My GTI has developed a speed related (not revs related) droning noise. sounds a bit like somethings rubbing or cross ply tires on a landy! had a look around in the dark with a torch and cant see anything out of place. warranty expires VERY soon!
Any ideas folks?

Had new tyres recently?
New alloys?
Any work done on the car?

Same happened on mine at almost 3 years old. Turned out to be a rear wheel bearing. Took a while to diagnose as they blamed the tyres at first. Fair play they put some ed30 wheels on and it still did it.
-
I had a rear wheel bearing replaced at around 50k, they tried to blame the tyres aswell!
-
I had offside rear bearing go at 40k on my previous MkV. Symptoms sound exactly as yours. Cost me 240 quid to have fixed at VW. Was about 3 weeks out of warranty.
-
mine is at 100,000 standard had new tyres are around 6 weeks old. Would a wheel bearing be covered under warranty?if it is it needs to go in ASAP.
-
Yes, wheel bearing is covered under warranty
-
just dug out the paperwork warranty expires 16th jan 2010! I will be ringing VW pretty sharpish in the morning!
-
if you have done 100k tho you will be out of warrenty 60k i think is the limit.
-
not if its a 1 year approved used warranty!had the whole steering rack replaced not long ago!
RIGHT IMPORTANT QUESTION
managed to get it booked in but not untill friday the 15th, considering I do two hours of commuting a day is the car safe to drive until then????
-
Deffo sounds like a wheel bearing. The wifes Jetta has had two done under warranty in the last two months.
As for if it's ''safe'' or not. If the noise gets louder then I'd suggest you park it up. We drove with the wifes one for a good few weeks before the second one was done and it didn't get any worse. :happy2:

If its not too noisy then it should be ok - however if it does let go the wheel will fall off. My brother-in-laws old fiesta did exactly that!!
