Title: Cam Chain Replacement
Post by: raptor_tom22 on February 25, 2016, 09:08:06 pm
Hi all
I'm going to be replacing the cam chain on my GTI in the next few weeks, apart from the obvious tensioner, cam follower are there any other parts people recommend to replace/upgrade while it's partly stripped?

Thanks for your help ☺

You are talking about a MK5 GTI right? (serious question) - the MK5 has a cambelt....
Change the water pump whilst you are at it.

The correct tools cause the locking bolt is fu*king tight and a good power bar.
Also a long reach T30 cause one cover bolt is tricky if you've not got a long reach bit.

It's should be a lifetime item, but if/when you get that dreaded startup rattle then it's time to look into getting it changed.

Thanks for the reply all, already got the water pump cam belt kit and can chain kit on order. Will be changing the cam follower as well even though it was only changed 20000 miles ago. Unfortunately need to change the steering rack at the same time

I have that startup rattle also and that 'rattle' is slightly audible at tick over.  How much for that to be replaced at Mr VW?

Best part of £1000 no doubt

As above, realistically you're looking at £1000 + with regards to most cam chain replacements.

1000 quid for cam chain? doubt it. Should be easily sub £500

The rattle associated with cam chains is normally only audible once the engine is warm, with the oil being more viscous hence the noise being more audible. I am not advising against getting it changed if you are concerned however!
