Hi Guys
I'm selling the satnav removed from my car, so need the radio code before it goes. Does anybody know a friendly dealer that will give the code over the phone?
I've called my local dealer (VW Epsom Drift Bridge), and they say they will give it to me free of charge but want me to come in with the nav, ID and my V5 doc to get the code. I can't get there during the day though, and would rather not give up a saturday morning!
VW Letchworth (where the car was originally sold) also want me to come in, but will charge me £25 for the pleasure of providing a code. Cheeky gits.
VW Morden struggled to understand why I would want to remove the satnav, and why a satnav would need a radio code. Once they got their head around that, they also wanted me to come in.
Thanks

Is it not printed in your user manual with the options codes?
-
Is it on there? I just saw a mass of numbers and options code, with none of them labelled as being the radio code!
-
Pretty sure mine's printed on a card which is slotted in at bottom of handbook

I have a radio code card of my RNS-510s because I bought them used from ebay. My factory fitted radios didn't come with the code so I had to ask the local dealer for them, so I could sell the radios.

Well that was a bit annoying but I got the radio code out of Morden VW.
Convo went a bit like this:
Me: Hi
Stealer Numpty: How can I help?
Me: I spoke to one of your colleagues during the week, and they said I can pop in this morning with my sat nav, V5 and ID and get the radio code
Stealer Numpty: Er, do you have an appointment?
Me: I asked that, was told I didn't need one
Stealer Numpty: we're short staffed at the moment but I'll see if we can get to you in an hour
Me: Ok, it's a bit difficult to keep my 3yr old entertained...can I leave it with you and come back?
Stealer Numpty: I'll have to leave the keys with sales...
Me: oh no, the nav is in this box...
Stealer Numpty: it's not in the car? Then we can't do it
Me: of course you can. I asked that specific question to your colleague too
Stealer Numpty: it's policy. We need to check the chassis number
Me: you mean the one in the logbook here? You have everything you need
Stealer Numpty: it's policy, we can't do it
Me: you're making this a lot more complicated than it needs to be
Stealer Numpty: look, it's our policy, I can't do it
Me: of course you can, you're just refusing to. Look, I have 2 VAG cars at the moment, have had another 5 in the past, and I'm a VW shareholder. I expect better service than this
Stealer Numpty: only a manager can authorise this, I'll have to call a manager
Me: please do
Returns 2 min later. "I need your v5 and id "
Another 2-3 min later I get a printout with the code! What a jobsworth!

On the plus side, you got the code for free :happy2:
Every dealer I rang wanted £20 or an hours labour.
"We have to connect your car with radio to our diagnostic machine. Then it gets sent to Germany"
Utter BS. The codes are on file or can be gathered from radio info.

True, one of the stealers wanted £25. Another would give it for free but wanted an appointment booked in.
None would give the code over the phone, or accept scanned V5 and ID by email.
Reminds me when Epsom Vw wanted around £300 from me to re-sync my transponder key with my mk4 golf Gti...I got the same bs about sending codes to Germany. Found out online how to resync for free; from memory, put the key in the ignition, turn ignition on, the press lock or unlock. They wanted £300 to do that???
Sums up stealer numpties...

tbh i can sort of understand not giving a code over the phone... the codes are to prevent thefts by making it useless. i know in this day and age where theres a will theres a pretty easy way. but giving codes out without checks over the phone sort of does bypass the reason the codes are there
