Title: RCD510 MDI for Spotify
Post by: Nasir on January 13, 2016, 03:19:57 pm
I'm in a predicament here regarding music solutions for the car.

What I have right now:

RCD300
iPod connection in the Armrest

What I need:

To play music from my iPhone 6S via Spotify (could use Apple Music if necessary). I do not have any other source for music, so SD card etc is not an option.

Control playback from MFSW and the headunit

See track info etc on the highline and headunit

Possible Solutions:

RCD510 and MDI retrofit to the glovebox

Or MDI retrofit fit to the armrest is preferable, as I don't want to open and close the glovebox every time I get in.

RCD510 and Bluetooth streaming - This is ideal, but it sounds like a lot of work getting the mic in place.

- Does the MDI play from the iPhone 6S?
- Does it play and display info from other sources on iPhones other than the 'Apple Music' app?
- How hard is the MDI retrofit to the armrest?

As always, the help is appreciated fellas

I fitted a bluetooth kit to my RNS-510 this week. It works with Spotify you can skip tracks from the head unit or steering wheel.

FYI The bluetooth version i installed needed Polar Fis installed.

Okay that's good to know. Is there a Bluetooth version that doesn't require Polar FIS? Was the Bluetooth easy to install?

I'm not sure if there is a bluetooth version with streaming that will work without polar fis.

Its not that hard to fit. A couple of guys on here sell the kit and will fit it for you. @Pashka (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=5723) @Eddie-NL (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2345)

No need bt kit to play music.
If you thinking of getting RCD510 than all you will need is AUX connector

Cheers. I thought the 9W2 was capable of A2DP?

Oh I have Aux right now. I'd just like to control it from the steering wheel and see track info. Just gets a bit tiresome trying to change it on the phone.

Well it looks like I've found the solution.

The RCD version for the Asian market has a built in USB controller. From this you can control an iPhone or USB stick just as you would with the MDI. The MDI is essentially built into the unit. So no need for any additional modules and I can just run the USB wire to the armrest.

And a big plus, this version is considerably cheaper than the normal RCD 510. Slight downside is that there's no RDS, so no radio station names. Doesn't bother me as I never listen to the radio.

Going to order it. I'll report back in a few weeks as it comes from China.

Well it looks like somebody in Portsmouth is selling them, so it should be here next week. Need to update my CAN gateway.
