed comparison, as breaking the law is breaking the law simple as that. does that mean if the police catch you speeding you can explain that the conditions were perfect and it was safe to break the limit and they will accept this?

@ boaby supper, i totaly agree about how out of proportion this has got, think its the contrast between how younger and older people think and how they express their point of view nowa days !!!

You're not doing yourself any favours, boy.

Just for the record, I adhere to the 20, 30, 40 limits rigidly and also 50's if they are roadworks or temporary limits.

Mckay, the thing is with having the front plate there, imo you're spoiling the look of
the car by blocking the airflow through the open grille. To me, it looks as though you're not
particularly bothered about the car's cooling ability. And the us spec short recess bumper
visually doesn't flow as good as ours does across that phat rear. Just to sweeten my plates
up a little i got my mate in the shop to reduce the overall size of the font ever so slightly,
it's subtle but it works for me.

Big stu, are you still using just the one open fog grille? I reckon you should have the pair as
they add width and aggression. A mazda stubby would be a nice touch too, goes great with
the planted look, i'm waiting for mine to arrive. And personally, i wouldn't touch the vw
badges as they help with the look i like, posh hooligan ha ha.

What are your thoughts on the wishbones? Cheers  :happy2:

i get what you are saying about cooling and i understand that it will be blockin it a bit but its not a full size plate and the font is smaller so i wouldnt imagine it blockin it to much had it this way for a few months now and never had any issues..

Yeah gotcha, but what i meant was . . . even if there are no issues by having the plate there

(and i doubt there would be to be honest) imo it's one of those golden rules you don't break

if you want your car to look right, you just don't block open grilles, not even by a tiny bit  :happy2:
