Well I had my cambelt changed a few days ago, it was brown and crumbling!! Very lucky that it hadn't snapped (only owned for just over a week) now onto cam follower and dv. Also need some advice on tires if anyone can help? :happy2:
-
What was the interval on the belt?

Well that belt lasted at least 71k! Last changed at 40k and now 111k but garage reckoned they'd lied about the 40k change so who knows, all I know is I'm very lucky :notworthy: @white91 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=13025)

Yeah sounds like it was the first change if it was brown and crumbling! Good job you got it done when you did!

How much did the cambelt change cost you?
-
I just had mine changed and was also lucky as it looked like the original belt and done 110k.
I paid £260 with belt, water pump and tensioner all included.
-
I know!! It's a relief to know it's done and okay now! No worrying about it.
It cost me £330 with everything and a stamp in book haha @Adam0604 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=12798)
Why the f**k don't people have them changed regularly? It makes no sense to me :star: @Leeroy87 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=14829)

Yeah its crazy mate. Mine had the old type water pump which has plastic fins, the new one from tps was the non plastic one lol. The belt was starting to crack in places  lucky.
-
Sound, got my service due in less than a fortnight so want m e done as it's the original one still and it's done 70k now.
-
When actually is the specific cambelt change on the gti? 4 years? 5 years? 60000 miles? Heard so many different times.... :scared:
-
Think it's recommended every 40k or 5 years, whichever comes soonest.
I'd check it every major service you have done though
-
Well they've put a sticker on mine saying it doesn't need changing for 100k now, apparently that's the new standard? Probably get it done every 40/50k from now just for peace of mind @ahendley3 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=15422) @Adam0604 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=12798)
-
That what VW told you?
-
No the garage that did it haha! Who knows, everyone says different don't they :stupid:
-
I'd ring VW and ask what they recommend personally.

Everyone knows what VW recommends, there are about 100 threads on this board about it in the last few months alone. If his garage says it's good for 100k miles then why not accept that?

I'm really :scared: as I'm on 71k and counting but no sign of the belt ever being done :sad1: need some extra pocket money for this job and if the belt snaps then bye bye tfsi :signLOL:
-
Better off getting it done asap, peace of mind and also think of it as £300 now or bye bye gti!! @r5gtt (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11199)

@ConorGTI (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=14951) bought the belt kit and water pump last week and awaiting delivery from a member. soon as it comes I'll get on it one weekend. You're right as I don't fancy saying bye bye gti.
-
Good! Hope all goes well mate
-
Thanks a lot. wanted to do it this weekend but no sign of the parts and next weekend I'm working again :sad1:
Got so much to fit on and no time to do it.
-
Not sure if you phoned VW but officially it's recommend every 40,000 miles or every 4 years (5 after September 2009, doesn't affect the GTI as it went to chain), whichever is sooner.

@Ditto (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=13301) mine is a 55 reg late November although it's good practice to replace every 40-50k and I'm on it now. thanks

Mines has been done twice (2005/05) First at VW 34,000miles, then again at 62,000miles by an independent, however from receipts the water pump was replaced due to leaking, and theres a leak from up there again so VW say.

@glasgowdubber (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=640) I'd check it out or go to your indy and see what they say.

I wish I could, it was done by the previous owner, and the garage is in Bradford, I'm in Glasgow lol
