Title: Why are some Mk5's fitted with roof aerials and some not .
Post by: Patrick1964 on February 07, 2016, 12:11:14 pm: I'm looking to buy a Mk5 in the near future but it is essential that I can upgrade the radio to DAB. I'd like to fit a proper DAB roof aerial, but don't want to start drilling holes. I was planning to buy a car with the standard roof mounted aerial and swap it for a DAB one, but quite a lot of cars don't have this option. Is this a particular spec / model year thing ?

Post by: Andy on February 07, 2016, 12:45:57 pm: The early mk5 had the aerial build in the rear glass but Wether gt was vw cost cutting or the reception wasn't for the radio wasn't good they put roof aerials on after 2005

Obviously this doesn't help you I just wanted to put my pennies worth in :)

You must have at least a BT kit or a radio with navigation. Mine came with a RNS-510 version A and BT premium kit. It has the roof shark fin with an aerial replaced by a shorter version.

Post by: Nasir on February 08, 2016, 09:54:50 pm: 2008 MY had the above aerials if sat nav or BT was specified. Before 2008 MY it was a smaller shark fin without an aerial.

Post by: AJP on February 08, 2016, 10:04:13 pm: I reckon mine has BT. Removed the dodgy sunroof switch a while ago and remember seeing a mic in there.

Could have had nav at some point - it's just the basic rcd300 in there now but you can see a couple of nicks where someone's removed the facia.

My car is pretty high spec; highline, folding and dipping mirrors etc. I'm sure there's plenty I'm unaware of.
