Basically I have a literal change in circumstances and looking to px the GTi for some cash and looking at diesels. But I know nothing about them.
Looking at mk5/a3/Jetta/a4 just wondering which has the remapping power capabilities? As I wanna keep some performance and want the mpg.
Any help would be good.

All have great gains from a remap. The 170 will give you the best power but there's dpf issues. Some people do remove them but you may fail on mot emissions, 140 engine is decent but early models had head issues. 105 engine is what i have and is known for turbo issues so when looking at one make sure the turbo isnt making whiney noises

Spot on advice. I'd add that the 105 is the 1.9 TDI. It's very old in terms of design but it's bulletproof. All the turbos seem to make some whining noise. My last was quite loud I'd say, but in 15,000 miles and 14 months it had no issues.

:signLOL:.Nether modded a diesel turbo
-
The mk4 130 gt tdi beast for mapping but expect head gasket to blow or get it uprated along with fresh t belt kit it will last almost forever :signLOL:
-
Found a 140 near me that has had a reconditioned turbo 2 months ago.
-
What year is the car you have found
-
2006
-
Just make sure its not loosing coolant
-
1.9 105 is the best. no turbo issues. that was the 2.0 140 also.
i had my old 1.9 (build thread in link below) and abused it and engine was fine until 185k when it was written off.. being broken for parts at darkside last i heard.

I have a 1.9 tdi A4 that Ive been running for a few years. Its got 250 thousand miles on the clock and the only problem I've had is a wiring loom go. In fact, I've not changed the clutch, or turbo and it still runs like a brand new car.
I would recommend those cars until the cows come home. Especially that engine. And I properly thrash the hell out of my cars. Although that engine seems to perform better when you constantly give it some.

How quick are the 105s when remapped?
-
Safe map would bring it to 140-150. Anything more can be a bit aggressive but it has been done

How do they pull compared to the GTi so I can base it on something?
-
They pull very well after a remap
-
I had a 1.9 BXE in a SEAT, also had a 2.0 BKD for four years, I definitely wouldn't buy a 1.9 personally, especially with so many throwing conrods out the engine block now (engine version dependant).
The 1.9 went to a family member cheap as the turbo sounded way worse than the one i replaced on my 2.0, 22k later it is still hanging on.
A mapped 1.9 perks it right up, but a mapped 2.0 is better.
Whatever you do, buy a six speed and not five speed.
-
I had no issues with my 1.9. The conrod issue is much less prevelant than the 2.0 tdi porous heads.
The 2.0 is smoother / quicker but id say the 1.9 is the more reliabe engine.
-
I had issues with my car blowing turbos on my bkd engine and after months of hassle it was the engine breather was blocked and sending oil through the turbo. That's only trouble I have had with mine
-
We have a 1.9 tdi golf plus dsg with 135k and it's been faultless. Did hear some stories about the 2.0 versions.
-
I'm looking into getting myself a 1.9 diesel golf Aswel, I'd defo be remapping it as I drove one a few weeks back and found it sluggish enough. The match model is the one you want , you'll get all the bells and whistles.
Jay I remember your 1.9 tdi, how did it respond to the first remap? I assume there ok to remap up to 120 or 130bhp without any worry about standard clutch /turbo?

What stories are those?

Just drove a 140 bhp pretty certain it's remapped. Felt like it would keep up with the gti? How to remapped 140 or 170 fair against the gti?
-
I had a remapped 140 for four years, it was pokey with lots of usable power for everyday driving. Not a million miles off what you are used to in the GTI.
-
Just had a look at vauxhalls cdti Sri 150bhp. Apparently remap to 200bhp but why are they so cheap. Seen loads for around £1k-£1.5k for 2006 models.
Apart from vag what other decent options are out there for diesels?
-
My uncle has a vectra and has been a good car but god its boring to drive
-
Lol. Why?

Sorry mate i haven't checked this thread for ages!!!
My car was remapped to 149bhp and 263ft lb at Rtech.
Clutch was fine but the DMF started wobblys after about 3k. To be expected it was over 100k on stock clutch when I mapped it.
I replaced with a Valeo SMF kit for £330 and that was absolutely fine. :happy2: :happy2:
Vectras are no where near the same league as a Mk5/Mk6 , altho not bad cars on their own.

I have a 2011 140 Caddy 2.0 6 speed for my work van, it's had a re map & it pulls like a train, bags & bags of torque, enough to spin the wheels through the gears, (must get some Goodyear F1s ASAP)
It's comfortable too but I still really enjoy the GTI when I get home, the two are chalk & cheese really.
But the economy!!! Wow, thats a BIGGG difference IMO.

How would a Passat 140 compare to a golf 140 if both remap? Will Passat be too heavy to benefit?
-
I've got a Skoda fabia Vrs Special Edition. The VRS is definitely one to consider. 1.9 tdi and fairly compact so does shift

This the newer one or the squarer one?
Mate had an early fabia vrs, swapped the va for a vb, egr delete and all that, mapped up by Ben at Shark, and pulled rather well for a derv. Tidy little cars.

It's a mk1 mate, it's not been modded and still pulls fairly well. :happy2:

Yep, I like them. His was all black, ap coils, the works. Really nice car. Went well with the standard turbo and a map but really came alive in the higher gears with the 150 turbo. I think he regretted selling it actually. As it happens he ended up in a bkd mk5 that screwed its turbo!

Any thoughts before this gets lost.
-
Why would the passat be too heavy to benefit?
The passat would be slightly slower because it's heavier but the gains would be roughly the same.
-
Well my 140 is a caddy, so a golf floor plan really, but..
Full of tools/ fittings so far slower than when emptied, but still rapid. :driver:
-
I have test drove 3 x golf 140s, 1 x a3 140 and 1 x Passat 140. The 2 golfs and a3 felt really nice and quick to drive. All 2004s regs. The 2007 golf and 2006 Passat felt sluggish compared to the previous 3 cars. The golfs and a3 I was assured they weren't remap or modified. All had turbos replaced recently.
I really like/want the Passat. I know it's bigger but there was very little response from the accelerator.
Confused.
Got another golf 140 to look at tomorrow.

Just traded for plus cash my way for this

Want to sort the rear badge for an oem chrome one but don't know the size???
It has a gti grille and the front number plate on the lower grille. Wanna sort that out too. And fit this grille with a gtd badge or something.

It'll still be a diesel Vauxhall though :jumpmove: it'll also have a DPF at that age and there's some known problems with DMF, ERG and swirl valves. Although ever car has it's gremlins
