Hi, got Led bulbs in now, which don't seem to last very long...
I've seen led replacement units, are they any good?
What are you guys using/fitting? Any recommendations?
Cheers

Cheers for that, looks like what I have now... Only lasted 6 months... Works then starts flashing on goes off...

Check ebay item 321639963682
Ive used these style ones for around 3 years and no issues. Plus they brighter than just the bulbs

Cheers for that... I'll take a look

try and find some genuine VW ones if you can. they work perfectly fine :happy2:

Cheers, are the VW genuine ones a plug and play? No coding/error codes on the mk5? Mines a 2007 which has the festoon type bulbs... Cheers

I installed these before Christmas, nice colour fits well with the car gives it a modern look without being to bright etc. Plug and play no errors so far.

Hmm that's interesting...I've looking at those, see link below...are they the same? The seller did not know if they'd fit/work without errors...!
The way I understand the plate lights on the mk 5 GTi is there are two different types, perhaps depending on the year of your car? Mine is a 2007, it has the festoon type replacement bulbs in them, and I believe some have a complete sealed unit? perhaps earlier mk5?
Any ideas?

defo plug and play and no coding required for an 07 GTi? or errors?
-
99% certain.. dont think yours would be any different from mine at that age

Hey Guys,
Ordered those ones (from get4less on ebay) for my 56 plate. They come on for a couple of seconds then go out. I say 'they'. Unfortunately I could only fit one side as the previous owner had at one point fitted an all in one reversing camera/light which seemed to be soldered direct from what I could see. So no plug to just detach. And I don't fancy taking the bumper off to see what's going on. So I may just replace the bulbs after all and hope they're not too bright. Unless anyone has any suggestions?

it'll be because there not canbus error free. the low resistance of the LED's makes the car think theres a fault in the circuit and shuts it off for protection. you either need canbus error free bulbs or fit resistors
-
Ok cheers for that. So are the resistors easy to get hold of?
-
I ordered a set of these for mine and they work perfectly, no bulb out errors or anything, I'm on an 05 plate though
-
what are the best for a mk6 gti?
-
I used buy the whole LED units off eBay, as opposed to just the bulbs . Excellent white light and lasted over a year.

X2. Don't understand the point of the bulbs as they end up flickering, putting light out errors on dash and not even that bright.

Right guys, for those having trouble with comparability on those genuine VW LED units, I'd recommend these resistors;

They seem to have used genuine Vag plugs too.
Worked a treat for mine. Now giving off a much better light, but crucially, they actually stay on.

Only mk6s with older BCM (that can't be coded to LED) will need resistors with OEM LED license lamps. The mk5s are fine with the OEM LEDs.

Hmmm that's interesting as they definitely didn't work on mine without the resistors...Unless you mean they can be fitted without resistors but have to be coded instead?
All witchcraft and wizardry to me!

Just to make sure, did you get genuine mk6 license plate LEDs?
-
Yeah they were the genuine ones in the link at the start of this thread. Had all the VW stamps etc on them too.

These shouldn't need any resistors in mk5. Weird if you had problems with them.
I didn't need resistors in both my Golfs and I know a lot guys who have them with no issues. You'd the first...

I have installed a few of the CANBUS Leds into my unit untill summer when I can be bothered to change the units over for full LEDs, however whenever I go to turn them on I get a strange like buzzing sound and I get the error on the dash?
-
Yep they're the ones Shoduchi.
In that case, thinking about it, perhaps it's due to the fact I'm only able to put one in, as the other side has a led numberplate light integrated with a reversing camera.. Which has always worked regardless.
Im wondering if, as it was only 1 LED light before, and the other side was a normal 'Festoon' bulb in the standard unit, there wasn't enough of a resistance discrepancy to throw a warning..? As I'm assuming the wiring for both lights are both on the same loom, does that make sense?
-
Probably total bull, sorry I know nothing about electronics!

Probably, it's a basic system. The resistors only provide the needed resistance to the circuit to not activate the bulb out error.
