Michelin PS2's may be a mighty fine summer tyre, but my GOD they have provided absolutely zero traction whatsover for the last 3 weeks. (I'm not suprised by the way) This morning I nearly had to ditch my car after attempting to pull away from traffic lights on a level surface, only to find the car travel sideway with the camber into the gutter. Finally managed to get it moving again.
Anyway, the point of this tread is .... Traction Control ON or OFF ?? What do you guys think ? I'm not sure it's helping me.
If I knew we would experience this weather each winter, I'd definately be getting some Winter Tyres.
6 inches of snow overnight in South Manchester by the way. I love it :jumpmove:
-
I'm in sheffield and not having much joy with Toyo T1R's! Dreading the drive home from work!!!
-
Last year I found it was better to turn it off going up hill as the ESP would cut all power completely meaning absolutely no progress. With the ESP off I found I could travel (with wheelspin) upto about 15mph or so. Probably the only situation I recommend turning it off.
-
The economy tyres that were on the rear on my car aren't actually that bad, much better than the Conti Sport Contacts. (I swapped the wheels front to rear).
But to be honest winter tyres are the way to go - you wouldn't believe the traction. Only problem is that people think you are driving like a t***, when you are driving sensibly.
And stability control off, high gear, keep the turbo off boost :happy2:
-
ive found TC on and third gear to take off seems to work best. You are correct tho about the michelins. I thought it was just me cos they only have about 3-4 mm left on the fronts.
-
You think your PS2's are bad? You should try my Sunny's! In the dry they're like your PS2's in the snow, so imagine what they're like now :scared:
-

Sunnys??
-
ESP off and drive carefully. The DSG helps, but if you are manual stick to the lowest revs in the highest gear.
The Vredesteins aren't much cop in this snow either, but must be a gazillion times better than the PS2's 'cos I can at least go up inclines up to a limit.
The wife's Jazz is actually quite reasonable in the snow, with it's CVT box and skinny wheels :ashamed:

Sunew. They're about the cheapest tyre you can get in 18"
They were bought as a temporary measure as I had major wheel/tyre vibration on my old wheels and I wanted to make sure it was definately them and not something like wheel bearings etc so I bought new wheels with el crappo tyres. They will be replaced very soon as they have served their purpose.
-
got to say my golf has been very good on the snow but today beat it...had to turn round and come home i couldnt even get to the motorway.... :sad1: goin to be hard as the car was booked in at vw racing today
-
if it gets too bad up near me i just leave everything to work for itself. my drive is up quite a steep hill and i managed to get up there the other week in 1 inch of snow with low profile t1r's and 8" wide wheels
traction on
dont touch any of the pedals
just steer
:happy2:
-
I find a mixture of TC on and off to work for me to pull off on inclines etc i need to turn it off but when im going i turn it back on. In the snow or ice its best to only let your car do one thing at a time so either brake, steer, roll or accelerate never more than one at a time and im yet to come close to slipping or sliding even on me PS2'S
-
I got a little stuck and turned the ESP off but as soon as I got away, it's straight back on. It's saved the car so many times it's amazing.
Does anyone find that the ESP works sometimes without the light flashing?
-
Massive fail for me thid morning as well. My soot chucker with it's great low rev torque was beaten by the snow. Couldn't even get off my estate ! Thats's with 18x8" wheels fitted with Good Year F1 Asymetricals.
Didn't matter if the TC was on or off, I was going no where quick.
Lets hope it get better tomorrow !
Cheers
Andrew

Must admit snow was bad in Harrogate at 05:30 this morning.Left the GTI in the garage & went for the works bus. :jumping:.First time this year tho.

I couldn't get off your estate either, even with no snow!

We are on about 7 inches and counting here in Warrington, and the speed its falling we are not going to be able to get out of the house never mind the car. :stupid:
-

Cant be as bad as the Z4 mate
That was awful in the slightest bit of snow.
Ive found the GTI to be ok in the snow, a lot better than i expected.

Lee, I know what you mean it's a very confusing estate

Any taken the plunge and running winter tyres? Ive often run some steelies over the winter months but to be honest the tyres are past there best.
So ive been looking at getting a set of winter specific tyres, ebay, part worns are about £160-180 for a set, 205 55 16. With the nature of my job i often have to travel on ungritted side roads in housing estates etc, as i visit clients at home. Few too many minor accidents at the moment for my liking.
Anyone experiences good/bad of decent brands, worthwhile etc....

You can get 'Winter Rims for Golf GTI' for about £52 each from a dealer iirc. These are for the tyre size you mention, but are actually better than the 17" or 18" sizes as you can also fit normal snowchains to them. I've got some Vredestein tyres, who specialise in winter tyres and they are amazing. I've also heard good things about Michelin Pilot Alpin. Finally, watch out for the offset for rims off ebay, the ideal is ET49, but lots (from audis and mk4 golf) are ET42.
-
i have the new Eagle f1's on my spares and they seem pretty good in the snow :happy2:
*edited, they are sh*** on ice on a hill LOL
-
Might be of use to some :happy2:

I already have the steelies in the garage as i ran them last winter.
Ive just opted for some from ebay - rather spend alittle on some winter rubber then trash another BBS RC from my anni.
Had a quick read on the brand - lassa snoways, so see how they go.
-
Just bought some 17" monza's of MATSU here ready for some winter / snow tyres - won't be caught out again - 300hp fwd 1500kg Golf plus 8" snow = no go !!
Instead am taking the better halfs' 8L S3 to work ahhhhh - the joys of haldex :signLOL:
-
I've got Bridgestone Potenza's on 18's and the only problem I've had was in stop-start traffic going up a fairly steep hill in heavy snow. Other than that car has been spot on.
-
What about Polo GTI 16s (mini Monzas) with winter tyres? Are they the right offset for the Golf?

Your right there! I had to dump the Z4 on a few occassions LOL!

Got to brave the Kent - Sheffield trip tommorow.
Two things;
Tyre pressures recommended for goodyear assymetrical (3/4mm front 6/7mm rear) for the conditions
M1 or my ussual M11 / A14 / A1 for my journey
Help appreciated!!
:happy2: :happy2:

m1 today was clear no problems from mansfield to milton keynes and back

For those that have been thinking about winter tyres, DO IT!!!!!!!
Mine arrived today, got stuck twice on way to the garage for fitting. Straight away they grip so much more, i cant believe the difference when braking on ice, compacted snow etc... i feel so much more happier driving in these condition snow.
Id rather spend a few £££££'s on winter tyres than having to hav emy car repaired due to an accident.
-
when i was based in germany i bought a set that i used on steel rims. the germans had to do it by law, but the difference they made was huge.
i chose to run them on a second set of rims purely as they wernt as good in the rain as my summer tyres, and were pants iin the dry once the roads cleared and the temps had raised. this way when it dried i could just swap back to my sumer tyres and vice versa.
lack of people using winter tyres i reckon is easily 75-80 % of the problems on the roads atthe moment. (wish i never sold mine before moving back to uk now :ashamed:)
-
any wide tyre in this weather is not going to be very good. The skinnier the tyre the better.
I haven't moved my car since boxing day-only takes me 10 min to walk to work.Bloody sick of clearing it on the morning thou
-
I live just out of sheffield and mines ok on the main roads.. its when i get onto the small estated where the DSG just spins and i fail to get anywhere :driver: :driver: :driver:
-
Just out of interest to those with a quaife diff, what difference if any does it make. I guess very little due to the same care and attention required but interested nevertheless for when I get it done (especially if you have also run winter tyres). :happy2:

Oh no, gutted for you mate!

Just drove down to southampton this morning. Wasn't too bad apart from muppets being in the right hand lane when they weren't overtaking!
What amazed me is how much the car has frozen over whilst on the drive down. Hell even the exhaust tips have frozen over!

You jest but they would probably be awesome in the snow!!

Curse these wide tyres. This car is sh1t in the snow
I'd go outside and find out what the tyres are, but it's cold and fook it. The car is FAB in the wet & dry - just snow it struggles with.
Took me 40 mins to move 1 meter off my drive last night.
Do I yearn for my Scoobys & S4? Nah.

Mine makes an awful loud noise when trying to get traction - I imagine its the traction control applying the brake to stop the wheel spinning?? I hate it, even with esp off it still cuts the power. Anyone elses do the same?
Our mini cooper s with its LSD is a different matter, brilliant in the snow - which makes no sense with it being even lighter and still having huge tyres??
-
I got stuck on our hill - and my dad's Polo just drove straight past :ashamed:
How do the R32s fair in this weather? Does 4wd make a big difference even though the rest is very similiar to the GTI (tyre size etc)

a bloke at work said his was bad, instead of 2 wheels loosing traction 4 did LOL
-
in london when i dropped my mother off at the airport before xmas, we all got stuck on a stretch of road, including a range rover sport. most amusing thing was we got overtook by an older range rover which just drove past like it wasnt snowing. presumably the sport had more performance orientated tyres

Yes that is the ESP working, the noise is normal. The ESP off should only turn off the traction control for safety reasons.

The R32s are really good apparently.

Just been over onto R32OC to have a nosy and they seem to be as bad as us!!

LOL - had another VENT earlier. After clearing the drive this VAG POS got caught on a tiny bit of ice. Could shift the car!!!! CURSE these stupid wheels & tyres.
It's nature's way of saying that I don't need to go out at all. Sadly my employer seems to think differently
We'll see what delights arrive over the next few days....

....
TIP: Only possible if you have DSG - Leave your car in 'P' and don't use the handbrake because it can freeze lock your brakes.
