Hi,
6 months ago my drivers side front window stopped going up and down. When I press the button all I hear is a click coming from the door but nothing happens. I took the car for a service at AKS and alex had a look and said it's worth trying a new motor.
I managed to get one from this forum but unfortunately when I fitted it, it didn't work. I still get the click. However I noticed there was a slightly different part number to the one already in my door. The part number on old one out of my GTI Golf mk5 2005 is 1K0 959 701 K and the part number from the other car (ED30 2007) is 1K0 959 701 M. The M is the only difference and the motor part of the unit on the new one is shorter. Would this different part number make a difference and could this be why the new motor also didn't work?
Any other suggestions would be helpful because I really wanna get this sorted.
Cheers :)

I had this earlier on this week. It was on a mk5 tdi 5dr
Passanger window didn't work. Just made a Click noise when either switch operated.
Turned out the main live wire which goes to the motor had broken between the A pillar and the door inside the rubber.
-
Ah right!
I may take a look at that tomorrow then. Is that the main bit of wiring in between the car and the bit that goes into the door? Inside the flexible rubber?
-
Yeah. Wiring in the flexible rubber between the door and the car body. Very common for wiring breaking
-
Right! Well I shall definitely take a look tomorrow!
Cheers for that :)

Well this morning I took a look at the wiring loom harness in the drivers door to find out if I had any broken wires... Could this be the problem!??? Lol I actually can't believe how bad this actually is!! How the hell could the wires get in this state!??
I have been having other problems with the alarm going off and I think this is part of the problem as this is also contributing to the car thinking the door is being opened so the alarm goes off.
I'm obviously in need of a new wiring loom harness so have posted in the wanted forum.

OMGOSH that terrible :surprised:

I know I was so shocked! I can't think how it could get like that!

even though that looks pretty f#cked up mate its quite repairable, clean it up so all the wire discolouration doesn't look that bad, then if you can solder up the broken cables and re insulate them, should last a good few years after a good repair
-
I am actually thinking of doing the soldering now you mention it SI.
There are all different types of wire though. Some thicker than others. How do I know which wires I need if I buy some new ones? I mean I don't know what each wire is called?
-
from your photos there is still enough end on the bits that have broke to solder back together, take all the tape off first, clean it all up and evaluate the job first, i defo think its doable :happy2:

I had the same problem with my brothers mk5. I did exactly that.
Bought a roll of wire from maplins, cleaned up broken wires, soldered and heat shrinked new wires to repair broken connections.
Fiddly, but doable, just take your time when matching the wires up.

Some of the wires have different thicknesses. Do I have to get wires that match the exact thickness?

I used 24 gauge 0.2mm wire from maplins, with 3.5mm heat shrink to cover the soldered joints.
This is thicker than most of the wires, but good enough for the thicker wires.
Wire: http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/maplin-equipment-wire-24-02mm-black-10m-kr31j (http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/maplin-equipment-wire-24-02mm-black-10m-kr31j)
That link is for 10m, you wont need that much, they sell smaller quantities in store.
The next thickness up from that is 32-0.2 if you want to be extra safe. It's all to do with the amps / current that the wire can withstand.
Heat shrink: http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/35mm-heat-shrinkable-sleeving-1m-bf88v (http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/35mm-heat-shrinkable-sleeving-1m-bf88v)
If you want it to be 100% matching you'll need to buy individual repair wires from VW, but I don't think its needed.
Once repaired, I wrapped the bunch of wires in insulating tape before covered back over with the rubber sheath.
My brothers was done nearly 2 years ago and it's still fine.
I'm up in Lancashire, if you're near, I could help you, I have the wire.

Cheers for that info mate! Unfortunately I'm in Leicester not close to you but I'm gonna give it a go. I've done a bit of soldering in the past so once I get the cables it should be a piece of cake... I will regret saying that haha
-
In march I will be down Midlands way, so if you're still stuck, let me know.
Good luck!

Water must be getting in there to have done something like that. :sad1:
When repairing, heat the cables up with the iron and then touch the solder to it so it melts into the wiring. Sounds easier than done but doable as mentioned. I've done it on a vw alhambra and make sure you stick the heat shrink in between before you join the wires together.
Good luck :happy2:

I did notice earlier actually that the rubber flexible bit that lips onto the frame of the car was a bit lose so I might have to look into sealing this somehow when I have soldered the cables.
-
The door banjo's are cheap to buy and the newer style or a great improvement but you need a pin tool to allow the changing of them.

That's probably it Craigh, not had a look at the fitting of the rubber but if you can get a small or thin cable tie around for a cheap fix then just do that if you're not got to replace the thing as I have seen the door removed and it's a pain of a job to align back up. Thought I'd just be an unplug and stretch the rubber over but don't think it is.
