Title: Guess the price
Post by: AliGTI on March 02, 2016, 05:06:27 pm
Hiya ladies and gents. Car is in for a new front wheel bearing and siezed caliper. To soften the blow can someone hazard a guess at the price? It not at the dealers, it's just in a local garage.

Had my back bearings done and it was around £95 for each bearing as VW only sell it as part of a hub complete unit.  Then I would estimate 1-2 hours labour on top at whatever their rate is.  Not sure on the caliper as they freed mine up as part of the major service I was getting done and I was already spending quite a bit of cash.

Depends what's going to happen regards the seized caliper?.
Bearing around £45 labour depending who's doing the job.

Depends on where they get there parts from and if they add a percentage on to the cost of them.

I would estimate no more than £45 an hour for labour.

Couple of garages near me will nock the vat off of paying cash  :happy2:

Option one: Replacement of bearing and caliper with genuine VAG about £250-300 Inc Vat

Option two: Replacements of bearing and caliper with aftermarket parts about £200-250 Inc Vat

Option three: Able to wind pistons back in on seized  caliper and replace with genuine VAG bearing about £150-200 Inc Vat

Option four: Able to wind pistons back in on seized caliper and replace with aftermarket bearing about £125-150 Inc Vat

That's my best guess. Good luck

I had to do mines last week, for some reason there were 2 different sizes listed against my reg, anyways, one was retailing about £120, one about £100, typically mines was the more expensive, however after discount was about £70 plus VAT.

I'm sure the non-genuine ones were about that price also.

My mate did it in the street in about 30-45mins.

Well that was an unexpected outcome. Two of the calipers were rubbing. The garage freed them off and alls well with them. As for the bearing. They said they can hear the noise but after testing in the workshop they can't be certain which bearing it is. The fronts have inner and outer races, they can't tell which it is yet. Outcome is drive on it a bit more and come back and see us. No money exchanged hands  :)
