Title: Why the hell does my car feel so quick today?!
Post by: AJP on January 08, 2016, 07:02:22 pm
So, coming home this evening, the thing was spinning up in 3rd. Dry roads.

Usually it'll spin a bit in 2nd, but not massively, I'd still get a good bit of power onto the road. But tonight 2nd was like flooring it in 1st, and 3rd was like flooring it in 2nd.

Conditions were dry, 7 degrees. Considering it's been above 12 for most of December, would this have something to do with it? Maybe a combination of colder charge and harder tyres?

Or is it overboosting and signalling that the turbo's on its way?!

Anyone else notice a difference in these sort of temperatures?

242bhp and 296lbft R-Tech Stage 1, Michelin Supersports, full Hunter alignment done a few months ago.

Dense air equals a little extra horses and I've noticed this in all my turbo charged cars I've owned. Feels very light and responsive in all gears.

Oh yeah I'd expect a little bit more - I've noticed that too with 1.8T cars etc, but not to this extent. It honestly felt like an extra 40lb/ft!

Bloody hell that's a lot of torque  :rolleye: have you checked for the usual boost leaks pcv or dv check?. not saying it will have problems but who knows?.

Well it had a new pcv, rev g dv, cam follower in the summer just before the remap at R-Tech, and it's felt strong and consistent since.

But tonight it's like it went a bit mental. It wasn't spiking or anything, still smooth and measured power delivery, but just... lots more!

Kinda thinking in the back of my mind it was boosting too much to be 'normal'.

But I could be worrying about nothing. I'll keep an eye on it. Going Stage 2 soon so I guess I'll have to get used to it

I used to have this feeling with the tt and it's like wow  :surprised: where'd all that power just come from  :jumping: This had been vastly discussed on the tt forum and it all boils down to the dense air condition.  :driver: :driver:

I definitely need to sort an anti lift kit out soon then. It's likely I'll gain another 30lbft at the very least from the turbo back Powervalve and Stage 2 map - in 'normal' conditions!

Kinda get the feeling the Supersports aren't up to scratch in cold weather though.. But there's plenty of meat on them, and like I mentioned it had full alignment a few months ago.

Wish I could just boot it and use all the power like in an S3 or R...!

Any remap requires a cat back or turbo back system which allows you more flow and more power. had a relentless dp and milltek cat back on the tt and after the remap the car went crazy powered on me  :jumping: Shame it wasn't as easy as bolt on parts to the gti as the Badger V3 tip and come filter helped even before the re map stage 1 265bhp gained 35 horses but also had a huge fmic with all the rest. Lowering also helps the power band imho as there's minimal lift.  :happy2:

I wouldn't say a remap requires an exhaust - if I've read that right?

A Stage 1 map is designed for a car with stock hardware (like mine). A Stage 2 map (at R-Tech at least) is designed for a car with either a decat or uprated 'sports' cat. You can't Stage 2 a car with the standard cat for example. You can run a car on a Stage 1 map with a decat/sport cat, but likely with a cel and not at full power potential.

Incidentally on the tsfi cars at least there's nothing to be had power-wise from just a cat back. The restriction is in the cat, so you couldn't run a Stage 2 map without going full turbo back.

Yes I did realise that mods don't do anything with the tfsi unless going stage 2 with the necessary HPFP full turbo back and advisable decat IMO as theres a lot of restriction there regardless of going sports cat. with the 1.8t you get more power at any map stage with a better flowing exhaust and cone filter.  proven too by wak tt @vagcheck

Colder dense air and the tyres not gripping as well as they do when it's warmer.

Buy Meth Injection - feels like that and more, all of the time  :signLOL:

It's the cold dense air, I was out on my R1 today and it was loving the cool air just the same. I was a bit cold though lol.

Yeah you've answered your own questions    Hard tyres and the boost feeling more boosty!

No way the turbo is on it's way out, but if you want to see how it's boosting, get VCDS and log the request boost and actual boost measuring blocks.

If you see several rows (in the output spreadsheet) where the actual boost exceeds the requested boost, then yeah you're getting a tasty spike.  Boost is seldom consistent in the colder months.  That little N75 valve has it's work cut out and can't always keep up.
