Probably a dumb question but then I am pretty dumb when comes to exhausts but can anyone tell me what the pip diameter size is off the part of the exhaust that connects into the Muffler/Backbox
-
65 mm
-
65 mm
Cheers mate so roughly 2.5 inches which others have confirmed also.
Do you know where I can find a decent pic of the exhaust as googled and cannot find. Reason being I am getting a custom R32 Y pipe made up but need to confirm how it will fit on in place of the backbox

You'll be very lucky as there are around three that I've seen and one looks well dodgy :signLOL:
Go for the third pictured one :happy2: :signLOL:

pardon me it's phone typo errors.
there maybe around three pipes I've found as pictured. if that's what you're looking for. That's how they fit in place from what I've seen so far irish_ram.

I mean I am not too worried about the actual Y pipe itself as getting it made from a good source in stainless steel etc.
My worry is connecting it to the existing exhaust as in where does the backbox connect up, on a straight or curve and is it clamped or welded
-
if you look at the thrifty picture mate, you'll notice the Y part joins to a darker shaded pipe is. where the oem exhaust fits :happy2:
I bought a car back system and it looked just like that where the two sections meet up and join together.

Ah yes so welded on but at an angle so my Y pipe inlet would need to cure rather than be straight. Plus I need to make sure I get a Y pipe that has all the brackets welded to hold it in place
-
It is going to be touch and go as them is isn't a simple task.
Yes your Y pipe will need a curve and yes you need brackets attached but they are bent to specific requirements as you can see from that picture I sent you. I've seen someone try and manufacture a pipe with brackets and it was the worst thing I'd seen in a long time.
Maybe the guys where you're having the Y pipe made can help you?.

Yeah I need to send them a pic of the above and see what they say.
Thanks

Getting the Y pips welded to the oem is not a problem but the brackets to hold it and how accurate they need to be are making me think this is not worth it
-
No worries, let us know how you get on with it.
Only problem being the brackets and how they will be once done.
Cheers

They will need to be spot on to look good or they'll juat look tacky and bent or not aligned mate.

Have a word with nige at bcs power valve and see if he'll sell you some brackets as with these you can bolt the pipe on to the other side and fit the brackets on the rubbers from the garage who can then weld them on to spec :happy2:

not mine. I found a video and pics of the car in a VW forum. Hope I can have a nice work like that done someday. Good luck with the project.

Once it's bolted to the centre back section the arms will need welding on and another thing to think about is how is it going to be bolted on or pipe into pipe as you'll have to get it spot on if you have it bolted to the pipe.

Good fit but pipes are not centered with the r32 look lower which is why it needs to be spot on unless you can live with this.

I agree, potentially have someone selling an exhaust that was custom made R32 look so if can get that may have all the parts already and just needs welding on but will see.

So got this made

Looks pukka but where's the bend?.
-
Looks pukka but where's the bend?.
Yeah so that is what I thought but apparently some have cut the backbox off right back to where the pipe is straight and then clamp it on there if makes sense.
I cant seem to find a pic of a standard ED30 exhaust to see the attach options
-
Looks pukka but where's the bend?.
May have it wrong but someone suggested the existing exhaust backbox could be cut off where I have highlighted and then a straight fit on with new Y pipe

So I do have some knowledge just haha.
My only worry is that it will sound too loud without the backbox. I do want more sound but only really when accelerating and not really that loud it is constant and loud in the cabin when idling around town
-
:congrats:
Yes very loud :surprised:
-
:congrats:
Yes very loud :surprised:
mmm, maybe need a rethink then as do not want it sounding stupid loud in the cabin and outside when i am traveling at a steady 30mph around town

It won't be that bad as you've still got the centre box muffling the sound.
