Title: Car cut out when starting
Post by: GTIEagles on December 30, 2015, 09:47:52 am
Hi, this morning I had a drive and when I stopped the car and restarted the car completely cut out as it was turning over. The dash went blank and it finally started normally but all the dash warning lights were on. They gradually went off one by one and now the car starts fine.

Faulty battery or alternator?

Check battery with a multimeter. if everything looks fine with that then check the wiring around the battery terminals and fuse box next to the battery.

Thanks mate, I will take a look at the weekend. The same thing happened last night but this time only the clock reset!

I'm having/had this problem at the moment. Had the battery tested during the week and it was fine however a terminal was loose on the battery so tightened it up and it hasn't done it since then, fingers crossed..

I tested mine yesterday and the battery is reading 11.4V with the ignition off. I'm guessing my battery needs charging or is knackered?

11.4V is either very flat, or buggered. Worth taking off the car and charging overnight, but I wouldn't hold your breath....

The strange thing is, the car starts fine. It doesn't turn over slow at all. It's only happened twice now but I will borrow a charger and see if it improves.

That twice is a warning to say change me or I go dead celled for good. the signs are always there but we sometimes fail to notice them.

It could well be one of your 'Ignition control cicruit' relays, as mines cut off randomly one day while doing motorway speeds, before coming back to life just as I stopped on the hard shoulder.

A new relay for a cost of £9.80 sorted it  :happy2:

Thanks John.

I have ordered a new battery today as it did it again yesterday and I took another stationary reading of 11.4V so I think it's about time for a change! I wonder if the battery might be causing the intermittent torque sensor error I get from the steering? It would be a bonus if it solves that too  :signLOL:

Got my battery here for a great price: https://www.tayna.co.uk/Varta-VW-1J0-915-105-AE-Battery-1J0915105AE-P9543.html
