I had the pre-cat removed and a pipercross panel filter fitted to my standard GTI. I went from cambridge to brighton and back today so I've had a good run it in with a mix of motorway and B roads. My car is DSG.
Thoughts..
It pulls better. It seems to be far more happy to rev to 7k rpm. There is a slight increases in exhaust sound but nothing major. The turbo spoils up sooner but doesn't feel like I'm getting peak torque until later in the rev range compared to before.
Just thought this might help people thinking about doing it.

Hi mate, does the engine management light pop up?.

No.... well discussed on here. :stupid: :signLOL:

Hi mate, does the engine management light pop up?.
Shouldn't. Only if you decat the main cat. The secondary cat, or pre-cat, is there for emissions compliance in countries with stricter rules than the UK.
No problem with MOT, or engine lights.

Nice one AJP :happy2: looks like a summer gutting out job

My mechanic did it for me. He had a right old job with the bolts and had to flame a few to get them off. He broke 2. If your car is higher milage it might be worth taking it to a proper mechanic.

Thank for the update to this mate, mine has 71000k miles so far but I would be doing it at a garage as I know cars tend to p about with seized bolts that could need heating up.
Thanks :happy2:
-
Does this require special bolts if they break? Thinking about doing mine at my mates garage at the weekend, he's got a ramp there too but don't want to be stuck if I have to cut a bolt off.
-
You'll snap a stud more than anything.
One is a pain to replace but the other 3 are fairly easy, if they do then you can just nut and bolt it.

Took my car in for a pre cat delete, my mechanic took on look at the exhaust & wants it for the whole day (only incase of a problem, & having time to recifity it)
Mine is the original 9 year old 60K exhaust you see, so it's gonna be a biatch to remove!
Wasn't a wasted journey though. Fitted my piper cross panel filter while I was there.

Bigknickersjim how long did they take as we're there any problems with doing the job as I'm on 72k nearly?.
Thanks

Never did it!
Bolts where too rusty, not a 5 min job, looks like the plate under the exhaust needs removing & he didn't have time/want the hassle on a Saturday, I'll book it in during the week so he's got it all day.

Thanks for the reply as I'll be planning this mod soon so maybe have a bottle of heat with me or my blow torch as I do like a challenge as long ad nothing snaps :signLOL:

Got this done on mine a couple of days after I got the car. As mentioned it's a slightly deeper exhaust tone, pulls a little better. Luckily my mate (and mech) has done quite a few of these so knew to get it hot to avoid snapping anything.. Definitely worth doing, mine was taken out before gutting to avoid blocking the main cat with anything left over
-
Does turbo noise increase a bit with the cat material removed?
-
They are piss easy to remove crack them all off when the turbo is hot!
Just bare in mind the clamp that joins the cat to the middle sectiion, the nuts are usually pretty rusty and round easy be worth getting 2 new bolts ready or a new sleeve incase you need to cut it.
