Title: Hi From Norfolk - Looking at a golf tomorrow!
Post by: harryh733 on January 01, 2016, 10:52:44 pm
Hi everyone,

I've been looking at Golfs for a while now and Im finally going to look at one close to me tomorrow morning, I currently own a 2007 Audi A4 Avant so the golf will be a much sportier and smaller car which is what tempts me.

The car I'm looking at is listed below and I was just wondering if people had any thoughts? (I thought it would be best to ask people who own them already!) It sounds great to me and I'm really looking forward to seeing it but not knowing golfs is there anything I should look out for?

https://www.gumtree.com/p/volkswagen/volkswagen-golf-gti-tfsi-2.0-turbo-200bhp-/1145312504

I'll hopefully be getting more involved on here soon!

Thanks.

Harry

seems okay from first glance. 94k miles i would class as high personally...seems to have fsh.. good sign, few months and whatever he has put on is going to be 100k miles. i dont know a great deal on the mk5s and high mileage ones but seems had a fair bit of the "wear and tear" items changed etc.. its going to be alot different to your audi! :jumpmove:

I wouldn't worry about mileage. VWs are good for it. I bought mine at 105k and drives perfectly fine

Nothing wrong with high milers. I'd prefer a 100k car that had been looked after with regular oil changes etc than one with 60k with patchy history.

Just be wary of cars that could have their clutch on the way out, timing belt coming up etc.

Those are often the real reasons for sale (that the seller would likely keep quiet about) on cars coming up to higher miles.

Just do your homework on service intervals, how often the belt should be changed, and so on. A big wad of receipts is often a good indication of the car's history as much as the service book.

HPI it, a proper one. The cheaper text message HPIs aren't that comprehensive and you could come unstuck.

Check for rust on the front arches, underneath the rear badge/boot handle, and on the sills. The arches should be covered by VW warranty, but in practice some owners have more success in getting through the red tape and actually getting VW to agree to the repair than others.

I'm sure there's much more, and I'm sure there's a proper buying guide somewhere (if so could someone put up the link?).

Good luck, and let us know how you get on.

Lol I did none of the above. I must admit rushed into mine as I couldn't find a gti close enough. Mine had stamps but no receipts. It had a dodgy head lamp replaced, damaged wing and a apparent cam belt change but no record of the  water pump.

I had oil filter change, gearbox oil change, sorted one wing out, sorted headlights and rear badge. Need to sort other wing and bumper had a dodgy repair where it's faded. Finally, need to do water pump and cam follower then I will be happy with it.

Then when changing my headlights I noticed the grill was non oem, part of the front panel been cut away and the air con condenser, and may be I/c and rad, have been bent. I asked the lady recently she confirmed she hit someone at a roundabout and her bf at time fix it.. Clearly on the cheap.

I have loads of dodgy fixes and self tapping screws all over the front.

Like AJP says, don't let the miles put you off - as long as it drives well and has full service history with paperwork to back it up. You can't go far wrong.

It says ad not available, did you buy? Looks good to me to be honest-but nothing beats going to see a car in the flash of course. I've seen some absolute nails that previously looked amazing online. Thank God for return train tickets..
Can't really trust what anyone says unfortunately!
Anyway, would be interested to hear what you thought of it and how much you ended up paying!
