Title: Strange ticking noise on '06 Gti. Only on idle
Post by: raz469 on February 03, 2016, 05:06:25 pm
Hi guys, i hope you can give me some good news, but yesterday after work the car started making a ticking noise, but only on idle. Its not made this noise before, and i kinda hope it because of the car didnt run for 9 hours. It made the noise all the way home (~20miles) but when i parked up it stopped. I think its the circled item below as i could see it rattle, but thought someone here would know.
Has anyone heard of this ticking? Or know what the below item is?
Thanks in advance

Now that would be your auxiliary fan belt tensioner.

Get a 15mm long spanner on it and pull towards you to see if it is free as it contains a spring load for the belt.
Whilst stationery, rev the car gently with bonnet open or get someone to do that for you and have a listen for the noise as that shouldn't make a ticking noise.
That engine bay looks different to mine as the battery is located behind the headlight and mine is located at the rear where your header tank is

No mate, just the tensioner itself and the belt would need to be refitted of course  :happy2:

You got some sort of racing battery fitted?

As above though, most likely AUX pulley, tensioner or ALT.

I replaced my alternator a few weeks ago for a second hand one from ebay £20 with pulley, spins fine and bearings good too, at that price mad to buy new; easy DIY. :happy2:

I have changed a few alternator pulleys over the years, easy to change with a tool like http://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/262127529746

I have found GSF car parts stock the original INA pulleys for a better price.

I guess it is a Google image pic mixed with some Paint skills

This will help to prove if it's the alternator drive pulley -https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fyosuYbPxr4

Probably as golf tfsi engine bays and slam panel do not look like that  :signLOL:

Thanks everyone for the advise. Gonna try sort it out this weekend with a mate weather permitting. @r5gtt that was from the net. But the tensioner was in the right place so didn't even notice the fuse box.
@scottymon. Funny you say that. I dont think so, the previous owner did change the battery and coil packs which I couldn't 100% understand why. The batt is a varta, nt sure of the rating

Check your alternator?.
Are you losing any coolant?.
Possible timing belt tensioner rollers or water pump?.

Have you checked your fuel pump cam follower as it maybe showing signs of failure which will result in fuel pump failure or even worse cam lobe failure!!!

Good to check it all or try get someone to have a look.

If this rattle appears once up to running temperature don't rule out the cam chain tensioner.

Guys, it took some time, mostly because my mech is flat out these days, but gt this sorted recently. Changed the belt and tensioner. Alt was fine. Rattle gone now. :D
Did a forte flush and filled with millers. She sounds great again except the standard chain sound. Fk knows when i can get around to this, but 46k so not worried yet.

I need a new lower engine mount as The oem rubber has split. Can i get the stock gti one from tps, or does anyone know of uprated better versions? Is there any other reason the mount could have gone on a 46k other then a good/hard life (must stay positive)

So it was the tensioner after all that  :signLOL:

superpro dog bone insert, power flex or a vibra technics mount

Thanks r5,
I took your advice on the engine/tranny mounts and ordered a pair aswell. The order is fked up as the tossers didnt even have them in stock and still let me order them. Long story short she turned 10 this weekend and all i could do was try n wash her between snowshowers. But she does look good :D

Glad you got one part sorted out at the least.

Tell me about it, someone  :stupid: people out there just wanting your money and then having you wait and wait and wait ff* what a holes.  :slap:

Did you order the vibra technics ones?.  :jumping:  and so jealous :-(

Jealous of what? Your cars still better then mine. And 034s won't make it worse will they?

I went for them in the bay and oem/ powerflex underneath. Im so broke its a joke but hopefully once i get my overhead light switch there nothing urgent and i can sit and squirm for a couple months knowing shes stock.

I ordered them well in advance and only when i phoned them did they tell me its another 3 weeks. I wouldn't have minded if they told me before i paid for them. Sometimes people just ruin it for eachother.

Anyway on my way out for some burfday drinks. cheers pal

Because I want a set of those top mounts too  :sad1:
I shouldn't think they'd make it worse.
No I wouldn't say my car's better but thankfully all working apart from maybe the intake runner may need attention as I got a Mil light on last night so will see what happens when I next drive her.
I know the feeling when you've just spent mega change on car parts only to find out your not getting then because the seller is out of stock  ow silly are they and you should have demanded a fund refund and gone else where tbh. I ordered off a perfermance company some years back and waited a full 10 days before I found out they didn't even know about the online order so demanded my money back even thought it took an extra 3-5 working days to clear after messing me about  :stupid: bas*****.

Anyways have fun and don't drink too much red bull  :signLOL:
