Title: Yellow Sidelights in Xenon Headlights?
Post by: Nasir on January 31, 2016, 04:26:25 pm
As standard, the headlights come with a yellow sidelight bulb just underneath the dipped beam. I think it contrasts nicely with the white hue of the xenon beam and accentuates it somewhat. But I also think a white sidelight would make it look more modern perhaps?

Is this a yay or nay for you? Does the yellow look a little old? Or is the white LED a little played out?

What do you have on your xenon headlights?

I have some Philips 'Ultra White' halogen bulbs because LED lights nearly always go wrong. I think I'll have to get some LED's though. Too yellow..

Both mine are amber as it'll not mix well having both white and amber under the main lights IMHO

I'd say turn the amber parkers off so they only indicate when needed and try some led side light white bulbs and see how they look.

Look in the forsale section as whooosh is selling bulbs and you can see what they look like in white xenon.

I've just got the standard W5W's in, yellow as they come. I did have some leds in, but as is often the case with capless led bulbs, they often worked themselves loose enough to go out and cause a bulb out warning  :fighting:

This was mine running LED sidelights. While I liked the look of it, I was fed up with them keep failing. Seems to be common with LED's so I changed them for amber W5W's instead. I now have the full orange strip with dimmed indicators. No photo of those at the mo.

Standard sidelight vs. LED:

With xenons on (bulbs swapped for 600K Morimoto bulbs)

Sidelights and xenons sourced from EM Tuning (forum sponsor on RS246 and Audisport). No errors or problems of any kind. I use bulbs from EM tuning on my other car too.

How do you find them with regards to indicating? Have considered doing the full Amber for a while but concerned about confusion when indicating as the obviously only the Amber of the indicator flashes..

Stick with amber side lights as you don't want to be messing around with bulbs all the time.

The centre ones are not amber. it's the lense in front of the bulb that gives the amber indicator effect. the side lights are clear but you can fit amber bulbs in to complete the amber lower EU look  :happy2:

When you indicate it stops running at the brightness you have set, and flashes on and off as normal. Then when you stop indicating it quickly goes back to reduced brightness.

Tlnds is correct. I only have mine set at 2% so not very bright at all. Never had anyone get confused with them. The only time I found that was when I was when I had cornering fogs enabled. Specifically at islands. As you turned left to enter the island the left fog would come on and people would think it was an indicator and would go to pull out. Since tuning them off I have had no issues.

I know how the running lights work, my question was more about the sidelights running the same amber colour as the indicators, so when indicating only the inner (indicator) part of the amber part of the light would flash leaving the outer (sidelight) still a solid amber colour.

I don't think it adds much confusion I think its still pretty obvious that you are indicating (as far as I can tell as I'm sat in the car). I haven't had any issues so far although I've only had this setup for a few weeks.

You wanted to know if they caused confusion. I confirmed they didn't and gave an example of when I have experienced confusion from other road users.

That is correct amber will blink a brighter and then reduce in brightness when it stops blinking. Outer side lights will remain solid amber or white or which ever colour you fit in.

You just need someone to code them in on vcds vagcom by ticking a check box and also turning bi xenons without shutters so not to blow your wiper motor.  :happy2:
